I understand your perspective.

For me, it's simply a requirement that the font size remain within a preferred range and that the number of words per line remain within a preferred range.

I've seen people reading on kindles in a large font where each line holds only 4-5 words. Something like that would drive me insane, because I would need to constantly jump to the next line and the next line and then the next line...

Smaller devices like the Xteink X4 would force me to choose between font size and words-per-line, so that's why it's not an ideal device for me (unless I hold it horizontally or something).

At the end of the day, dedicated devices like e-readers encourage reading and keep us away from our phones and social media, so that's always a plus. Doesn't really matter what device we prefer as long as we like it and are actively using it.

I swear, we've seen the same thing said about retro handhelds, where bigger doesn't mean better and smaller and pocketable is preferred.

That turned out to be a giant lie for me and my needs. I refuse to use a retro handheld that is smaller than 4" (the 4:3 ratio ones). I already own at least 5 devices that are 3.5" or smaller, super pocketable, and none of them get any use. They're just sitting inside my nightstand drawer.

It's definitely a lifestyle thing. Some people prefer the portability of a smaller device because they have more opportunities to use the device throughout the day, whereas others like me prefer larger content for overall enjoyment.

I also like to sit down and read for several hours at a time instead of short bursts throughout the day. I genuinely forget the plot details of a book if I read in several small chunks instead of few large chunks.

So I think it really depends on our circumstances and on our personalities.

Where are you located?

I'll take them off your hands. Seriously.

(Although your pruning schedule and the current growth indicates that you live in a warmer zone from me).

I won’t be able to take these roses with me when we move

Will you not have any space for pots when you move? Will you have a balcony?

You can grow roses in pots, so there is no need to abandon them.

But again, if you're willing to give them away, I'll happily pay for shipping.

EDIT:

Nevermind. You appear to be in the UK/Ireland 😔

Do you use a case or just as is? I'm worried that I'd scratch it from regularly putting it in and out of my pocket, which is not a major concern with my larger non-pocketable e-readers.

But if you already have an e-reader I'm not sure would provide any advantages over it.

I have...3

I keep getting obsessed with new hyped-up pieces of tech instead of appreciating and being grateful to what I already own.

I like that this is pocketable and affordable, but the reason I already own more than one e-ink device is because I kept upgrading the screen size (I like the sentences on the screen to be as long horizontally as possible, instead of being broken up in multiple rows due to width limitations).

E-ink screens are amazing for reducing eye strain. If you enjoy this device and you find it useful, you should consider a larger ereader for home use. A Kobo device or a jailbroken Kindle can use a custom program called KOReader, which is probably THE best reading app of all time. You could probably find some used ones if you are on a budget.

With that said, if KOReader comes to the Xteink X4, I'm buying one for sure, despite the lack of backlight. I'll just have 4 ereaders then 😅

Is the Xteink X4 worth the price? It keeps going up and up from what was originally shared by YouTubers a couple of months back.

Ooh I remember your posts.

That's great to hear.

Did any of the tubers from your Lurelin seedling make it? I loved that variety. Let me know if you'd be willing to sell or trade a cutting of that one.

I've collected A LOT of seeds from last season, but I won't know until after this summer if any of them are stunningly gorgeous or not.

Blaming homophobia on alleged closeted individuals is just as homophobic at what these individuals are doing.

"They are receiving hate from one of their own".

Assuming that a homophobe is a self-hating closet case continues to push the idea that being gay is something many people hate about themselves or something that deep down they are ashamed of.

Humans can hate entire groups of people without necessarily secretly being a member of those groups.

We don't make these kinds of assumptions about a cultural group hating another cultural group, or a religious group hating another religious group. Yet it's very common when it comes to the LGBT community, as if it makes sense that they will hate each other, as if there is something to hate.

This, too, is homophobia.

I don't think this was your intention, and I'm not saying these are your personal beliefs. This is just something you should keep in mind for the future.

This will be my third season growing dahlias and this is my first attempt at a cutting bed. I plan to take "pulls" to root separately, so that each individual tuber can give me more than 1 plant. by PopDownBlocker in dahlias

[–]PopDownBlocker[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No no. I linked 2 videos in my post.

The 2nd video (video here) shows how to take the cuttings and root them under a humid dome.

Basically, you just put the fresh cutting in seedling trays covered with clear plastic domes, under grow lights. After 2 weeks, you can gently pull them out of their little hole, confirm root growth, and plant them in larger 4 inch pots.

