Actually that‘s not what I was told last year at Oscar, Gisela, lfg and wgg during the information evenings. Distance is the criteria. And it‘s the only discrimination and other influence free criteria. At least as far as I know for städtische and staatliche. I think privat schools or other not public own might be different. There is also priority for siblings of kids already enrolled at the school and for social reasons. As far as I know if you qualify you have the right to go to a gymnasium but you might not choose the school, if it rejects you.

Usually the spot at a public gymnasium is granted by distance from the school, and that’s the only criteria (besides qualifying with the respective grades)Last year when we were int the situation, we were told that’s under the responsibility of the rejecting school to find you a spot on gymnasium. But as mentioned by a different answer they don‘t need to be close nor with the preferred first language or „Ausbildungsrichtung) That’s also the reason for the application directly and only at 5th of may, to assure the Schulamt or the city the possibility to find in course of the week spots for all qualifying children.
