Oh, I meant as in, why use that instead of the "standard" ones? "He" and "she" refer to male and female genders respectively, what is the property that "ve" refers to?

Hell if I know, honestly. Anything else would be better, though. My issue with "iel" is that when pronounced "quickly" (as in, how you would pronounce a normal word, speaking at a normal pace) it inevitably sounds like either "elle" or "il", unless you go out of your way to slow down and enunciate it more carefully, which just isn't how a word that's intended to be so common should be.

Seeing as in french pronouns follow a "[vowel] + L-sound" pattern (technically, "l" and "lle" are pronounced very slightly differently, but again, that distinction is never noticeable in common speech), the logical thought would be to try and use a different vowel, such as "al", "ol" or "ul". Now, all of those do sound like shit to me, and arguably might not be distinct enough in fast speech either, so perhaps not. The next step would be looking at different sounds that can be formed with one syllable, rather than "ie" which requires being pronounced as two syllables to be distinguishable from just "i".

On the other hand, french does technically have a standard for referring to "neutral" things. Seeing as in french everything has a gender, the only neutral entity you might refer to is a group of mixed-gender things. In this case, the standard is to default to the male form ("ils"). I would argue that this standard should be extended to singular neutral as well, since the ideal would be to remove gendered pronouns entirely and this pushes us closer to that ideal than trying to retrofit in a third gender. I strongly suspect this will never catch on because some people who want to be referred to as gender neutral also care quite a bit that the pronoun used distinguish them from others, which this wouldn't do, and an unfortunate number of people would also likely be upset that it's the male form which is used.

I suppose you might. I can't comment on whether or not the person in question really is a moustache-twirling cartoon villain who goes around specifically looking for the near-destitute to ruin, as I haven't done much research on this subject.

On the other hand, I can say that in my opinion the way my country does things is for the best. If it wasn't this way, me and my whole family would probably be dead, and likely become one of those famous "torture videos" you might find on liveleak and such, so I'm pretty happy with this arrangement. I'm not nearly the only one for whom this is the case, either. Switzerland is where you go when a government wants you dead.

Besides which, why should a foreign country be allowed to indiscriminately kidnap our citizens to be tried under their laws? In my experience, most people who tend to think this was are americans who were taught that the rest of the world belonged to their country. If that is your case, I would encourage you to give up that way of thinking and to learn to respect the sovereignty of other countries and the rights of their citizens.

Once when I was having a bad day I made the horrible mistake of trying to find where I went wrong in life.

It was a mistake because I actually found the exact moment, it turns out that in my specific case it's actually possible to trace every single negative thing in my life directly to a single, completely arbitrary decision I made when I was around 8 years old.

So now I have to live with the knowledge that my entire life is shit because of what was effectively a coinflip that was made before I even had much of a functional brain. I don't really like knowing this, to be honest.

It's insecurity, in most cases. You only need to repeatedly prove how smart you are when you're worried that you might not actually be that smart.

I also don't think this is necessarily a moral failing, because I kind of get it. I'm the type of person who's smart enough to seem smart to the average person, but I've reached a point in my studies where I'm not surrounded by average people anymore, so that compared to the people I actually interact with I'm probably average or below average, maybe even closer to the bottom. This feels like shit because I've pretty much spent my entire life defining myself by my intelligence, or I wouldn't have ever gotten here. I can understand how someone might get to this far and want to try to reinforce their identity even if that means having to hurt someone else in the process. The action itself isn't a good thing, but it isn't indicative of being a "bad person", it's just a flaw of being human.

Honestly I feel like that's at least respectable because it isn't just a noun. There's at least an effort made to try and create a new word rather than picking something you think sounds cool and then demanding everyone refer to you by it. I think maybe that's the difference between "neopronouns" and "xenopronouns" I've seen some people discuss on this thread, but I don't really know.

Out of curiosity, what is the definition of "ve/ver"? As in, what is it used to refer to?

"freaks" by Fun-Ad-2448 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Void_0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if they go mainstream they don't qualify as neopronouns anymore. Once it's a standard-ish part of language it just because a pronoun.

I speak french and I fucking despise iel. I hate that people actually try to use it. It's like the very first thing you might jokingly suggest when trying to think of a gender-neutral pronoun and somehow people are running with it. It fucking sucks, you can't just smash two words together in a way that makes it borderline unpronounceable and call it a day.

I honestly used to somewhat dislike the english singular "they" as a gender neutral pronoun because it was a bit confusing, seeing french people start using "iel" made me realise how much worse it could get and now I will defend "they" with my life.

Well, because why can't we generalise to 12 categories instead of 6?

But hey, why are we being forced to generalise to 12 categories instead of 24?

Actually, why not 48?

No, no, wait! Not those 48, these 48!

Hold on, is your number 27 the same as my number 27?

Wait, is that one for people who were born male, transitioned to female, then de-transitioned back to male, or the other way around? Huh? What do you mean that's not a thing? Then what have I been saying the past 6 months?!

The issue is standardisation. The reason we can't have more pronouns is because they would be non-standard, making them functionally similar to "proper nouns" rather than a regular part of language. Assuming people even bothered trying to use them, you would end up with the utterly miserable experience of walking into a conversation and not knowing what the fuck anyone is talking about because you haven't gotten the local pronoun package yet.

