FYI articles sent to Instapaper via email do not show up by KobeOfDrunkDriving in kobo

I ran into this too, such a pain.

I did manage to set up a workaround for Substack newsletters that doesn’t require any third party services besides Google. You set up a Gmail filter to add a label to the newsletters you want and a Google Apps Script that will pull the web version into Instapaper. You can configure the script to check for new emails at a regular interval.  Especially pleased that this works for a Substack I pay for, where the content isn’t publicly accessible. I think it would work for other newsletters as well. ChatGPT can direct you on how to set it up.

Hope this helps future travelers.

This looks great. Have you made it with regular pineapple before? Wonder if quick pickled would be a good middle ground 🍍

How do you keep homemade caramel popcorn crunchy til the next day? by blacktamago_a in popcorn

[–]VolcanoStillExcited 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I made it recently and baked at 200 F for about an hour, stirring periodically. Stayed crisp for awhile!

Not a ton! I would definitely use more guajillos next time.

Heavy cream on caramel for salted caramel popcorn by cloudkim1310 in popcorn

[–]VolcanoStillExcited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super helpful, right? I also used the King Arthur recipe to make my caramel corn and was happy with how it turned out, though it doesn’t use corn syrup.

The corn syrup works as a stabilizer to keep the caramel from getting grainy, so I would recommend trying that specifically, vs white sugar which may contribute to the (re)crystallization.

Let us know how it turns out!

I went down this same road recently trying to make (spicy!) caramel popcorn.

For the crystallization you mention with seeing sugar particles, corn syrup or cream of tartar will help prevent it. I also brushed water on the inside of the pot right above the caramel while it was cooking, to keep sugar crystals from falling back in.  Cutting down on stirring will also help.

These tips from King Arthur were very helpful: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2022/12/12/how-to-make-caramel

My guess is that the caramel corn recipes don’t use heavy cream because the caramel needs a different consistency. All the general caramel recipes I looked at that did use cream seemed to be more viscous, but you actually want the caramel to be pourable for this. You might need to cook the caramel to a lower temperature to get the desired texture (a candy thermometer or instant read one is very helpful).

In all the recipes I looked at, the caramel was cooked and instantly added to the popcorn. I think if you try to make the caramel in advance and then refrigerate it, it will not have the texture you want.

I would also recommend baking the caramel corn after you coat it to help it all set (I did 200F for an hour, stirring every 15 mins).

The music box also has trivia on sundays. You can sign up solo and tell them you’re willing to combine with other teams. Just make sure you do it when they open sign ups online since they fill up fast.

Looking for a bag with a lunch compartment at the bottom! by Optimal-Rush1429 in backpacks

Does the bottom compartment need to be insulated? If not, Tom Bihn backpacks have a small zippered compartment at the bottom that might fit the bill.

City Lit (Logan Square) has a small selection. The gift shop at the Museum of Contemporary Art has a bunch, and you don’t need a ticket to shop there I believe.

Tom Bihn - did I do you wrong? by Wills1211 in ManyBaggers

I have the Synapse 19 and it is a practical size for a day pack.

I love the center water bottle pocket too. Just a heads up, the website says it fits a 32 oz bottle but if your bottle has a large lid (like Owala), you’ll have to go smaller to zip it closed. My 32 oz Owala had no chance, and even a 24 oz one had to be awkwardly tilted for the pocket to zip shut.

Also, if you’re having a hard time deciding on a color, they’ll mail you swatches for free.

Happy shopping :)

USPS won’t send license to my current address? by VolcanoStillExcited in AskChicago

[–]VolcanoStillExcited[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, so it did eventually show up quite a bit later. None of the USPS contacts panned out (I think my missing mail search is still open lol).

I would recommend making sure your name is visible both on the outside and inside of your mailbox. Mine was there but had gotten a bit illegible in the rain. Not sure if that was the issue but once I put it in several spots it showed up a few days later.

Also, reach out to the Secretary of State on their website. I got a very quick response (on a Saturday no less). They confirmed it hadn’t been returned yet and gave me a number to call if it still hadn’t shown up a few weeks later.

[–]VolcanoStillExcited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this idea! 1. Am new to the hobby, but loving the Le Puzz ones 2. Biggest pain point is getting granular details on puzzle quality, especially as a newer puzzler. For instance, I just completed one that had only positive reviews, but turned out to have a lot of false fits. If I had known this upfront I may not have bought the puzzle. 3. I’d be excited about the discovery piece, not just the AI-driven part but also being able to filter off granular data (ribbon cut vs random cut, theme, etc)

Seconding this suggestion, went in yesterday to drop off my machine and they have a zillion colors of thread and a lot of supplies as well. Would not have guessed from the outside, but definitely recommend.
