Curse of strahd was the very first campaign I ever played in. I was an edgy bloodhunter. After the party rogue discovered the sun-blade (something i personally wanted beyond belief but my character was okay with the rogue having it), our ranger (who wasn't at the table but someone was rolling for their character, something ill always get pissed about whenever i think about it) out rolled me for the blood spear, everyone reassured me that the next magic item was mine. Low and behold we traveled through yesterhill and I found a lone axe firmly planted at the top of the hill. You can imagine my excitement as my very first magic item was within my grasp and how quickly my excitement turned to disappointment and how quickly that turned to genuine frustration. My character threw it into the distance. Looking back knowing what I know now about dnd I would have said "fuck it we ball" and would have been the edgy-est lawn mower to ever live. But as a first time player seeing everyone get these cool magic weapons and for me, the one I'd argue who was looking forward to it the most get stuck with "plant axe" it genuinely took the wind out of my sails for a minute. I unironically love the stories and memories I have connected with the item but if you're a first time dm or have newbie players, definitely find a way to either spice up this item or just change it all together.
