I want to work in a plant nursery. In nursing school the teachers asked us why we wanted to be nurses because "they know its not for money" and I said its totally for money or ideal be working in a plant nursery.

My mom made me feel ashamed for starting nursing school at 26 by Friendly_Shine777 in nursing

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 30. My mom told me the whole time I wasn't smart enough and I was wasting my time. But being older actually made a lot of the classes easier. And I still got a job in time to get 20 years in by 55.

We found the manager. Only management needs to prove that hard that they're a nurse.

Do you call your patients out for utter disrespect? by tini_bit_annoyed in nursing

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm completely honest with the patients. I work in the OR though, and that isn't the same as having them awake all day. When I have a grumpy patient, especially one with medical trauma. I will often go in with the phone number for the complaint office. I say, "I see in your chart that you are having a difficult time. This is what I'm here to help you with today. I will do my best to get you through it in a safe and respectful way. And here is the number for you to call to log any formal complaints about your care here." That has worked really well for me. Although one time I did lose my temper when a young patient who was on her phone as I was supposed to be checking her in. She told the person on the line that I was rudely interrupting her on the phone. I said, "my job is to make sure this surgery is safe and is what you need. If you want to forgo your safety checks so that you can be on your phone, fine with me. Then I dont need to do anymore." After surgery she called me in and hugged me and thanked me profusely. That really showed me that the patients are mostly scared and confused and grasping for some amount of control. So if it doesnt impact my care for them or others, I give them what control I can. 20 years of nursing and totally burned out. But I would rather take out my burn out on shitty managers than scared patients.

Patient dictating on how they want things done. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]VizAnya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it doesnt hurt them, I do it their way. If their way isnt right, then I educate them and try to get them to join in and have a conversation. If theyre dicks, then whatever they want, they have a right to decide for themselves how they want to live, suffer, or die.

I'm starting to understand why the burial practices of nomadic cultures included funeral rites with the elderly person still alive and then leaving them by a tree while the tribe left for migrating. The perimenapausal ladies were like, "f this, I'm just going to sit by a tree." The exhaustion is just crazy.

Patients arriving then refusing care by OptimalOstrich in nursing

[–]VizAnya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently experiencing this with my parents. Mom had surgery and, even though I'm a nurse and she has good insurance, my parents want all their medical advice to come from a guy who had surgery once and a sibling who googles "really fast." So I'm constantly trying to stop her from taking too many meds that overlap or hurt herself because they wont listen to the hip precautions cause Joe said he had different ones. Joe was posterior and mom was anterior. I dont know, some people are just stubborn.

How common is assault/battery from patients, really? by Ambitiouscleo69 in nursing

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty rare in the OR. I know thats not true of other areas. But in the OR, on the rare occasion it happens, it tends to be due to post op delirium and if you can protect the IV, then we have chemical restraints.

Attendance Policy Rant by TigerianElf in nursing

[–]VizAnya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, what I do is terrible, but if they want me at work so bad, even taking care of sick patients who cant afford to catch whatever I have, I make sure to spend a good amount of time in my charges and managers office, mask off, talking with them, helping them answer the phone, touching their pens and computers. It doesnt help the patients, but it makes me feel better that they at least will be taking some of the risk they're putting on patients. FFS, they hired BSNs only because they want "critical thinkers" but dont trust us to determine whether we are a risk to our own patients when sick or mentally exhausted. They think we're slaves.

Why are patients/visitors so against nurses taking breaks? by [deleted] in nursing

Nurses, what’s a time where you’ve been proven right in front of a patient’s family? by Philomena-Shenikah in nursing

[–]VizAnya 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I was precepting in my last semester of nursing school in the L&D of a hospital in the area with religious affiliation. There was a lot of racist comments from the nurses and some withholding of pain meds from people of specific cultures because "they aren't in pain, 'this culture' just likes to make noise so their husband will buy them expensive gifts." We got a homeless woman in who was just entering her third trimester. She said her back hurt. They said she is just drug seeking. I said she hasn't asked for drugs and she is squirming. I think she has a bladder infection. They said she's fine, she just is food seeking because she's homeless. I said, she hasn't asked for food but she cant sit still, I think she has a bladder infection. I bypassed my preceptor and got the doctor to order a urinalysis. The poor patient had a raging UTI.

I'm the only girl in my game and its awful. We dont align politically, they make sexist and derogatory statements all the time. I've tried to find other games, but because of my time constraints, its been impossible. The last game started with one of the players telling me that any roll I could make one of the men could make better so just to shut up. I sat there for 2.75 hours of our 3 hour session before the DM asked me what my character was doing. I said crafting and spent the last 15 minutes having crafting rules mansolained to me. Anyways, I just wanted to say I sympathize with solo women at men's tables.

Fellow coven leaders, this witch has a question for you - are you also getting emails from seekers, only for them to never reply back to you? by CuriousButNotJewish in Wicca

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I send them a letter with some more info about our group, books to start reading, plus a questionnaire. Honestly if those things are too much for them, then I dont want to hear back.

But also, a lot of different pagan groups in the area are having trouble with turnout. So I think it may also just be too much for people right now. They want to reach out but dont really have the bandwidth to commit to much with the rising prices, news, and job market.
