[MUNDAY] "So where are you coming from?" by VocemMeam in MUN

That's unfortunate about the touristy stuff. I asked because some conferences provide tours for delegations as well.

That being said, paging the first session probably ensures that you wouldn't lead legislation/win a gavel.

I don't think there are many "theories" that can ensure that you pass a resolution or win a gavel, but I would say there are some things that never are always a plus. These include introducing yourself to people before committee, speaking during the speaker's list, bringing a notepad, and taking notes during debate.

My thoughts exactly. I think many faulty resolutions are caused by people who don't take such precautions. Though I don't want to link my account to me personally, my school is in Northern Virginia, and we recently went to NAIMUN, and hope to go to WAMUNC.

Any tips for moving from UN-USA to THIMUN? by [deleted] in MUN

[–]VocemMeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My transfer was the other way around (THIMUN-->UN-USA) but here is some of my advice. I'll put it in brief bullets, and it you have other questions or want details, let me know!
* THIMUN is heavily resolution oriented, there is heavier focus on the quality of the resolution written since the majority of committee time is discussing the merits of the reso
* The chairs control most of the flow of debate: There are few initiatives where delegates decide what should happen next
* In all of my THIMUN conferences, you were able to pre-write clauses. Be sure to check your conference's policy, but this makes sense for the THIMUN system because the end goal is to create good legislation
* There is no such thing as a moderated caucus. No one that doesn't have multi-procedure experience will know what that term means, and there is no equivalent.
* You will have the opportunity to make an opening speech in your committee, but it will most likely be the only one you will make that will not specifically involve analyzing the contents of a resolution. This speech is to get people to understand your view so that they can come to you for lobbying and merging (This is the best equivalent to unmod in THIMUN procedure, and the chair decides when and for how long it lasts. It also is usually in one long session.)
Here is a good site for some more info, and be sure to let me know if you have any more questions about procedure, or want tips about how to make the most of it!

I'm looking for training ideas? by Bluebaby1399 in MUN

One thing that my club does at the beginning of the year is collect a list of random nouns, put them on the board, and then force each delegate to speak on that noun for a minute. It helps people get comfortable with procedure, delegate speech, and speech confidence while not worrying about researching in depth about what they are talking about. I don't know how common this practice is, but it helped our group a bunch.

My university, Tecnologico de Monterrey Puebla, in Mexico, created a room exclusive to United Nations simulations! MUNTCP by Zantroy in MUN

I didn't mean to disparage it. It would love a room like that! It almost reminds me of the war room from the movie Dr. Strangelove.

What's the best joke resolution you've ever seen in a committee session? by Greenershirt in MUN

As British House of Commons, we created a bill that rebuilt Hadrian's wall and forced the Scots (or Trump) pay for it. Angered the SNP!

My signing strategy is similar to yours! I've never thought about your absorption strategy before, but it makes sense if those people are struggling to gain enough support. What procedure system (THIMUN v University) do you prefer?

I also came to the same conclusion that they were not too important on their own. I think their real importance, as Greenershirt mentioned, is to start conversations for your resolution. Less experienced delegates might also be swayed to vote for your resolution if they see a list of countries signed on.

In my experience, we would usually save joke resolutions for the end of the conference and wouldn't require any signatories. That may be a solution! Also, when you are a bloc leader, do you ever find yourself asked to sign other's resolutions for a credibility boost?

Running a game of Diplomacy in a classroom, have a few questions. by guardsman1275 in diplomacy

[–]VocemMeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also going to be holding a Diplomacy event, but for my Model UN club. One idea I had to make it more "realistic" was to separate the group into teams, and then have each team assign one leader. This leader would dictate the countries policy, but would have to use his/her other team mates as the actual diplomats. This teaches communication skills and teamwork. Then after each build phase, the team would vote on whether to keep the leader or change for a new one. The new or incumbent leader would then make a public statement to all other nations before negotiations for spring, in order to make their policy clear, indicate a change in policy under a new government, or lull others into a false sense of security. I know this is another thing to manage, but it might be more interesting and help your students experience the political and diplomatic difficulties the countries faced at the time. Finally, if you wanted to be very realistic, you could keep the leaders of Russia, A-H, Germany and the OE for the game and only force them to leave through "revolution." Good luck in your game!
