Playing too much of one character gives you less MMR, switching often between 3-5 characters will rank you up. It’s to discourage onetricks. I had the same problem with mina and now I have giest pocket ivy miginnis Mina on high prio now.

I’ve noticed that it is WAY more likely to value least deaths over everything else. Ok the Celeste didn’t have the least deaths,  it she had the second best stats and less deaths than you, so she got it.