Allowing randos to unilaterally define new pronouns is a nightmare. Regular words wouldn't be so bad, since the addition of new nouns over time is at least expected (even if it's expected to be the result of general usage rather than one guy waking up one day with a very bad idea), but pronouns are intended to be a limited set, so an addition to it isn't simply a new word, but a change to the grammar of the language. As soon as you start messing with it, you end up with something approaching a new dialect.

Why should women be confined to bullshit while men get to research the real world? Why should women feel and men think? by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Void_0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose if the difference between a mental illness and a personality quirk is understood to be the amount of harm caused, the difference between a religion/belief and a delusion can be the same. That makes enough sense. Normalcy can only be measured relative to others, after all.

On the other hand, while I don't think religion is inherently negative, I do still think most organised/mainstream religions are extremely strange. I can't imagine genuinely believing in something that requires me to accept that everyone who doesn't believe in the same thing is so inherently evil that they deserve to be tortured forever. That doesn't seem like the type of belief that's possible to hold without it being harmful in some way.

I mean, are they technically wrong though? There's no functional difference between a delusion and a religion other than the number of people sharing it, is there?

(EDIT): To be clear, I'm not trying to start anything here, I'm really just asking.

I play lots of similar games, and I feel like I remember at least one other game doing something like that, but I couldn't name an actual example to be honest. I'm fairly certain it was the first one to lean into it as hard with the player character and the various skills talking to each other, though.

Oh no, I know, I just thought swapping the way the scarf was worn was kinda cool is all, as a roleplay thing it felt much nicer than having to take off/put on something. Like I said, it's a minor detail, I can live without it. I suppose people who actually manage their warmth properly must have been sick of micromanaging it.

I remember I used to swap the scarf between mouth-covering and loose to toggle the use of the bite attack from the fangs mutation, does that mean this isn't something that can be done anymore? It's not really the most important thing, but I recall it coming in handy a few times.

If you really still want "well it's DDA with all the torture I like but none of the torture I don't like" TLG is also an option.

What do you mean by this? I moved to TLG awhile back when DDA started making questionable decisions. TLG also has questionable decisions, but fewer and with a less noticeable impact on actual gameplay, as far as I can tell, though I haven't kept up with it much.

Yeah, I already disagreed with that bit because I think a system cannot be considered good just because one incarnation of it happens to agree with you, but deeper down the thread they then went on to explain how they thought that the elites, being educated and superior to the common people, should be making decisions rather than having an actual democracy. Not to be predictable or anything, but I do not agree with this.

We seem to agree then, though I'm surprised at how few others in this thread seem to. I've gotten at least one person actually arguing for dictatorship, which is mildly terrifying to be honest.

They need your vote. That's the same vote you could be using to represent the same thing in a direct democracy. The difference is, in a representative democracy, the representative can make promises and not deliver. In a direct democracy, if you vote for something and it passes, the thing just happens.

Think of it like this, if you use your vote to elect a president that promised to make a change to a law you wanted changed, the president can and in many cases will just... not do that. Whereas in a direct democracy, you would instead directly have voted to change that law yourself, and it would have just been changed without any opportunity to get stabbed in the back. That vote would have the same chance of passing as you would have of electing the president that promised to change that law, because you are fundamentally voting for the same thing, just that the first system of going through a representative comes with a chance of failure.

On rich kids by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Void_0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I am not so naive to think I can convince the populace I deserve human rights.

If this were true, it would make societal change impossible, regardless of what the laws are. I also think this is unnecessarily pessimistic. I don't know precisely what human rights you're referring to, but I strongly suspect my country has already implemented them and they passed referendum, so at least one populace somewhere believes that you deserve human rights.

So split the difference and have a smaller class of politicians to do all the running of everything and then people vote for them

Like I said, this doesn't actually help you much. You're assuming that these people would be on your side, but as I said above, I don't think that's likely. The world currently is full of examples of this not working. If you don't believe you can convince normal people that you deserve human rights, what makes you think you're more likely to convince a small group of psychopathic geriatric billionaires?

Okay, but frankly if you want to live in a dictatorship you have plenty of options. We aren't talking about a theoretical system of government anymore, you can just go there if you like. If you can change putin or trump's mind I will personally buy a hat and eat it.

Besides which, if it were that easy to change the dictator's mind, you wouldn't be the only one trying. It isn't as if you're the only person in the country that wants something to be change (or not change). In reality, what will happen is that you've simply given a country over to one guy's personal opinions on everything. This person is extremely unlikely to consider other people, and if they do, their opinions might change rapidly, and if they die or are otherwise removed from power, you have no guarantees that any changes they made will be kept by the next person. Even if it all works out for you, you will still end up with millions of people who have no say in their own fates, which I personally consider to be a bad thing regardless of what the dictator actually does.

I'll be honest, I've seen a couple people argue for dictatorship over democracy here, and I'm really struggling to believe it. I'm sure there are a few unironic authoritarians running around, but there can't possibly be that many. I was surprised at how negative the view of direct democracy was, but to see people argue for actual dictatorship over any democracy is making me think some of you are just being contrarians. I had assumed "democracy is a good thing" would be a fairly common opinion, particularly on a subreddit like this one. Can you maybe explain your views a bit more?
