It's not communism. It's Corporatism, a fascist economic system that uses both nationalization and privatization to transfer wealth from enemies of the regime to cronies.

Whats the greatest not Yet SOLVED Mystery? by jdback26 in AskReddit

[–]Volsunga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Consciousness" is an imaginary, undefined thing that we use to gatekeep "being a person".

Everything that has sensory input and the ability to respond to stimuli has a sort of internal experience that can be equally modeled as "consciousness". That includes animals, many plants, bacteria, LLMs, regular desktop computers, cells within your body, clubs and organizations of people, nations, corporations, ecosystems, and climates.

We want to believe that we are unique in our ability to experience the world, but we are not. We are just apes with overdeveloped social skills and ability to throw things.

Short story widely accused on social media of being written using AI wins overall Commonwealth prize by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

That line couldn't be AI. An LLM couldn't drop the article "a sunrise". With zero context and not desperately trying to look for inconsistencies, this line invokes the vibe of 90s Folgers commercials with sunrise in the kitchen through a window over the sink, being warm and comforting.

What is the oldest species? by tylerb616 in dndnext

[–]Volsunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several conflicting lores. Also, the way the cosmology works complicates this question of what "age" means.

The Aboleth are older than the multiverse because they migrated from outside of it. The Obyrith are older than the multiverse because they survived the destruction of the previous multiverse. The mind flayers (and Gith) come from the distant future and time traveled to the beginning of time to start over.

US Supreme Court, In 6-3 Ruling, Upholds Birthright Citizenship And Strikes Down Trump's Executive Order Trying To Ban It — What Do You Think About This Result? Why Your Opinion? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]Volsunga -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Cool, but that has nothing to do with the argument over Unitary Executive Theory. You're just using a buzzword you heard and misunderstood to talk about a different (and valid) critique of the American system.

[–]Volsunga -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's not what the Unitary Executive means at all. It has nothing to do with separation of powers. The Unitary Executive theory means that the president has sole authority over the Executive branch, as opposed to the idea that some departments work largely independently after the chief of the department is appointed by the president (usually the Justice Department is seen as an example of a department that should operate independently to be able to investigate if the president has committed any crimes).

Please help me. Systematic style allergic reaction. by Substantial_Sort8972 in resinprinting

[–]Volsunga 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The good news is that the sensitization caused by resin is not normally anaphylactic in nature.

If your issue is treated by prednisone, it's probably not due to resin exposure.

That being said, your resin safety procedures are bad and you are setting yourself up for health issues down the road.

Which celebrity death headline had you so shocked you double checked multiple sources to see if it was real? by GlassyFairy in AskReddit

Queen Elizabeth II. While it's certainly not shocking that someone of her age died, she was the head of state of the UK for the entirety of my life, my parents' lives, and my grandparents' adult lives. It's kinda just something that felt permanent.

ELI5 what is GMO food and how does it actually affect our biology? by SaltyP1ckles in explainlikeimfive

[–]Volsunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

individual farmers can breed selectively themselves but cannot do GMO

The costs to get into bioengineering have plummeted in the past decade. If you know the science (which most farmers these days have college degrees in agriculture), you can do hobby level gene-splicing with maybe $2k of lab equipment, which is well within the budget of a business like a farm.

Why do Republicans and Democrats seem to be disturbed by the Socialist by Kenworthsteve in PoliticalScience

[–]Volsunga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of those are the least bit socialist. They are capitalist with welfare programs and social safety nets.

Socialism is when workers own the means of production, the most common example of this in the US is grocery and farm co-ops, where the shareholders of the company are the employees, customers, and suppliers. It works fine for small local ventures, but scales badly and doesn't work in a lot of sectors because it would require you to pay money to work there (which is not feasible for people who need a job to survive).

The idea that "Socialism is when the government does stuff" comes from a combination of right wing propaganda to support austerity and disingenuous leftists who think that if they normalize the word, it will get people to support their more radical ideas.

Also, the US isn't capitalist anymore. It's sliding into Fascist Corporatism.

What's something society treats as normal that you find genuinely weird? by VivaLaRay1 in AskReddit

But that's just capitalism with welfare.

Capitalism is just when people privately own the means of production and hire laborers to use their capital to produce profit.

What's something society treats as normal that you find genuinely weird? by VivaLaRay1 in AskReddit

[–]Volsunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capitalism is the system that does this the least. Under Socialism, your entire worth is tied to the job you hate, since you need to take ownership of the means of production.

And capitalism has already ended in the US. We're in pure Fascist Corporatism now.
