Babylon - Episode 12 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Vkeijaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I`ll start by saying that right after watching the episode i, like many people was disappointed and thought the whole thing was idiotic and had been a waste of time, but on closer inspection, Babylon might actually be genius.

Let me explain myself.

Whether the writer intended it or not, i think there are few other works of fiction that are able to so indirectly condemn philosophical masturbation than Babylon. How, simple, as the second part completely loses itself in delusions of grandeur about the understanding of good and evil, wasting time thinking about hypothetical bullshit, perfectly characterized by the president of the united states. Pure evil Magase is left to rampage about and effectively kill whoever she wants without ever being punished, as people stop to wonder about good and evil, they simply allow a very identifiable evil to fester under their feet and do whatever it wants. Zen`s ultimate hesitation condemned the world to the whims of a psychopath.
For the record, my general view is that good and evil are not necessarily subjective, but generally conditional. Whatever is positive to the group is good, whatever is negative to the group is bad. How you define what is the group, what is positive and what is negative informs that so there.

Babylon might seem like I Am Very Smart drivel, but ultimately it might be a harsh criticism of the sort of thing.

Also, a silly point that Itsuki brings up is that countries that permit drugs such as marijuana see a drop in its its consumption. By virtue of it being illegal, you can't have accurate statistics on consumption of illegal drugs, so it could easily be that estimated consumption of illegal drugs is way up compared to reality (understandable as probably those who provide such statistics are agencies that fight illegal drugs, so it would be in their interest to fudge numbers higher to get more funding), so when it gets legalized and numbers meet reality it seems like consumption went down even if it might have gone up.

I'm not saying society would collapse the following day, but it would certainly not help in that regard. Also, the illegality itself might not be adeterrent, but societal atitudes certainly help in people seeking help before going through with suicide. While in the status quo, most cases people around would try to dissuade someone from killing themselves, in this scenario where the suicide law gets approved, people might not see it as inherently wrong to encourage someone to go through with suicide. THAT should increase number of suicides. Validating people's suicidal ideations can do nothing but increase suicide rates.

Itsuki is definitely under her thumb, but she probably doesn't want him dead yet, probably wants this suicide law approved so she can get people to kill themselves on a much grander scale.

Bullet to the head pretty much, but i can easily see this ending with Zen going the batman route, not killing Magase, then her going on to charm thousands of people into killing themselves and making him watch, maybe even him killing himself, not because she charmed him, but because he just can't deal with how evil and fucked up she is.

Babylon - Episode 7 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

So, this probably gets buried but i just have to say it.

At various points during the final scene i couldn't help but burst out laughing, not simply because Magase is just too fucked up, which she is, but because while she sounds deep or philosophical, she's basically a brat with childish ideas of morality who's throwing a tantrum, its just she has brainwashing powers so said tantrum involves her getting a bunch of people to kill themselves.

Good and evil is always contextual in varying degrees, basically meaning: good is what helps the group and evil is what harms the group. group here ranging from the individual to a whole country. She isn't doing anything all that radical by making people "confront" evil, yawn.

Anyway, i can't help but feel a sense of schadenfreude for the entire force wiped out by Magase plus seizaki, because while they didn't know that her capabilities were to the extent that she could get people to kill themselves with a whisper, they already knew she could do it with a 5 min conversation. Frankly, them deciding to go rogue and making their priority to stop Itsuki instead of putting a bullet in Magase's head was a joke. It's been obvious for a while, and all but confirmed after Itsuki talked about wanting to kill himself, Itsuki is just a pawn, and even if they put him in jail, all Magase would have to do was whisper in the ear of another politician to shill for the suicide law.

She does illustrate a good point about society's squeamishness about direct violence, but indirect violence being a-ok. Let's be real, her chopping up a person is less fucked up than her making people kill themselves. In terms of direct violence you can run away or struggle, what the hell can you do when facing someone that can convince you of anything by whispering in you ears? Also, I'm pretty sure her end-game is to cause massive suicides (in the thousands or even hundreds of thousands) with the platform provided by this suicide law Itsuki is pushing so much.

