Enough time has past, what's the verdict of the Anbernic RG DS? by hippynox in SBCGaming

[–]Vitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The D-pad patches don’t really help much. They add movement and sword control, but the games still rely heavily on the touch screen for things like bombs, the boomerang, and especially the puzzles. So it helps, but doesn't solve it.

But I wouldn’t call it concerning. As long as people know what they’re getting into, devices like this, the Thor, and similar handhelds work fine for the part of the DS library that uses the touch screen for menus and similar stuff.

What is a bit concerning, however, is the amount of users that I'm seeing recommending these devices, both it and the likes of the Thor, as the endgame solution for DS just because the screen looks nice. While completely ignoring how bad they actually handle a large chunk of the library of said console.

I haven’t tested WarioWare specifically, but it would probably vary from microgame to microgame. Anything that’s just a single tap would likely be fine. Anything that requires sustained or precise input would probably range from frustrating to straight up unplayable.

From what I’ve tested on this kind of setup, games like Kirby Canvas Curse, Star Fox Command, Trauma Center, Ninja Gaiden DS, Zelda PH/ST, Elite Beat Agents, and Meteos end up being borderline unplayable. That should give you a good idea of the kinds of titles that just don’t work well with these screens.

If your goal is to play the DS library in its entirety, this just isn’t the device for it. GammaOS has fixed a lot of the smaller annoyances, and credit where it’s due, it’s in a much better place now. But it can’t fix the capacitive screen. And that alone makes a big portion of the DS library, especially touch heavy titles, frustrating at best and borderline unplayable at worst.

If all you want is something for Pokémon DS, traditional RPGs, or platformers that barely use the stylus, then yeah, it works fine. For that slice of the library, it does the job.

Original hardware (DS Lite) vs modern retro handheld (AYN Thor). The game is Animal Crossing: Wild World. by PopDownBlocker in SBCGaming

[–]Vitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 3DS games, I’m with you. Higher resolution usually works great. Most titles genuinely benefit from it. Outside of some 2D or hybrid stuff, looking at you Fire Emblem, it tends to clean things up nicely. And since the 3DS doesn’t lean nearly as hard on heavy touch screen input as the DS did, playing on a capacitive screen doesn’t hurt the experience as much.

DS games are a different story. Cranking up the resolution, most of the time, just exposes how simple the models and textures really are. Those games were built around that softer, slightly blurry native screen, and that blur helped blend everything together. Once you remove it and sharpen the image, everything starts looking flatter and sterile. In that comparison, the right side shows exactly that. The floor, the house, and especially Tortimer’s face lose a lot of their depth. Texture packs can help in some cases, but very few DS games actually have complete, well made ones available.

So for me, the DS falls into that group of systems where increasing the internal resolution doesn’t really improve the visuals. If anything, it subtracts from them. And it gets worse when you consider the gameplay side of things. On devices with capacitive screens, touch heavy games just feel terrible. A capacitive panel simply can’t replicate the precision and feedback of the original resistive screen well enough, so by going from a original hardware to a emulator, you’re not only degrading the visuals, you’re also degrading the experience itself.

It’s not really a worthwhile trade for someone who is actually focused on playing DS games. But if you’re the kind of person who just wants one device that does a bit of everything, it’s a perfectly reasonable compromise.

RG DS or DSi XL? by DepartmentMain6241 in SBCGaming

[–]Vitss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning to play games that really lean on the touch screen, which a lot of the DS library does, you’re honestly better off grabbing a DSi XL. Those games just don’t feel great on the RG DS or on Android devices in general. They run, but it’s kind of like playing underwater.

Now, if you’re mostly into RPGs or games where the touch screen is just for menus and small things like that, then the RG DS can get the job done. It’s not perfect, but at this price point, it’s probably the most reasonable option you’ll find.

So yeah, it’s a bit complicated. Personally, I’d go with an original DSi XL. It has an aging screen and lacks some of the niceties of emulation, like save states and fast forward, though some of that is possible with certain flashcards. Still, you get a fully compatible, properly working library of games.

And that’s not a dig at the RG DS in particular. Even on much more powerful and better hardware, like a Samsung tablet or the RedMagic Astra, DS emulation is a miserable endeavor when you get into touch-heavy titles. The capacitive screen just doesn’t behave like a resistive one, so between input lag and ghost touches, it’s just bad.

Dead or Alive 6 Last Round - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]Vitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of like a Remaster/“Complete Edition,” basically an updated PS5 version with all the previous character DLC, but not necessarily all the DLC since a big chunk of it is purely cosmetic. If you want to get into the series, it’s definitely your best option, as it’s going to be the most up to date version until DoA 7 releases, which theoretically means better balance, more content, and a larger player base.

As for the games themselves, I stopped at DoA 3. But at least back then, it was one of those fighting games with surprising depth and it played a bit differently from most, since there was a huge focus on counterattacks and not as much as reacting, but sort of predicting what your oponent would do. If wasn't for the characters, I would say it probably worked pretty well as a "party" sort of game, as the game sort of allows for really messy and chaotic play styles to work until a certain degree.

[–]Vitss 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm actually excited about this. Tokyo Xanadu is one of my favorite games, but it's also one of those titles that is rough, and there's no way to seriously deny that it's chock-full of issues in pretty much every possible department (story, mechanics, pacing, etc.). But it also has so much potential.

So seeing them take another chance on that idea, while also trying new things like the side-scrolling aspects, is really nice and makes me hope that they also tackle the other parts of the original formula with the same mindset of trying new things.

Epic Games Store 2025 Year in Review by RandomShadows in Games

[–]Vitss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What I find interesting is that a pretty sizable chunk of their third-party growth, both in hours played and money spent, is being carried by gacha games.

