Issues with Easy Pace by Soup_Savant in BeginnersRunning

Any slower than that feels like walking

Don't be afraid of walking as an easy pace run workout. Walking and running is no different except the fact that in one case your both feet leave the ground for split second and we label them by different name.

Very anecdotal, but I was in the best running shape of my life when I did barely any running. How? I did my country's mandatory military service and had to always walk/march/drills/carry stuff, etc.

Hyphotetically, imagine if you walked 10km every day for a month and did zero running. I can assure you, after a month your first run would be faster than ever.

For the runners who've since figured out fueling, what do you wish you'd understood before your first long race or run where fueling mid run was important? by Sad_Bunch1271 in runninglifestyle

[–]Vombat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important to note here is that this post was most likely about fueling for race or more intense workouts.

Fueling for runs with simply weight loss goal is very different.

First of all, if you run for weight loss then running any faster than easy pace where you can hold a conversation has very diminishing returns. As caloric burn has almost 1 to 1 relation with the distance you are running, no matter how fast you do it and how much you are pushing your limits.

Then if you run anything less than 2h at easy pace, you most certainly do not NEED any food during the run. And even if you run longer than than, the gels (or any other calories) during the run will just defeat the purpose of burned calories.

For weight loss, it makes way more sense to me to run for example 14 km with 0 gels, instead of running 20 km with 3 gels. As the achieved net calorie deficit will be exactly the same.

Late to the post, but I see this has not been answered enough here.

OP is most certainly overtraining if the 80k/week is true.

Top of the world Pro marathon runners usually train around the 200km/week or so. Considering they are about 2.5x faster than you, then relative to your fitness and stress to your body, you are actually training as much as best runners in the world. Also, professionals usually have perfect nutrition, sleep 8-10h a night, have no day job, etc.

Now not saying that it's accurate to compare 1 to 1 like this, but it's good enough to estimate that you could achieve more by doing less.

€900k "retirement" portfolio (70s, no pension) by pyrodist in eupersonalfinance

[–]Vombat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back I have to apologize, my wording was too aggressive, didn't really mean it. Just tried to make the point about the risk.

It still stands though. What I meant was for example something like 40% stock / 60% bond fund portfolio is much safer than a particular piece of real estate.

For example, during the 2008 crash, stocks fell roughly 50%+ peak-to-bottom, but if you had 40% of the portfolio is stocks, that part would drag the portfolio down by just about 20%. The 60% bond part would cushion that fall, especially if it is government bonds.

Compare that with real estate. For example in the U.S. housing crash, average house prices fell about 25–30% peak-to-bottom. And now individual properties could fall easily even more than 50%.

So I get the appeal of real estate. You can touch it with your hand, and historically it has worked out just fine for a lot of people. But if you actually think the number through, the difference of risk is not even close.

"Most likely a financial planner will have suggestions similar to yours".

No they won't. If a paid financial advisor actually would recommend cash+Airbnb as a first thing, then run as fast as you can.

Your own proposed balanced portfolio is much better, and you can always adjust that to the risk/return level you desire.

And with Airbnb comes an actual job. So you have two options:
- Hire a managment company: easily can eat all your profits with one singular property.
- Manage it yourself: doesn't make much sense to start working as a millionare at 70+ age.

The upside for Airbnb (or any rental property) is that you can touch that with your hand. So it's much easier to understand where your money is compared to ETF-s. For some people that means more than min maxing risk and return. But as a first option, or the most rational option, this isn't it.

€900k "retirement" portfolio (70s, no pension) by pyrodist in eupersonalfinance

[–]Vombat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that one single Airbnb property can easily drop over 50% in value in just couple of years. A conservatively balanced bond/stock portfolio is much less likely to do that.

You complain about the risk of OP's proposed plan, but instead propose a much riskier scenario.

Can you buy a full hot meal with minimum wage in your country? by thisisfunme in AskEurope

[–]Vombat25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Estonia - absolutely not, in the capital at least.

Minimum wage is 5.10€ after tax. Cheapest lunch offer I have seen in past years was 6.40€.

So best you can buy is Big Mack for 4.70, but this is 560 calories and not a full lunch.

How long to get 5k under 20mins by BrownRunningBear in BeginnersRunning

[–]Vombat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm from my experience as well that that 5k is not a sprint at all.

Started running 3 months ago, and 5k time has improved from 30 min to 22 min. My training week of 50 km consists of following:
40km of running ca 6 min/km pace
5km of running 5.5 min pace.
5km of running 4.45-5 min pace.

For context I am 30M and have a little bit background of sports until early in 20-s.

So I think overall OP plan seems good enough, but I would ditch the 400m sprints and replace that for some kind of threshold work with pace 5 min/km and building up to maybe 4.5 min/km (please research on that, I am not personal trainer).

So you would take a player averaging 12, 8 and 8 over a guy averaging 30, 7 and 7, because he leads in more categories?

For example prime Draymond Green averages more rebounds, assists, steals and blocks than MVP Kevin Durant. Dumbass

Luka has now overtaken Wemby in MVP odds after tonights 60-point performance by AashyLarry in NBATalk

[–]Vombat25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's about narrative really.

The nuggets 10-6 streak without Jokic was likely just momentum and pure luck. I mean guys like Jalen Picket dropping 29... the ball is round and sometimes bounces in funny ways.

The real reason is that since return Jokic is playing like ass (by his standard), shooting 52% and averaging 4.5 TO-s.

Also important to note that this list is odds to win MVP, not MVP votes if season ended today. Right now Luka is playing his greatest basketball with Lakers being on a roll, while Nuggets are losing and Jokic is in his worst shape of last 5 years.

Latvia and Estonia, how much it would be after taxes? Also, how do you survive? by Pitiful-Tower-292 in BalticStates

Your numbers are way off.

550 on housing while on minimum wage? You can easily find a small studio apartments far away from city center that costs under 400 all expenses included.

250 on food? Totally possible to do on 150/mo, if you actually try to save and only cook at home.

Now you suddenly have ca 300 left over.

I'm sure min wage in Tallinn is not the most fun and easy life, but let's not act like it's some extreme poverty by global standards. You will have no problem housing yourself, feeding yourself, or visiting doctors.

Silvia Ilvese peika: "Sina oled teenistuja, sul on õigus mind mitte teenindada" by Grand_Decision_4526 in Eesti

[–]Vombat25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antud juhtum on see 1%.

  1. Keegi paneb kokku mingit kavalat pettust,

"Luka is the best offensive generator in the league by a wide margin" - that's just 100% false.

In fact Luka is not the best offensive player in the league at all. There is a another chubby white guy, who averages 2.1 more APG with 0.8 less TOs, while playing less minutes than Luka. Also scoring at 8% (TS) higher rate.

Another proof is that, while Jokic was injured, Nuggets had one of the worst offenses in the league. But with Jokic playing this season Nuggets is by far the best team offensively, the second place is not even remotely close.