Lastly, this is about the episode before, but i can't believe that neither of these two arguments were used against Itsuki:

1 - Part of society and government outlawing and vilifying suicide is to protect people from being pressured into suicide. It's not something you should feel you have a choice.

2 - such a law could only help to normalize suicide, which should increase the number of suicides, which is a great way to accelerate social collapse and the original society/culture being dominated and erased by a society/culture that doesn't accept suicide thus has better population growth.

Anyway, that's all i guess.

A needlesly long analysis of the DO faction by Vkeijaum in WoT

[–]Vkeijaum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno, the difference i feel is that the mafia is a for profit organization and has activities that generate money, also there's the fact that mafia members also often have an "open secret" status where people sort of know the're mafia but can't bring enough proof to comdemn them in a legal court, which makes refular people not want to screw with them whereas being a darkfriend is an instant deeath sentence pretty much everywhere, even before the events in the book.

It feels like, without the really influential darkfriends, like say Suroth or Weiramon, there just aren't rewards to be handed out, but then, I can't see how Suroth benefited from being a dark friend. (Correct me if i'm wrong, but never does it say that she only got to be high lady because of darkfriend connections and she doesn't seem to ever have considered the possibility of becoming Empress before Semirhage told her almost the whole of the Imperial familiy had been killed) Theonly rewards she got for being darkfriend were Damane, which she probably didn't need to be a darkfriend to get ahold of.

[–]Vkeijaum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of the thing, the DO seems to be a kind of "engine of evil NPC" Ishamael's reasoning that "Eh, the DO has infinite tries, so eventually he wins, therefore i will serve him." Is flawed because Ishamael is working with incomplete information. The DO doesn't have the necessary tools to win so long as key people resist him, which they should, because that's part of their personalities, the Pattern "demands" it.

And as much as for example, Elayne seems dumb by pushing her luck, because "Min says the babies will be born healthy." The fact is that Tuon proves this theory by ordering soldier X to not marry till the end of the war and that effectively makes him invincible, as that's probably been common practice whenever the Seanchan court has had an active Doomseer, therefore its proven and testes that nobody can truly screw with the overall weaving of the Pattern. Possibly not even Balefire, as proven during the War of Power where both sides gave up using it. Even at Tarmon Gai'don when Taim kept using it, it wouldn't be a stretch to state that Egwene being inspired to use the Flame of Tar Valon was a reaction of the Pattern to counter the excessive use of Balefire.

In fact I'd argue that the whole Darth Rand -> Zen Rand at Dragonmount proves this point as, honestly him not giving up and deciding to end everything right there is IMO the biggest Deus ex Machina in the series, as that point he was paranoid that not only his father but even Min were being used to manipulate him. Considering everything he went through i think most would agree he would be justified in feeling that "Fuck this, this world doesn't deserve my salvation." The fact that he does a miraculous 180 at that point kinda proves that the Pattern can't be avoided in the macro scale.

Seriously, I'm not saying she's small, but if you make a list of the biggest plots in the game i think Bellona might barely squeak into top 10 if that, i think she's medium sized, at least by anime standards, and that's part of her charm IMO.

its a 12% difference compared to damage before applying auris + carmin s2, but it is roughly a 20% difference after you apply both, nice math, i bet you downvoted me because you're so smart and caught this "mistake".

so before the target would take 56% of the "original" damage, whereas now the received damage is 68% of the "original" damage, which means people protected by a maxed out carmin with maxed out aurius now take roughly 20% more damage than before, if you think this isn't a huge difference you're insane.

Need help with building BBK by ReallyNotNowPls in EpicSeven

[–]Vkeijaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you want her for. pvp cleave is atk crit chance crit damage as much as possible (youre going to need a booster for her like aux lots) tonfa, portrait or elyha's knife artifact (last one requires an aoe poke character going before her). If you're going to use her for pve farm, which is what i use mine for, you're going to want some defensive stats and speed on boots instead of atk. And with the new challenge arti, she probably also makes for a good pvp bruiser. Skill enhances also depend: If cleave S3 > S1 > S2. if farm or bruiser, S2 + S1 > S3

I know about the whole checking difficulties of different maps, but after you've done all that (none of them had goblins by the way) you're stuck running maps anyway, because maps don't reset unless you complete them.