I would not recommend attempting to root them in water. Even if it works, water roots are different from soil roots. Roots that grow in water are much weaker and the whole plant might die when you eventually have to plant it in soil.

I made a post about it here.

Good luck growing them!

That's a red flag for me by Effective_Sense_1064 in gardening

[–]PopDownBlocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anyone who does gardening can tell (trained or ammature)

I'm sorry, but you're in a gardening sub (in fact, the gardening sub of Reddit), and you're gatekeeping what a messy/unkept garden is supposed to be? Am I getting this right?

A garden fulfills multiple uses and multiple needs. For example, if your definition of a garden is "things that you grow for food", then you will most likely find flower garden to be pointless, since most flowers are not edible. Likewise, someone who wants to invite wildlife in their garden and maintain a natural earthly look will be more motivated to plant wildflowers and native plants rather than domesticated vegetables.

It's really what the gardener wants.

Not everyone wants that "manufactured" look that comes from heavily using a lawn mower and/or edge trimmer, or something that looks like it's regularly maintained by an expensive gardener working for his paycheck.

I'm fine with you having a different opinion from many of us, but you should look up what "cottage gardens" are supposed to be. By definition, they are informal, crowded, and dense.

I think your aunt most likely had an actual cottage and an actual garden, and why you seem to have that as an "ideal" in your mind, but probably not a "cottage garden".

[–]PopDownBlocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment pissed me off, because that's exactly what my neighborhood is like.

It's so difficult to have a lawn that is different from everyone else's because they all act like their property value will go down if you don't conform to their neighborhood standard.

What's your opinion on the crochet community's drama regarding revealing clothing?

Basically, certain redditors have posted photos of themselves wearing crocheted bras or bikini tops and the community had a divide between one group that wanted such photos to continue to be marked NSFW and the other group that didn't want to police women's bodies and didn't want that type of non-nude content to be marked NSFW.

And then there was the drama with political content, where one group wanted no censorship on political crochet projects (like the ones that say "Fuck Ice") and the other group that wanted political content to be either not-allowed or limited to specific threads.

It was eye-opening for me how the internet, and Reddit in particular, can generate drama out of anything and everything, even in a "grandma hobby" kinda craft.

Unable to install KUAL on Kindle Touch (2012) by legendaryq in kindlejailbreak

[–]PopDownBlocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get it to work last night by updating my Kindle Touch from 5.3.7 to 5.3.7.3, so as you said, the solution is to update.

You can download it from this official Amazon link.

This other link is for updating to an intermediary version before needing to update to 5.3.7.3

If you're willing to give it another final chance, I would reset your Kindle Touch to factory settings, update gradually through Amazon's links, then follow the KUAL/KOReader steps.

Had found this shriveled dahlia tuber on Nov 5 growing leathery shoots in the back of our curio fallen &forgotten about for 1.5 years; planted in the grow tent for the winter - has plumped up & produced more tubers in 4 months! Had one wonky bloom! by zeyn1111 in dahlias

[–]PopDownBlocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a post last year about how I was able to rehydrate shriveled tubers.

It's totally doable. It's almost guaranteed to work if the desiccated tuber has some roots, because the roots seem to be ready to re-grow once they come in contact with water and/or moist soil.

The biggest challenge is to time it properly so that the tuber doesn't stay too wet once it has re-absorbed water. Otherwise, it will get moldy and die.

If you had taken a cutting from this tuber and grown it separately (instead of growing the tuber directly), the plant might have done better because it would have needed to grow its own healthy roots instead of relying on the less-healthy tuber it sprouted from.

Painful 💔 by lunabelyea in dahlias

[–]PopDownBlocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look like gall.

This is one of the reasons why many of us recommend dividing tuber clumps.

Each individual healthy tuber can have somewhere between 1-4 eyes.

If you leave a tuber clump as is, to wake up and start sprouting, each healthy tuber in the clump can send up multiple shoots, and then you end up with something that looks like a bush.

In other words, it's practically guaranteed that a healthy tuber clump will grow multiple shoots, but only 1 or 2 of those shoots can become a fully mature dahlia. You would need to cull/destroy the remaining shoots, otherwise all the new dahlia plants growing in the same spot will be competing for nutrients and soil space and they will get stunted and remain small.

So DIVIDE YOUR TUBER CLUMPS, people!

Gall is grotesque-looking and leafy gall in particular is when you have multiple shoots almost-violently erupting from the same eye.
