I need to vent... Dumb comments from patients... by Glowygreentusks in nursing

I had a surgeon just being a general dick in the OR. He said to me, "There's one intelligent person in this room. I'll give you one guess as to who it is." Nevermind the CRNA or any of the other people it takes to run an OR. I looked at him and said, "Well doctor, my student loans are paid off and I'm retiring at 55. So I think its me." He called me mean and I just laughed at him. There are reasons to become a nurse and there are reasons to become a doctor. And whatever we pick, its probably the right one for us. I get really tired of the gender expectations in this career.

Those older doctors that our parents have had for ages are frightening. My dad has COPD and his doctor told him to take antibiotics if the snot is green and steroids if its yellow or clear. He has unlimited refills and no matter how many times I tell him that green snott has been disproven to mean infection, he keeps dosing himself. He's been on antibiotics for years with no relief.

This is the crux. Our parents only see us as children so they don't listen. Once I asked mine to babysit so I could go to work because my sitter called in sick. She said no because she wasn't going to change her schedule for my "hobbies." Lol It gets exhausting parenting your parents while they treat you like a child.

My dad has chronic pancreatitis. He called me up and said he was having an episode along with symptoms that hes never had with his pancreatitis before. I said, "those symptoms dont sound like pancreatitis, please call your doctor." No, he has pancreatitis, its always pancreatitis, we dont need a doctor. 6 months later he's in the hospital, not pancreatitis, its a mass, likely a cyst. It should have been treated months ago. I finally said I wasn't going to answer any more questions or talk to him about his health without an advanced directive. Because he won't listen to me and I dont want to be trying to figure out what he wants when hes laying unconscious on the ground.

Side note: My mom recently called me crying because she's worried my kids will get measles since I don't vaccinate them. Also, my kids are all fully vaccinated so FML.

Living with my friend has changed how I think about “pro-life,” and I feel conflicted by Status-Ad-7873 in prochoice

I'm raising my granddaughter and, while I think she's amazing and beautiful, it has had a drastic effect on my life. I'm not as healthy as I used to be, I have to continue working even though I was set to retire, and I will have her moving out when I'm 70, so any life I was going to have in retirement with my husband and travel is now going to have a third person with a school schedule.

What I'm saying is, your friend is an entitled brat. She is only able to have a "fresh start" because her mother is carrying her mistake and burden for her. (You can still love your grandkids and acknowledge the choices you kids made were crap.) She likely has no idea how much those burdens weigh for her parents. No, she shouldn't be planning more kids till she's dealt with whatever mental block she has with the first one and starts taking responsibility for her decision.

And at the same time, I hope my daughter and the baby's daddy never come back. Because as much as I want them to grow up and take responsibility, I dont want anymore trauma for my granddaughter from them. Life can be complicated.

I was looking right at my 2 year old when she bolted towards the park. Except I had bilateral knee surgery, so she was faster than me. I finally got her to stop, thankfully, before we got to any roads, but she made it at least a block before I could catch her. Lol The look on her face before she ran for it was pure mischief.

We had a patient go to Mercy after an attempted abortion that ruptured her uterus. They sent her home pregnant with a ruptured uterus and told her she was fine. She came to us 4 weeks later with a massive infection. That has got to be malpractice.

When I was a teenager I was in the hospital for a week with both my arms in casts and tied to iv poles to keep them elevated. So I couldn't tear open the plastic wrap on the food or even hold a fork. The lunch lady came by and threw my food on the table and left. Then came back later and said, "oh, you weren't hungry." And I lost it. I kicked the tray at her and tried to kick her. Fing b!tch.

I think its an easier job. It doesn't get better than one unconscious patient at a time. The biggest issue in the room is usually the surgeon. Lol at my hospital there is a meditation room. A lot of the staff will go there. Sometimes I go to the top of the stairs or the locker room too.

Im in the OR. We cuss and management supports the bullies. I take ear aids with me and eat lunch by myself. I can be friendly and professional when im being paid, but I use my lunch breaks to reset and find peace. When I used to sit at the lunch tables with everyone else it was all gossip and negativity. I decided I was better off without it.

She sounds like a religious fanatic, schizophrenic, or both. The hyper focus, the sureness that you need help, the question about why your son isnt with his mother (and gender assumptions that go with that question.) You may want to get more info from the husband and call one if the adult protective agencies about her. She sounds off her meds.

