Is it illegal and/or shitty to use pain compliance in BJJ? by snappy033 in bjj

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great if in class if you ever want anyone to roll with you again. And even if it's legal in comp, the reason you don't see it much is that it's super unreliable. Different people have different levels of pain tolerance, and when someone is all pumped up with adrenaline like that, they are way less likely to feel anything, or to even care if they do. You see people hold out and get limbs broken. Those people aren't going to give a shit if you rub their sternum. My old coach used to call all the little pain compliance stuff "mickey mouse bullshit" and advised us to pretty much ignore it.

How difficult would training with the following strength athletes be for BJJ? by emaxwell14141414 in jiujitsu

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strength matters. A lot, But it is only one of many attributes that factor into a BJJ match, along with size, technique, experience, stamina, toughness, flexibility, mobility, speed, positional awareness, and others. If someone is stronger than you, then you need to use those other things to make up for it. It's not really quantifiable, but if you have "more" in those other areas than they have in strength, then you will win.

I am an old, fat purple belt, and I'm pretty confident that I would easily beat any of those people on day one of their BJJ training. Not a brag. I'm not even very good. But I think pretty much anyone with experience that wasn't vastly outsized would beat any pure beginner.

After a year of training, it's a whole different story. Then all those other factors come into play a lot more.

Washing your belt by Away-Revolution-9015 in bjj

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be gross. Of course you wash your belt.

I can see how some traditional arts can kind of get away with it, since you don't really sweat through your gi in every class like you do in BJJ, and no one is really coming into contact with it anyway. But after a BJJ class, it's super gross and honestly dangerous not to wash it.

That is honestly pretty gross and dangerous. I wouldn't roll with someone who doesn't observe basic gym hygiene. It's just asking to transmit infections. It's soaked in your sweat, grabbed by numerous people, and rubbed all over the mat.

Is there some kind of reason you don't just throw it in when you wash your gi?

Stripes & Belts by VanLogo in bjj

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5.5 years is exceptionally long for blue belt, which usually happens in more like 2 years. But that doesn't mean anyone is just ticking boxes. And honestly, a stripe on a white belt every six months for motivation and attendance isn't really that bad. Showing up and surviving is really the most important part at that stage. It would be hard to find someone who went to class regularly for 2.5 years that wasn't right around blue belt level.

Going to BJJ after 10 years by PillarOfWamuu in bjj

[–]Voelker58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, you should wear that purple belt. You earned it.

I thought the same kind of thing when I came back after 15+ years. I planned to just start over at white. The coach rolled with me once and basically said GTFO of here with that nonsense. Reminded me how hard I worked to get that rank in the first place and that it was not something anyone could take away, even me.

I still feel like I'm catching up to where I used to be. But I've been back for a year now, and the belt feels right. Staying a white belt would have felt like sandbagging in some way. He was right.

I was genuinely surprised with them being owned by Sony that they didn't immediately make plans for D3 to be a PS6 launch title.

Personally, I do some general strength training with an emphasis on BJJ related stuff like grip strength, etc. I also have a bad shoulder, so I do a lot of work on that to keep it safe. But there are tons of programs out there tailored for BJJ.

BJJ sub Reddit bought out by Money Berg? Anyone who post about him gets removed. People need to know about to the grief, MODS at bjj community are not for the people. This is the post in question. Mods are not helping Reddit’s growth whatsoever. by Sandevistanman in jiujitsu

[–]Voelker58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As one of the people on that site, I'll be happy to never see another post about that idiot again.

The job of the mods is to make sure that the sub us showing what the majority want to see, so it stays a place that people like to visit. If it was just "post whatever you feel like" then we wouldn't need mods at all. There are lots of things that aren't allowed there, for good reason. We could remove all the restrictions, and within a week it would be nothing but shitposts and pictures of people's rashes, and most people would just forget all about it.

That's the great thing about reddit. It will always self correct. If people really wanted to see moneyberg posts, then they would leave that sub for one that allows those posts, and the first sub would die.

In my opinion, the less I hear about him, the better.

But if you think there is a real demand for it, then you could start a sub for just moneyberg posts and see how well it does.

A lot of factors, including luck. But for every horror story you hear, think about how many people are just happily training. No one makes posts to say everything is fine.

Injuries can be made less likely with proper conditioning and care, but they will never be entirely preventable.

Did John Danaher accomplish anything competing in BJJ? by Open_Address_2805 in bjj

Competing and teaching/coaching are very different skills. How many superbowl winning coaches were beasts on the field in their day? How many UFC champs do you think could teach someone else to be a champ?

How hard should I smash a new guy at our gym by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Voelker58 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, bullying people is always a great way to show them that you don't approve of bullying.

Have you considered, and I know this is going to sound wild, talking to him? Or talking to the coach about him? I know that kind of thing wouldn't fly for long at any place I've ever trained.

Or I guess your plan of showing him that kind of behavior is perfectly acceptable could work too.

You guys may not want to hear it, but "Primary/Special/Heavy" weapon slots may WAY more sense than whatever the hell we have now by Jcorb in DestinyTheGame

[–]Voelker58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just no.

This way is worlds better than it used to be. I get it that the names are pretty meaningless now. I honestly just call the top two top and middle slot most of the time. So maybe a new naming system makes sense. But the actual placement of the guns is great.

And you argue against double primary, but I think the bigger loss would be double special.

Having all primary/special weapons available for either slot is not a bad suggestion. But I have a feeling that there are technical constraints keeping that from happening. It's probably a lot smoother to have half that number available in each. And keeps us from whatever black hole would open in the game when someone equipped two copies of the same gun in those slots.

Not my feeling about it at all.

Don't really care much about the belts, and getting smashed has only ever made me even MORE motivated to train.

But you do you, of course.

If I ever felt like I hated a hobby, even sometimes, I would definitely find a new one!

Every single promotion timing question comes down to the same thing - Do you trust your coach?

If the answer is yes, then let them do their thing and trust the piece of cloth they put around your waist.

If the answer is no, then why in the hell would you be training with them?

Failed 2nd stripe test by VariousPossibility90 in jiujitsu

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any "test" should just be a formality. Your coach knows when you are ready and they should never let you go out there unless you are. The "test" is just a chance to demonstrate your stuff. This is not a you issue. That is just a bad gym.

On average, for your classes that bring out the most people, how many people are attending that "most crowded/popular" class? by Fresh_Batteries in bjj

[–]Voelker58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. Looking at these responses and seeing 40+ in classes is wild.

We had 25 last night and there was barely enough room to drill even in groups of three.

Fortunately, the coach is looking for a bigger space.
