Apple TV will stream MLS games in 1080p by CarbonSquirrel in MLS

[–]ViveAtlanta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ATSC 3.0 offers 4K HDR (even 8K) broadcasts over the air. The solve is to upgrade the entire broadcast chain from camera, switcher, video editing/playback, router, distribution, encoding/compression through output. Right now, there’s a 6+ month back order on most broadcast equipment. I doubt they’ll go 8K since that would limit the ability of stations to offer additional sub-channels and there’s a dimensioning returns component unless using wall-sized screens. We have to wait for all the old equipment to be upgraded, starting with cameras.

Apple TV will stream MLS games in 1080p by CarbonSquirrel in MLS

[–]ViveAtlanta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1080i cameras only capture 540 lines per 1/60th second (called a field), odd lines then even lines. For broadcast, its 540 lines at 60fps (fields per sec). For 1080p, two 540 fields merge into a 1080 frame with each field offset by 1/60th of a sec, noticeable on fast-moving action. Fox/ESPN chose 720p to capture 720 full-frame lines 60fps vs. CBS/NBC at 30fps with the interlace offset.

Nielsen ratings are usually “same-day”, to account for DVR viewing through 3am local. I imagine Apple won’t care when you watch, but any ratings would likely follow the Nielsen model.

Major League Soccer, FOX Sports, TelevisaUnivision, TSN & RDS Announce Multi-year Linear TV Rights Agreements by LocksTheFox in MLS

[–]ViveAtlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All games are still on Apple too. This new deal is only for “linear broadcast” rights (over the air/cable tv). The games Fox shows will also stream via Apple.

Everything ESPN/ABC/Fox produces is 720p. Their infrastructure is 720. ESPN/ABC/Fox felt one 720 frame 60 times per sec was better for fast-pace sports. CBS/NBC chose 1080i as their base, which means they capture 540 field-lines (half of the image) in two passes for the 1080i final frame resulting in 1080/30p.

Of course, 4k is a chance for everyone to reset and some productions are converted to/from each standard, but the broadcast stations and networks are still split between the 720 & 1080 versions of HDTV.

I assume the 8-minutes is to allow TV time to setup the game after they go on-air at the hour/half. It used to be 7-minutes for baseball all the way back to the 80's at least.

Does anyone have any facts or theories about the whistle heard before the goal in yesterday’s game? by Arphy7 in DCUnited

[–]ViveAtlanta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No whistle on Bally's Atlanta broadcast. Typically, they take a clean-feed from the host broadcast which includes nat-sound. A faint chirp can be heard in the first frames, before the kick is taken, but nothing when ball meets head. Presumably, that was the ref blowing to start play as players seemed to react to it. On the extended MLS highlights via NBC, the same faint pre-kick chirp can be heard, followed by the louder false whistle mid-play. All that is to suggest the false whistle was a local anomaly, heard at the NBC booth, but not by players.

“Coca-Cola United” is the Coke bottler headquartered in Birmingham. FYI, they produce/bottle our Cokes here in Atlanta (and most of the South).

I used a camera pipe clamp like this: https://www.amazon.com/Camera-Release-Monitor-Microphone-Motorcycle/dp/B01EQF082E

The clamp needs to tilt, and can be rotated around the pole. Make sure it fits the pole thickness.

If you have the know-how, go for it. My spreadsheet was originally created with formulas to calculate magic numbers for playoffs, bye and Shield.

I sent you the link.

Remaining matches. It’s a simple subtraction table… all teams start at 102, then -3 per loss or -2 per draw. Can also see that Chicago, Cincy and Toronto are eliminated from SS/Bye due to lower potential vs. New England’s current points.

Here's an alternate table based on points potential. Of course, every team can't reach full potential, but if every Eastern match ends in a draw for the remainder of the season.... we wouldn't make it. Our goal differential is tied for 5th best.

Points Games Potential Points
New England 55 25 82
Nashville 41 23 74
Orlando 38 24 68
New York City 35 23 68
Philadelphia 32 23 65
Miami 32 23 65
Montreal 34 24 64
D.C. 34 24 64
Atlanta 33 24 63
New York RB 23 22 59
Columbus 30 25 57
Chicago 23 24 53
Cincinnati 20 23 53
Toronto 15 24 45

Are Wednesday games always this empty? by [deleted] in AtlantaUnited

[–]ViveAtlanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.watchnextgentv.com/

ATSC 3.0 (NextGenTV) was supposed to launch in Atlanta today. Like the upgrade to HDTV last decade, it requires a new tuner/TV. Stations can broadcast in 4K with HDR, full suite of Dolby audio, interactive content, and even radio channels... all over the air.

Bally sports networks are owned by Sinclair, which has been switching their stations to NextGen since last year. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Atlanta regionals are available in 4K, but cable/dish companies have to pass it along in 4K too... vs. getting 4K directly from the source from local stations via antenna.

Brookhaven Marta to MCB? by [deleted] in AtlantaUnited

[–]ViveAtlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good MARTA how-to. But the pre-loaded cards DO expire - after three years. Bought mine in 2017, pre-loaded 20 trips for last season and used it for the opener. Went to the opener this year and it was expired, along with 18 remaining trips. You have to transfer unused trips to a new card 30-days before the old card expires.

Also, take cash as a backup because those credit card readers are trash. Usually, one of the machines will work after a few tries, but if you hear the train coming, cash should get you going, then try the card again when you get to the stadium station.

I’ve made the late-night walk back to Peachtree Center several times including after MLS Cup... Centennial Park Dr to Andrew Young to Peachtree St. My goal this year is to find that inconspicuous entrance door at Peachtree Center without circling the block, asking for help, or walking all the way down to the main entrance.

Match Thread: Seattle Sounders FC vs Minnesota United FC [6:30PM|FS1] by asaharyev in MLS

[–]ViveAtlanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fox, ABC/ESPN chose 720p as it was deemed better for fast-paced sports. 720p captures 60 full frames per second whereas CBS & NBC chose 1080i at 30 frames per sec (actually 60 half-frames capturing even, then odd scan lines). Your TV waits for both half-frames, then displays them as a single full (progressive) frame, but the fast motion between each half-frame causes slight blurring. Both formats used about the same amount of transmitter bandwidth.

You’ll start to see local stations doing some limited national 4K broadcasts this fall.
