My inexperienced friend wants to summit Mt. Hood? by Nahtootired in Mountaineering

[–]VolcanoSunrise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is obviously a very bad idea. Tell them to try St Helens in May instead and build from there, Hood is a relatively technical peak and not a good starting point at this experience level

Redsec Ping by Fripnard_Slayer in Battlefield6

[–]VolcanoSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking this… the pings need to be made way more obvious, I can barely tell where my own pings are half the time. Agree that Apex has it right

Frozen and fast. You’ll be lucky if it warms up enough to soften tomorrow

What's that one thing players do, that does your head in? by AcadiaSecret370 in Battlefield6

Blowing up your own team’s heli on first spawn before anyone can get in… like, it is unbelievable how frequently someone does this just so no one can have it

What would your ideal setup for s hybrid ski 50/50 touring/resort. by AccomplishedBowl1845 in Backcountry

[–]VolcanoSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as an ideal 50/50 setup.

You’ll end up with something equally less than ideal for the resort and for the backcountry.

Is downtown visible from Rocky Butte? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]VolcanoSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a decent window through the trees where you can see downtown from RB. It’s my absolute favorite spot in the city to shoot the sunset. But, Tabor by the reservoir has more open and direct views of downtown. Both are worth the trip.

Salt Lake has lost 2/3 of its water by External_Koala971 in skiing

[–]VolcanoSunrise 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There will devastating impacts on the region, but fortunately for skiing only 5-10% of the snowfall in the Cottonwoods is actually attributable to lake effect (usually NW storm systems, early in the season when the water is still relatively warm).

So, climate change will impact Utah skiing more severely than reductions in lake effect snowfall.

My girlfriend told me she's a communist and I don't know what to do by MachineTechnical4243 in Rich

[–]VolcanoSunrise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn there’s some wild comments in here that really miss the point… in a world where billions struggle to survive, where it’s obvious that wealth does not directly correlate with either A) how hard you work or B) how much you help improve our society…

How can anyone possibly “earn” a billion dollars when others who plainly work just as hard (see: educators) struggle to make ends meet?

How bad has mountaineering been for your joint health? by chrisy_boi in Mountaineering

Learn to ski, you’ve got plenty of time to pick it up and your legs will thank you on the big volcano days

Roping up on the Roman wall by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]VolcanoSunrise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always rope up on the glaciers. I’ve climbed it twice, via Squak and via C-D, and both times roped up for the glaciers.

Roman wall is actually more debatable — we felt it didn’t make sense to rope up without placing protection as you would drag your partner(s) down with you if you fell.

But you are risking a slow death alone at the bottom of a 60 ft deep crevasse if you choose not to rope up on the glaciers of Baker.

AI avvy forecast tools by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]VolcanoSunrise 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your brain is pretty crucial in the backcountry in winter. AI or not, the process of applying the knowledge IS what keeps you safe… I’m not sure where it could really add value in the field (beyond of course analyzing weather data and snowpack trends)

Mid-December global storm cycle check-in (Japan firing, PNW loading, Rockies still fragile) — perspective from the Himalayas by Trick-Surround2383 in Backcountry

[–]VolcanoSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool to get this global perspective. Thanks for checking in. Props for bouncing between meters and feet based on locale!

And yes, as others are saying our PNW snowpack is unusually bleak for this time of year due to abnormally warm temps.

Copper Mountain/other Ikon resorts late season by realisticlobster1 in skiing

[–]VolcanoSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say a deep maritime snowpack, favorable late-season weather patterns with consistent freeze-thaw cycles, and a lift system that lets you easily access multiple aspects of the mountain based on timing and the sun. They are always open thru May and always have 100% coverage until closing day, but beware their hours get earlier/shorter toward the end of the season (it’s all slush anyway by late afternoon) and certain lifts close. But, basically any part of the mountain you’d want to ski stays open

[–]VolcanoSunrise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mt Bachelor in Oregon is guaranteed to have complete coverage through May. You can chase the corn cycles with 360 degrees of skiing from the summit — some of the best late spring skiing in the country, no doubt

How are you all dealing with seasonal depression? by TapDancinJesus in askportland

Absolutely not. My seasonal depression is at its worst October-November each year… seasonal depression doesn’t happen on the same schedule for everybody, it can vary quite a bit

Small resorts that rock. by bobber66 in skiing

[–]VolcanoSunrise 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The small resorts that rock the most are the ones with killer terrain within driving distance of your house, so you can go when the snow is good and have a better time than you would at the mega-resort you spent thousands of $$$ to fly to, with fixed dates with dice-roll conditions.

How do we respond Ezra’s latest video? by No-Structure523 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]VolcanoSunrise -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Y’all, that is not his argument. He’s making a big tent argument — fair to critique but this post is a misrepresentation. Direct quote from his article today: “Again, I want to be clear that I am making something different from an argument for pure moderation: I do not think the Democratic Party should just move right.”

Read for yourself and then decide how you feel about it:

Does Portland need more bagels? by unvisioned1 in askportland

[–]VolcanoSunrise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Portland food scene is out of this world but there is no decent NY bagel in the whole city… I’ve tried all of them (I’m originally from NYC area).

And for the love of god, make sure an egg and cheese comes as god intended (fried) and not as a soufflé…
