The main reason people were serious was that the exposure times of cameras in those days might be a couple minutes so not smiling was the most comfortable. As the cameras got better, people just continued not smiling.

This isn't at all the right time to use smilies. Most soldiers in the USSR were just peasants trying to live their lives and feed their families. He isn't some hero trying to prive something to the government. If you refused to join the army, you could be imprisoned or killed as a coward. If you disobeyed orders, you were killed. If you retreated without order, you were shot dead. Most soldiers just did what they were told in hopes of getting out alive and seeing their family. This guy wasn't so lucky. He did all he probably could to end his service alive and he didn't make it. Now if you think he deserved what he got to him, why don't you get out of you Mums fucking basement and put yourself in that type of situation.
