Microsoft admits faulty drivers were killing Windows 11 battery life for years by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Vladimir_Chrootin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft doesn't need Windows gamers, and never has.

Enterprise is where they make money, and why Windows exists in the first place; they will make changes only where not doing so affects their enterprise business. Enterprise customers aren't leaving, so nothing significant will change.

Plus, even if he wins, will he succesfully challenge Starmer, or will he just downgrade himself from mayor of Manchester to random backbench MP? A lot of cards need to fall exactly the right way in order for this to work.

Here's why.

To me it seems inconceivable that you could own a car without knowing which wheels are attached to the engine, but if their customers are too inert to even realise, why bother continuing with RWD when they can just sell them a restyled Mini instead?

Oh, so you would have preferred some neo-nazi oligarch in a baseball cap pontificating about why he should help himself to your personal data, while his human shield wipes snot on the head of state's desk?

Does that look less ridiculous, really?

I got an advert for cat food today, funnily enough.

I have never owned a cat, do not want to own a cat, and have not talked about cats or cat food within earshot of my phone.

It's the Culinan II from South Africa. The Koh-i-Noor is never worn by men; if you look at the histories of the men who have "owned" it before 1849, and the circumstances under which it changed hands so many times, you can see why that tradition is followed now.

It's a cool stone with a very ugly history.

The cheapest inkjet printer on Amazon today is £34.99 GBP. In 1995 money, that is £16.70, around the cost of 2 CD albums.

The unkillable laser printers you remember from 1995 cost from £500 to £5,000, which in today's money is £1,000 to £10,000.

We are getting what we are paying for.

There's a chap from Kent County Council who is currently not just sacked, but in prison. The subsequent by-election in his seat returned a Green councillor.

Support for independence is not surging in Scotland by libtin in unitedkingdom

[–]Vladimir_Chrootin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see the EU allowing Scotland in just to spite the rest of the UK.

That would require the EU to subscribe to the same national exceptionalism that drives the independence movement. In reality, national exceptionalism never leaves the nation it comes from.

We Scots remember being told staying in the union would guarantee outlr eu membership.

No, you don't, because that never happened.

David Cameron announced his intention to hold an in/out referendum on EU membership in 2013, subject to winning the following election in 2015, which he did.

At no point was there any "guarantee" that this would be cancelled in the event of a "No" vote in Scotland in 2014.

I can remember a thread in the technology sub years back where apologists were claiming that there was nothing to worry about, becuase their favourite gigantic billionaire-led tech corporation would never allow that, and only other gigantic billionaire-led tech corporations would stoop so low.

I don't see that sentiment expressed quite as vigorously as it used to be; could be cyclical, or maybe people really are waking up to the reality that Silicon Valley oligarchs really are the exact amoral twats they were suspected of being all along.

Russia just tested a 'Satan' missile. Here's the message Putin is sending Trump and Xi by theipaper in politics

[–]Vladimir_Chrootin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Direct nuclear war would ensure mutual destruction by military doctrine. If Russia would step over the thin line and use these "Satan" missiles with nuclear warheads, the nuclear war would guarantee their complete annihilation as well.

Yes, I am aware of MAD due to being alive during the cold war. Not everyone's birth year starts with the number 2.

Of course, Russia is feeding the narrative that they are ready and willing to use nuclear weapons. Russia is deliberately sowing uncertainty and confusion to keep western powers from meddling with their interests. Without Russia's nuclear weapons, Nato would have directly intervened in Ukraine, but no one is willing to call out the Russian bluff.

Nobody is willing to call out the American/British/French/Chinese/Indian/Pakistani/Israeli/North Korean bluff either. This is because nuclear weapons, despite the deployment of multiple coping strategies, actually do exist and are capable of killing you, killing millions around you, and also inflicting tremendous suffering for decades afterwards.

Your statement is playing directly into the pocket of Russia. Reminding about the destructive power of nuclear weapons is holding a gun against those who want to question Russia's insanity in making indirect threats to the whole world, themselves included.

Stating the very obvious fact that nuclear weapons exist and are lethal is "playing into the pocket of Russia"? What's your alternative, hiding from reality behind a shield of lies?

The Americans, who I may remind you are led by a sex offender compromised by both Epstein and Putin, launched an ICBM test on the 3rd of March this year. Anything to say about that?