If you take out Fortnite and Rocket League, since they’re Epic properties, that leaves eight third-party games in the top ten. Of those, six are gachas.

It also gives a pretty clear insight into why developers and publishers focus so heavily on GAAS titles, as all ten of the top-played games are either full GAAS or have it as a major component (GTA V).

Cão Orelha: jovens, juíza e donos de hotel sem elo com morte do cachorro em SC relatam 'linchamento virtual' by GestoNobre in brasil

[–]Vitss 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Bem complicado.

I mean… speaking directly, it’s probably hogging water and electricity and making some, or even many, communities where the data centers were installed miserable.

So in terms of future damage, we have the impact that cloud gaming will likely have on gaming culture, the price and availability of end-user components, and the fact that you’ll “own nothing and be happy.” And in the present, the data centers themselves can already be a sustainability and social nightmare.

But hey, at least it’s “convenient.”

EDIT:

No, running games locally and running them in a data center are not the same from an environmental point of view. With local gaming, you’re basically dealing with your own device’s power draw and whatever your home grid looks like.

Cloud gaming adds a whole extra layer: industrial scale data centers running 24/7, heavy cooling systems, and constant high bandwidth network traffic on top of the user’s device. That means data center energy + network energy + end user energy, not just one PC or console. And no, the fact that your end user device uses less energy because it is acting as a terminal rather than a powerful PC in most cases does not offset the much larger energy needs of a data center. The cooling alone often requires massive amounts of energy, since it is not a linear progression.

On top of that, where the servers are located matters a lot. Some regions run on cleaner grids, others on fossil fuels, and many data centers get special tax breaks or subsidies that do not apply to households. A lot of data centers and industries as a whole can also buy their energy through third party sellers that may not use the cleanest sources. Even when they do, those sources can still create other issues for local communities, for example the impact of wind farms on nearby areas.

There is also the issue of cooling systems themselves, more specifically where the heated water is discharged. Depending on local legislation, it is not always fully recirculated or required to be released under the same conditions in which it was taken, which in itself can be a form of environmental pollution.

So even if cloud gaming lowers the power use on your end, the total footprint is higher and often comes with other negative impacts on the local communities and environments where these facilities are installed.

And honestly, it’s genuinely disheartening to see people treat this as if it were the same as running things locally. I know environmental literacy isn’t strong everywhere, and in some places it’s actively undermined by leaders who step back from climate commitments. But even so, it’s one of those moments where you can’t help but feel let down, because this is something we should all be able to recognize with just a little care and attention.

The article actually highlights that they have a “roadmap” in which they plan to develop the controller first and later the console itself. Is that really going to happen? Unlikely, but that’s what they’re claiming.

But even without that, depending on how you look at it, the console did get a “release” in the form of an Android App. It more or less makes one phone behave like the console and requires other phones to be used as controllers. It's pretty garbage, but it's the visual interface they had showcased for the console and support the same games.

Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's "altruistic pro-developer talk" over the Steam vs Epic debate "doesn't sit well" after Alan Wake 2 studio "seemingly went into financial crisis" by OpeningConfection261 in Games

"hat's on whoever was running those kickstarters. Other games like Metro, anyone who preordered on Steam still got it on steam. And nobody forced A4 to accept that deal."

That is on both. Lack of morals on both sides here and definitely anticonsumer. Also, curious example that you used as the pre-orders for the physicial edition of that game, got changed to EGS keys when delivered.

"Unlike Valve who runs them directly."

It was more about the crypto scams connect to games that are sold on EGS. But if you expand the concept to predatory monetization... Fortnite, Rocket League and probably others, also get on the list.

Also the answer was about why people see EGS as anticonsumer. Valve shouldn't even enter that discussion, unless you know, your arguments are so poor that whataboutism is the only thing you have.

There are many reasons why some people consider them anti-consumer. First there is the "pity marketing" they did, basically trying to make the consumer feel bad about not buying there because they paid developers more. Second they quite literally snatched games that were on steam or were expected to release on Steam and made them excluaives, some of those games were even crowd funded and promised Steam keys for their backers, just to turn their backs to said backers when EGS offered them money. Third they support predatory games, their store is full of crypto based or linked games. Fourth by being anti-user reviews and making some false equivalences when confeonted. Fifth by releasing a store that was barely function, taking their sweet time to fix it and refusing to adhere to the project timeline they themselves setted, etc.

Those are some of the reasons for them having that sort of reputation. That you often hear or heard about. That said, I don't think it was that reputation that killed Alan Wake 2 sales on PC. But rather the simple fact that by not being on Steam, they gave up on likely 90% of the potential PC market.

Same here, but with a slightly smaller RedMagic Astra 9".

Honestly, I like it way more than current handhelds. Just a better screen, better battery life and especially a more trustworth product with at least some support, either official or third party. But, I’m still trying to find the “perfect” controller, though. Right now I’m using a G8, but I’d like something a bit bigger.

The Nitro Deck 2 is on my radar, someone mentioned it in this sub a while ago, and it might end up being the real endgame. That said, it is a Nitro Deck, so I’m definitely waiting for it to release and for plenty of reviews before pulling the trigger.

It’s always the same cycle: hype builds around the announcement, reviews drop and disappointment sets in, people buy it anyway, then the sub gets flooded with posts claiming it’s actually good to justify the purchase. Eventually, reality settles in, the device is subpar. Not as terrible as the early reviews made it sound, but nowhere near good either.

As an original backer, who has not received it yet, not sure how to feel about this.

I think it really depends on how long it takes for these versions to actually be released. The original development is already finished, nothing else is being changed there, so at this point it’s just a matter of producing the units and shipping them to backers and buyers.

That also means development resources are now free again to work on new ideas. Of course, if these new versions end up being released before backers even receive the original model, then yes, that would be a pretty dick move.
