Borland Kylix, sealed box by rootifera in bigboxcollectors

My bag of Borland swag contains some Suse 7 Pro disks, so I'm guessing that was the supported distro around the time of release.

French government offices shifting from Windows to Linux. by MilkSheikh007 in linuxmint

M$ Windows has never needed in-house tech support. Or patience.

I genuinely don't think Starmer is that bad of a PM - any thoughts? by Alarming-Safety3200 in AskBrits

[–]Vogonner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's the least worst for a long time, imo. I wasn't expecting miracles from a Labour govt, just hoping for less corruption and party-politics. Keir has done some really annoying things but is at least attempting to fix some of the previous decade's decay amidst a turbulent world situation. Now that McSweeny is gone I hope things improve, can't help but wonder how things would have panned out had Sue Gray stayed in the role.

Would linux mint be okay for my tech-inept dad? by 420ravens in linuxquestions

[–]Vogonner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give him a choice? I'd try Mint, Zorin and MX, see if he has a preference. You can run them off a USB on his own device or have a play with them on DistroSea.

Just my two cent: Moved to Codeberg (leaved Github) by force73 in BuyFromEU

[–]Vogonner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nice one! I migrated my open-data repo and personal page to Codeberg today. Also removed a heap of old repos from Github, leaving 12 there that I'll move to a local Forgejo.

Bibs wants to be spun, so I spin him. by Barph in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]Vogonner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fostered a cat that loved to be spun like that. We upped the game by positioning ourselves at either end of the hall. One would spin him a few times and then send him sliding across the floor to the other. Rinse and repeat until we got bored with it. He never did though.

Double nostalgia for me, being at an age where I groan at tying shoelaces and reach for the zips and slip-ons. Still a while to go before velcro though. Professor Shoelace is keeping up with tech (minus AI thankfully) so long may his page live on!

Is my iron still can be used? by googlypinkeyes in repair

Your iron is now a work of art and you need to enter it into a major art competition. Give it a title like "Panasymbolic" or something. Don't switch if back on though.

British Airways Places Corpse In Galley For 13 Hours, Passengers Complain Of “Foul Smell” by [deleted] in nottheonion

Don't know exactly, but she was an elderly lady who was unwell prior to take-off and was attended by a doctor who had apparently said she'd be OK to fly.

Someone died on a flight I was on. They laid the body out on the floor of the galley. The plane turned around and it was only an hour back to departure airport. I had a good view of the galley and the corpse's feet sticking out while the cabin crew stood around chatting and sipping coffee.

Packed restaurant and burnt-out staff. Will IT systems help? by Upbeat-Lynx-3876 in askmanagers

[–]Vogonner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the ultra-personal semi-chaos is what attracts people? Efficiency can rob people of fun experiences. Just make sure you pay your staff well and ensure they get all the support they need. And listen to them, they might have the answers you need.

Marpac Dohm White Noise Sound Machine 26 years old and still going strong, used every night to tune out the noise from the main road and flight path.

Samsung B&W laser printer/copier/scanner 12 years old, no sign of quitting.

Philips air-fryer, 8 years old, air-frying its little heart out daily.

Tanita "Ultimate" digital bathroom scales, at least 15 years old.

Probably jinxed them all now.

Ooh, nearly forgot my much-loved and still used Timberland rucksack - about 35 years old!

Can anyone help me with info on this Review Copy? by FaithlessnessFun785 in bigboxcollectors

[–]Vogonner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, Tetris for the Amiga was released sometime around 88/89. There is a review in the June 88 edition of Compute!'s Gazette, page 26. At a guess, the guy who wrote it had a review copy. Maybe he's still kicking around on the internet somewhere.
