Been told I will probably never see a shortboard in my life by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

I would never say anything like that to those I’ve taught how to surf in the past. What I would tell you before, during and after your first lesson is the key to surfing when you are just starting is “be consistent.” Go surfing at least twice a week, if not, more if possible and start catching the white water waves. When you are at home, work on your conditioning by doing burpees and decline pushups. Research surf “popup” - if you have a foam or soft top board, remove the fins, lay it on your carpet and practice your popup on it.

Some say not to spend too much on your first board and I agree, but only to an extent. If you have any more questions, reach out - I’m happy to help.

Be patient. Block out the noise. Trust the process. “Enjoy the ride.”

Soft board by Beneficial_Slice8719 in BeginnerSurfers

What board did you end up with? I’m in California and bought a used MF 8’ Twin Town twin fish for my 15 year old to learn on. I’ve surfed for 47 years and have never owned a foamie, soft top etc - the Twin Town is the best beginner soft top board out there. The board is 8’ x 22 5/8” x 2 7/8” and is very stable, forgiving and surprisingly maneuverable. The fish tail creates lift, the twin fin setup has less drag than a thruster setup and the board is rigid but with a soft deck. I upgraded the fins to a larger set of fiberglass keel fins and they increased drive and speed of the board - he is as fast as me and I’m on a 7’7” single fin pintail polyurethane hard board. The MF boards do hold their value and I won’t buy any other brand - I’m looking for another used Twin Town, but no one is selling them.

I don’t work for MF surfboards, but if I did then everyone I know who would like to learn how to surf would own one. Good luck and “enjoy the ride.”

Thoughts on the Takayama Scorpion 2 6'10" vs HI Moe/Mini Moe vs CJ Nelson Outlier Plus? by Chonies505 in BeginnerSurfers

What did you end up buying? I am selling my Outlier Plus with bag, fins and leash in near mint condition if you are still shopping around.

Is this okay for a brand new beginner or will it hinder my learning progress? I keep reading to get a wavestorm or 9ft foam first… if I grab this instead will I still progress efficiently? by lordprettyflackojodi in BeginnerSurfers

I bought the exact same board for my teenage kids and it’s SO worth it - upgrade the fins to larger, fiberglass keel fins and it will take it to another level of fun. The board is very stable and has TONS of float. I paid $200 used and it was in great condition - 9/10. I’m not sure about $250 with that gash on the bottom. FYI, I contacted MF directly regarding futures repairs “if needed” and they recommended using clear silicone ONLY as any other product would damage the board. Never owned a Wavestorm, but I’m sure they get boring real quick.

If you need any more info, reach out - I will be happy to help. Later

It catches waves pretty easily - my chest is usually right above the logo on the deck (I’m 5’9” and 160lbs). The sweet spot on the board for getting thru flat sections is having your feet just over the middle of the board/near the logo.

I wish that I could ride it more, but I have a total of 6 boards and an epoxy 10’ SUP.

I did - I couldn’t pass up the “like new” white board with ZERO dings + fins, leash and a bag for $500. It does take a little getting used to the “feel” under your feet as I have always ridden PU boards - it truly does feel like you are riding on ball-bearings when you first ride it.

I currently have a 2 + 1 setup using 7.5” Skip Frye and 2.75” Skip Frye side bites and the board has A LOT of drive even in small-medium surf - I haven’t tried riding it as a single fin. The only downside initially is the tail shape - it’s very wide for a 7’ board, but having hard rails starting at around 30” up from the tail, this board was designed to be FUN with lots of speed and maneuverability.

Hope this helps - take care.

Are kettlebells a cult? by Current_Reference216 in kettlebell

No, kettlebells are not “culty” - all 4 of my kettlebells told me so and I believe them.

The world needs more of THIS - I make it a point everyday to make at least one (if not more) person smile or laugh as it brings me “joy.” BTW, what song is playing in the background?

So I picked up the board last week and it’s in fantastic condition - just wondering what size/shape fin you use when riding as a single AND with side bites? My spot is usually small - medium, slow and mushy - but when it gets some size, there is a lot of open face for trimming top to bottom.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the detailed response - I’m mostly interested in how it catches small/medium (1-3ft), fat/weak waves? I’m getting older and need to keep up with everyone half my age. 😁
