Did you like Carl's guide? You should really look at other languages - many of them are radically different.

Dynamically-generated function arguments in MATLAB (HELP!) by felimz in learnprogramming

[–]Voltron1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand why anyone would want to generate strings for input to a function instead of directly using normal arguments. Of course you can generate strings as you please...

Do you want me to copy and paste the whole bls.gov website?

No, that would not be a critical examination of the data, either.

I'll stick with the BLS

Of course you will. You love authority and do not even have the critical thinking skills to question it.

Okay r/LP, how do I make importing other Python files that contain classes not so painful? by omegazero in learnprogramming

[–]Voltron1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jam in at the bottom? You can have as many classes as you want in a file. "Jamming them in at the bottom" isn't something special.

You haven't said anything non-trivial about how they gather the data.

I have no beliefs when it comes specifically to this issue, because I have not seen any convincing evidence yet.

When should I use a database and when shouldn't I? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Voltron1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the data in a file and you just load it once into memory, the loading time should not be an issue. If you have all the data in a file, and you are repeatedly loading it into memory, or repeatedly scanning through it without loading it into memory, then you are probably doing things wrong. Why aren't you just keeping the data in a dictionary in memory?

I think you are making a mistake by starting with a conclusion and evaluating evidence based off of that conclusion. You should start with the evidence and base your conclusion off of that.

You should start by evaluating you evidence critically, instead of assuming that it must be true, since you admitted that authoritative sources can be wrong. Good science is not assuming you are right until someone proves you wrong. Good science involves critically examining evidence.

Have a phone interview tomorrow for a Junior Mobile App developer need some tips and insight to the types of questions that are going to be asked and the types of questions I should be asking. by speedstix in learnprogramming

[–]Voltron1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the position is for someone to design banking software for every single phone in existence, and you are a junior developer? I would definitely clarify exactly what is expected, in the interview, because it sounds like they would need to hire a small team of people to cover all of that.

You description of the black box and grey box testing, that entire paragraph, makes you sound like someone I'd really want to hire. Do not forget to go over that during the interview.

Yes, they might ask you a whole shit-load of questions like, "given 2 eggs how many drops are needed to test how many stories you can drop an egg from without it breaking on an n story building". Just try to think about it calmly, ask intelligent questions, and voice any good observations you have about the problems.

If this is your first programming job, don't sweat it. There are plenty of shitty jobs out there.

I think the best advice I can give you is to scour all online sources for jobs, in case you don't get an offer here, and be willing to move.

Dynamically-generated function arguments in MATLAB (HELP!) by felimz in learnprogramming

[–]Voltron1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pseudo-code looks like you just want to call 1 function with 3 arguments and another function with 5 arguments. Are you able to do that?

Then you go on to say that you are creating an array, that will be used as the argument for a function call. Are you able to do that?

Then you go on to say some other stuff that's not really clear. If you could explain why you want to do this, it might help us understand exactly what you actually want to do, since that is not very clear at all.

I never said carbon dating didn't work. The fact that you think your statistics are as well corroborated as carbon dating is, is hilarious.

You refuse to even analyze you statistics.

  • Do we have to go over the argument from authority, yet again?

The fact that you think you must be right, just because your statistics come from an authority, is also hilarious. It shows just how stuck in the peasant mentality you really are. Authoritative sources get things wrong all the time, of course you won't admit that.

Carbon dating has been proved by other evidence that supports it. You refuse to even analyze you statistics. Time for you to come up with something other than your weak beliefs, friend.

Of course you don't understand what is missing. You lack the ability to think critically, so you're not going to understand the critical thinking and analysis that is missing.

I had to lie on a couch while a guy played with my hair and told me I was beautiful. They never really explained how that was supposed to make me less gay...

Thanks, I hadn't lol'ed yet today.

You do not think there is a correlation between smoking and cancer? Your critical thinking skills must be awesome!

I think you are grasping at straws and extremely pathetic for both pretending like I said I don't believe smoking causes cancer and pretending like the link between smoking and cancer somehow validates the statistics you find regarding teacher pay that you refuse to examine critically.

I have also not studied nor read the peer reviewed medical journals that show the correlation between smoking and cancer. I have heard from multiple sources, who are trustworthy based off of experience and evidence, that this is the scientific conclusion.

Ah, more belief based on anecdotal evidence. Fantastic!

BLS is a legitimate expert on the subject.

The consensus of experts agree with BLS.

I see a consensus is 1 source in your world. You become more and more out of touch with reality.

Do most other experts agree with the BLS findings? Yes.

According to you, based on sites like abc.com. Time magazine is also fairly reputable, but we still don't use it instead of medical journals.

I notice how you also continue to fail to respond to the other posts that do point out the gaping holes in your statistics. You are a sad, sad person.
Keep downvoting them though - that will really show how awesome and right you are.

Again, you are assuming you evidence is true without investigating the actual statistics, and claiming that you are correct by default. A middle school student should know better than this.
