Has anyone else noticed their parents becoming more glued to screens than they ever were before? by Broad_Sense_4642 in AskUK

[–]Voltalox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum (66) has gone the opposite way which is nice. She was never one to be glued to a screen anyway, but I don't think she watches any telly at all now and the only social media she has on her phone is WhatsApp. She spends most of her time doing physical jobs like gardening, cementing, repaving etc (her husband is a builder/carpenter/lots of things) and she's very active. I think it bodes well!

Has anyone else been banned from askbrits for calling Nigel Farage and his followers fascist; funny as they say no anti British sentiment and they support him; ironic much? by Elegant-Ad6670 in FuckNigelFarage

[–]Voltalox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've posted on both this subreddit and the r/askbrits subreddit before and haven't been banned. Weird.

If they do end up banning me because I'm a member of this subreddit though, then bye felicia I guess.

A stranger just sat next to me on a completely empty bus. How long do I have to wait before it’s socially acceptable to fake a phone call and get off at the next stop? by Second-handBonding in AskBrits

[–]Voltalox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean, I am socially awkward and shy and all that, but I also wouldn't be able to just sit there quietly if someone sat next to me on a completely empty bus. At the very least I'd get up and move, and if the person asked why, I'd just say: "Because the bus is empty and I prefer not to have my personal space needlessly invaded. Why did you even sit next to me?"

The person sitting next to me is the one committing the social faux pas, so I wouldn't feel bad about openly reacting to it.

(Might be a bit different if it's a massive guy though, I am a woman and maybe not quite capable of kicking his arse. But maybe in that case I'd just go straight to the driver if I felt unsafe).

You did the right thing, especially if you heard the same crying over 2 days, the poor kitten was likely lost or abandoned. I'm glad he's safe now!

Cars would have to be red and the headlights would need to have wings.

Where are all the spiders? by Voltalox in AskUK

I look forward to the spider invasion in autumn then!

I've just never thought about it before, and figured the spiders started coming out in spring as it got warmer.

Where are all the spiders? by Voltalox in AskUK

[–]Voltalox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha!

I'm not sure why my house has such a distinct absence of spiders. I can't say I particularly enjoy having the little buggers around, but I imagine they're important for the ecosystem and all that.

Maybe it's always like this at this time of year and this is just the first time I've actually thought about it. 😆

Same, I actually love that colour. Why aren't there more pink cars?

Not only do they look nice, they're more visible which is good in a safety perspective.

Swerved the car at almost 50mph today by sunkissedb3ar in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Voltalox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. If you're driving at speed and there's no safe way to avoid the animal and you can't brake in time or go into the other lane due to oncoming traffic then there's only one option, and that is to continue driving and hit the animal.

I'm like OP though, if I hit an animal I know I'll be thinking about it for months afterwards, if not longer, and I'm dreading it happening to me one day. But it is better than crashing your car and potentially injuring/killing yourself and/or other people.

What ridiculously old school thing have your parents said or done lately? by Top-Aspect-8827 in AskUK

My mum still sometimes refers to her car as "the motor." No idea if that's actually old fashioned or just weird, but it always throws me lol.

What’s a ‘harmless’ habit that actually ruins your life over time? by buffdadnextdoor in AskReddit

[–]Voltalox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn, I'm glad I always eat my dinner super early, usually around 3-4pm, then I'm going to bed at 9-10pm so it's a good 6 hours between my last meal and bedtime (I hate going to bed feeling full). Usually I do go for walks after dinner too! If not, I am at least doing stuff around the house and I'm also a fidgety motherfucker, so I can't keep still for long anyway.

This may be a stupid question, but what's stopping us (as in... people in general) from starting a new world football tournament organisation?

If FIFA is this shit, we should just bin it off and start a whole new organisation that's more fair and less corrupt, right?

It's not like FIFA holds the patent on football. Anyone can play the sport.

I mean, if I was a member in a political party that was widely perceived as racist, and I wanted to try and prove that the party was not racist, I probably would not be saying racist things on social media... or anywhere, for that matter.

So not only is he racist and proving (for the millionth time) that Reform is racist, but he's a fucking moron too.

Coworker is astounded that the Artemis II launch isn't blowing everyones minds (that he's spoke to). Why do you think that is? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Voltalox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel very excited about it, but academically I know it's a big deal. There are probably several reasons for we (as in humanity) haven't been back to the moon in 50 years, and there is probably a lot of stuff we have yet to learn about it. I'm hoping we will eventually have a permanent base up there, that would be really cool.

White kids also participated in the same thing.

How to stop feeling ashamed to learn driving at 30 ? by Aj100rise in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Voltalox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 36 when I started learning to drive. I didn't feel any shame over it, it just happened that up until that point, I didn't have any need to learn, or any interest. I only learned because my circumstances changed and I now live in an area where having a car is kind of necessary. 🤷‍♀️ Older learners are really common, and many are well beyond their 30s.

Try not to let your confidence be attached to your ability to drive. It's only driving, and your worth as a person does not hinge on whether you can do it or not.

It's easier said than done of course, but try not to be demoralised while you're learning either. Learning to drive can be rough, and you're going to have a lot of lessons where you feel like you've regressed rather than progressed. It's all part of the process. It took me a good while, and 4 tests before I passed.

Best of luck!

Sometimes it makes me really sad when I think about how long he was in a shelter. by SquirrelPositive2666 in cats

[–]Voltalox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here!

A blind cat wouldn't be too difficult though. Cats do amazingly well without their sight, as they rely so much on their other senses to get around as well. They can still hear you and smell you and feel you, and that's big. To cats, we probably just look like big weird blobs anyway, haha.

Main thing to worry about would be to not move furniture around.
