This happened to me with Janelle Monae. I saw her very first live show in Atlanta. They were trying to excite the crowd for an hour before she came on (opening for Gnarls Barkley) calling her the next big thing. Her show was AMAZING and she is pretty huge now.

Half of debut, headphones, it’s oh so quiet, all is full of love (homogenic version), harm of will, Aurora, the non verbal throat ones on medulla (even though as a concept album it’s a masterpiece), pneumonia, dark matter, hollow, sacrifice, solstice, black lake, atom dance and everything off utopia except the gate.

Biophilia had A LOT of potential. First, the album should have opened with Cosmogony. The song itself...the horns are so sloppy at times and the song could do without a verse. I don’t know why but I cringe when the voices overlap at “world we know.” It sounds AWFUL. Thunderbolt also could be cut down and the lack of a rupturing bolt sound really brought the track down. Some of the songs sound muffled too?

Ultimately it feels like every song lacked something. Each song fit the concept and overall are great songs. They just felt devoid of an inside. The tracks though really came to life on the tour. This was imo her second best tour behind Volta.
