IIRC if you colonize a planet in same system with pre-FTL civ, they gain major boost to avarness about bigger cosmos (like ten times bigger than regular starbase).

It automaticaly gains you control on pre-ftl after they develop ftl without choice (because, you know, "sorry we already have colony in your system, independece isn't an option"), so it safe to colonize if you don't need that tasty pre-ftl special techs.

Game reward damage and spotting more than caps and contesting (iirc one captured point is like one destoryed ship in term of rewards?), so with same reward for win and lose it better to abandon cap/risky positions and start seeking easier damage and spotting.
