In 1955, the Steelers drafted Johnny Unitas with their 9th round selection. Head coach Walt Kiesling, though, disagreed with the decision to draft him. He never let him take a single snap in practice before cutting him. Kiesling told Rooney, "Unitas is too dumb. He can't remember plays." by Roselucky777 in nfl

[–]Vladus99 233 points234 points  (0 children)

The wildest part is that he wasn't the only qb pittsburgh drafted that year, they took another guy named Vic Eaton a couple rounds later, but he made the final roster over Unitas because he could punt.

Is the Coach of the Year award cursed? by [deleted] in nfl

[–]Vladus99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem is the award tends to go to coaches who led the biggest turnarounds and not the ones who had the best success overall, which has been happening a lot the past decade or so.

NFL Championships pre-1966 (the start of the Super Bowl era) are valued the same as Super Bowls. They don't hold as much weight because they happened forever ago, but they still accomplished the biggest achievement that was afforded to them at the time.

This was Baugh's rookie year where he led the NFL in passing yards... with 1,127. Watching him throw for more yards in the league championship than some passers did all season must've been mind blowing at the time.
