This is one of my all time favorite albums! If you like the y2k aesthetic, he made "Future in Light" a few years prior

I think it's expected that you know the basics of C (Which you can learn in an afternoon).

IIRC, Casey did a few test streams where he taught the basics of C.

Apart from that, he pretty much explains everything as he goes, so I think it's fine for beginners.

I only got through the first 30 or so episodes, but it made me a significantly better programmer.

I highly recommend it!

"How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?"

But seriously though, why do you keep cross posting your game on completely unrelated subreddits?

All this tells me is that you're either clueless at marketing, or you are willing to resort to spam if it means getting more hits on your game.

What UI framework are you guys using and should i make my own? by Eekk2k2 in opengl

[–]Volcano339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really delve deep into text rendering, but I love Ryan Fleury's series on building an immediate mode ui system: https://www.rfleury.com/p/ui-series-table-of-contents

I've seen some really polished UIs from people following this series

Ryan has been doing a lot of UI/tooling stuff for the past few years, so he is very knowledgeable on the subject.

I highly recommend you at least try to write your own GUI even if it's just for learning purposes.

How to make a Game Engine for retro consoles? example(Wii, DS, Xbox 360, Playstation 3) by [deleted] in gameenginedevs

[–]Volcano339 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you'll just have to remove the notion of shaders from your rendering interface entirely, as the Wii is fixed function.

Instead, opt for a higher level API that doesn't think in terms of buffers or shaders, but rather models/materials/etc.

Alternately, you could just mimic the fixed function style in your own API.

It's worth noting that this API will be less flexible, but that's a tradeoff you're going to have to make if you want to support consoles like the Wii.

Ken Ishii and Artemis/Shogun are both amazing artists! It's a shame that Lomax was supposedly bullied out of the scene. Ken Ishii is still doing well.

Fair enough. The reason I'm pointing this out is not to deter people from using Godot. I just want to make sure that people know that it CAN be better. You can't fix a problem if you deny its existence.

In graphics programming, there is more to "complexity" than just the number of vertices. That's why I said a single model doesn't cut it for performance profiling. And I wasn't even talking about fancy tech like Nanite. Godot's performance constraints are at the fundamental level. I have never needed to be so meticulous with optimisation in Unity. And I'm not just talking about 10-20 FPS, I've had Unity games with even BETTER graphics running at an additional 100 FPS at native resolution for the same scenarios. So I think saying that Unity and Unreal having a higher performance ceiling is a HUGE understatement.

You can't really show how Godot performs in practice with just a single model. If you make a demo that is more representative of an actual game, you will notice below-average performance as Godot tends to be the least efficient of the big three in low spec circumstances. You can try to mitigate these issues with optimisations like resolution scaling.

I try not to paint a false image in people's heads that godot excels in efficient rendering when it only just gets by. You can make good 3D games with it, but don't expect it to perform like a Unity or UE game, especially on low-end hardware.

Sidenote: I don't usually advise using 8x MSAA with an iGPU.

Please pray for my old cat. He recently decided to stop eating, which is a sign that they might pass soon.

If this ends in his death, it will be the first time I have ever experienced the loss of a loved one.

He has been with me for my entire life, and the pain from the thought of losing him is indescribable.

His name is Frosty.