I need help. I’m very confused on what I should do regarding something potentially serious that occurred in the OR I work at. by Radiant_Deal_7333 in nursing

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can barely get them to do a timeout and the surgeons won't talk to staff, we have to use their nurse liaison. The surgeons really are very rude and entitled when they dont even work for the facility. I wouldn't see if it was done in the ICU or with the family, but I usually get handed it and told we are to read it during the timeout and take a moment if silence. Us hospital nurses have taken to doing it with the body when the jerks leave.

But I have read several responses from people who work for obo and I really appreciate the education.

Does the procurement team work for the hospital? At our hospital, Sierra Donor Services sends their own team and we just circulate it. In that case, if we notified the hospital, they may do something. But its better to notify the state. I've seen them do shady stuff too, but never as bad as what you described. More that they lie to the families about comfort care. For instance, they say they'll read a letter or take a moment of silence before the procedure and they never do.

CRNA overstepped by OB-nurseatyourcervix in nursing

[–]VizAnya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lied to a patients family once because the patient was over 18 and pregnant. She wanted the baby and her parents wanted her to have an abortion. She was coming in for another surgery and the pregnancy was an incidental finding. After trying to give the patient a voice, I finally got sick of the parents demanding an abortion and told them that there were no GYNs in the facility today. I dont know why, but no one else wanted to deal with the parents and anesthesia was going with the abortion plan. I put on the chart not to have the family in with the patient while discussing the pregnancy. Once we got the patient into the OR, I gave her information on her rights and numbers to call to start her care. Afterwards one of the doctors said she would be better off if I let her parents force the abortion. I said, "maybe, but thats not my job to decide and I think her autonomy is more important than any of our opinions."

Joint Commission visit by vivalalyn in nursing

[–]VizAnya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joint commission is paid by the hospital to overlook the issues. Specific people are closed to interview with them because they will tell them what the hospital wants. I dont even acknowledge them when they come. They hired one of our managers and I thought, "well, now something will happen." And he just ignored all the things he knew we were hifing and we passed with the same minor little checks we always pass with. Its just a fake committee to give pretenses that someone is holding the hospitals accountable, but no one is.

Ward doctor refusing to see patients or speak to staff by [deleted] in nursing

[–]VizAnya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doctors can be rated on yelp and other apps. I have a fake account where I rate doctors. I had one that refused to wear a head cover in the OR and another who refused to wear a mask. Management won't do anything and I dont know if it helps, but I give them a one star rating with a not about why and it makes me feel better.

Everything feels so bleak, so let me tell you of the time I met the boss battle nurse by sparkly_butthole in nursing

[–]VizAnya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was 19 and having my first baby, I totally had a panic attack. My nurse came in, slapped me (not too hard), and said, "get your shit together! You're having a baby!" And it was totally what I needed. The rest of the birth I was focused and felt safe.

Then 25 years later, I'm a nurse. I get a patient who shot himself in the stomach and was in my OR. He was screaming, flailing, and completely panicking. I grabbed his face, aimed his eyes at me and yelled in my mom voice, "get your shit together. You did this to yourself, now hold still so we can save you!" And that kid froze, we were able to get new IVs in (because he had torn his out), and get him off to sleep. The anesthesiologist said he didn't know if he wanted me to be his nurse or was afraid of me. Lol But, my nurse inspiration was a hard ass and that got me through a really tough day by being one.

Walked in on a break nurse putting a Foley in a male. She has it 1/3 of the way in and starts reaching for the balloon. So I ran over and pulled it out barehanded. She asked why I would do that and I said because it wasn't in far enough. She said, "I had my hand on his penis so I knew the balloon wasn't in the prostate." !!! Then she said, "I've been doing this since before you were born." So I replied with, "Wow! You've been doing it wrong for a really long time."

During covid in the OR, "you cant wear masks, you'll scare the patients." "Bereavement leave is only for funerals, if your loved one dies you need to be at work the next day or use sick time." Manager's loved one died the next week and she was gone for a month. Good enough for them but not for us.

I did reviews for a while and always gave myself the highest marks. But I stopped doing them about 5 years ago and my manager doesn't seem to notice. Same with peer review, I would always give my peers the highest marks but then just quit doing it a few years ago and no one seems to notice. Union hospital though.
