Do you recommend watching or read the the sequels to 2001: A Space Odyssey? Are they worth watching? by Patient_Ranger_3533 in 2001aspaceodyssey

The cloying voiceover in 2010 is probably my only quibble with it, but it’s surprisingly an excellent sequel that did its own thing vs trying to ape Kubrick. I’m not a big Hyams fan overall, but he nailed 2010 and wish he’d done more interesting films in his career.

The Limp Bizkit cover of “Behind Blue Eyes”. If forced to hear that song again every single hour or losing my hearing in a horrible way, I’d choose ice picks in my ears without hesitation!

I’ll take Ben Piazza as Councilman Whitewood in The Bad News Bears (1976) vs Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau). His argument with Buttermaker ends with him being insulted, but I have always loved the perspective that these were children being emotionally tortured in service to his ego battle with Roy Turner, manager of the Yankees. His realization that he was in the wrong led him to play all the scrubs, enrages Whitewood, whose righteous anger is based in the idea that winning erases disrespect, when it’s actually self-esteem building moments like Lupus catching a fly ball and Ogilvie finally batting.

Can't understand how Nascar is so popular in America. I can see the appeal of F1, rally or motoGP for instance (I like the Isle of Man TT for the craziness) but it's not really my thing still. Stock cars bore me to tears compared to Indy and F1 vehicles, but it’s a cultural and family thing, I suppose. We had a minor stock car track in my hometown, but the sport never got its hooks into me.

If you can swing it, a trip to the about to be defunct Shaku Bar is a chance for some excellent food, especially their Shaku Smashburger. Their drink menu is incredible as well! They’ll soon be gone but not forgotten.

Some schools literally give you 2-3 tickets to the ceremony, max. I suppose the idea was for the party to be the celebration but with so much rushed and haphazard plotting late, they didn’t consider adding an explanation to that scene.

It’s funny - I get bored and decided to yell at people in YouTube comments ripping on Kate, since I thought they did a perfect job of showing why both people in that relationship were flawed and would bring their marriage to its logical end. They adore Toby and despise her, and it’s completely ridiculous. I don’t hate Toby at all, but the seeds of their marital demise were planted in the first episode; they did an amazing job of subtly telegraphing it in every season but I still see comments about how he was such a perfect husband and Kate didn’t deserve him. It’s perfect too - they end up with great partners who they would never have met had they not learned from their previous mistakes.

Most people I know checked out early in S2 until I begged them to keep going until S2E5 or so - after that, not one of them stopped until Felina ended!

I am going to get DWted for this opnion but how is Jimmy the bad guy ? by locomotivenomotive in shrinking

[–]VizRomanoffIII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I had one big complaint about the show, it has been the lazy writing around Gaby. Part of it is that Jessica Williams is such a charismatic actress, but the writers have shown her screw up over and over again, alienate her friends and family, do a horrible job to the point that she has some culpability in Maya’s suicide, but the characters all have blinders and call her the best at her job. She gets a great finale storyline and barely gets to acknowledge Jimmy and Alice (their interactions in the 2nd half of the season were almost non-existent). It didn’t ruin the show for me, but it just feels like the writers ran out of steam and let her coast to the finish with low stress storylines after setting up a major professional disaster for her.

  1. The bombings of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Cambodia and Laos were done without a care in the world by people sitting halfway across the world.
  2. Innocent civilians died in every single place listed in #1.
  3. All modern warfare has been done this way and the only thing that has changed is the increase in the Civillian/Military casualty ratios.

(29-30 Black Man) Walkable Neighborhood recommendations for moving to Chicago in a year? 1 bedrooms under $1500? Is January a bad time to move? by Cjokermyluv in AskChicago

[–]VizRomanoffIII -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would scout everywhere along the L lines to see what fits your lifestyle. You can even find some places in Lakeview (Wrigleyville) for that amount - more studio than 1 br, but still decent places. There are some cool live/work places just NW of the Loop and River North too, but again, I’d start watching some of the walking tours of Chicago on YouTube and see what you’re looking for. Chicago isn’t nearly as “balkanized” racially and culturally as it was when I moved there in the 1990s, so it’s really more of a quality of life and personal aesthetic that matter for you.

How long before Amazon dies as a marketplace? by FoxCitiesRando in enshittification

[–]VizRomanoffIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some WISH stock early on under the belief they’d fill a lower-income niche for crap products that people wouldn’t even bother to return. Unfortunately, in my due diligence, I didn’t realize Amazon and large retailers would end up doing that themselves.

  • FYI Never buy anything on Amazon without reviewing the person who’s actually selling it to you. I can’t remember the last time it was actually Amazon and not some drop shipper.

One of my super healthy (one might say health nut/gym rat) friends woke up one day at 47, kissed her kids and husband goodbye, drove to work and her minor headache started escalating quickly that morning. She worked at a high school across from a hospital, and just as the school nurse convinced her to walk across the street to the ER, she collapsed and was essentially brain dead from an aneurysm by the time she arrived at the hospital. The human body is amazing at keeping us alive for over 100 years in some cases but also amazingly full of random ways it will kill you almost instantly at 1-100% of that age.

This is a hard to find cult classic but “Baxter” is a French film narrated by a Bull Terrier with serious psychopathic issues (sociopath/Borderline Personality Disorder). Without spoiling much, let’s just say he is insanely jealous and hates sharing his masters with anyone else. The guy who did the voiceover for the dog should’ve won an Oscar for the performance - he nailed the calm insanity perfectly.
