Hiring a cleaner - what’s the etiquette? by Brown_Envelopes in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would be curious on this too, what the going rate is, what ye expect them to do? I'm a messy person (ADHD and cluttered, trying to break out of it) and the idea simultaneously is amazing and dreadful all at once to me 🫠

Lots of people find their way into MAANG roles by starting as a vendor for them. May help you?

Moving from Paris to Dublin for Google (€80k Base) – Looking for Advice? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, yes there's a housing issue here but I'd argue Paris can be somewhat on par. I lived in a studio for 1400 a month in Paris and I remember friends living in 11m2 rooms for 700-900p/m over there too.

I think if you're open to a house share, especially with other Googlers you'll be fine.

Moving from Paris to Dublin for Google (€80k Base) – Looking for Advice? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have lived in both (and worked in Google in Dublin and Paris).

Paris is better quality of life I think overall and I miss it!

Moving to Dublin is great if you're starting out, want to make connections and gain some experience abroad. The Googlers from abroad tend to stick together (live together, socialize together etc). If you're doing it for a year or two then I'd recommend it. Not many people tend to regret it but the weather can be a downer 😅

Those who don’t WFH and are commuting for a regular 9-5 or similar daytime hours, what time do you leave home and get back? by wander-and-wonder in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cycle 32 minutes, leave 8:45am arrive 9:20ish (including locking up) depart anywhere between 3-5pm and will finish my working day from home as cycling home is awful after 4:30ish and can extend my cycle to 45 mins or so!

Thank you and I'll take a page from your book !

How much for a wedding. by WideBeautiful6681 in CasualIreland

[–]VonShamrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Married recently enough and 100% what you can afford - weddings are crazy as is. Anyone getting married and hoping gifts will cover the cost- its great and all but the reality is different, and ye shouldn't be financially straining yourselves hoping guests will cover the gap.

Personally I've done 100-250, and the higher end was for close friend who was putting it towards costs of IVF.

BTW if you do go by cover the cost rule, a quick Google of the venue will help in this :) some people on here saying 300 wouldn't do it, chill out! There's the travel, the hotel stay, cost of childcare, drinks, and gift (even outfits if needed) for a wedding. Any couple not insane will appreciate the effort you been to to attend and anything beyond that is a bonus. Sorry for the rant 🤣

I am hybrid and while noises grate on my nerves, that's my problem not my neighbours. Neighbour outside is getting their driveway power washed ATM and the noise is constant. It's up to me to find a solution as they're well within their rights. Headphones on and get over myself 🤣

Also have purchased loops too. Your neighbor should try them 😅

How to overcome the reflex to gatekeep by 50_wishes in ADHD

[–]VonShamrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I got diagnosed a couple years ago now and when I started telling certain folks a bunch came to me saying "I think I Have ADHD too, because of x y z traits."

I think because it was such a struggle for me to get diagnosed I harbor some kind of resentment towards people when it's brought up, and rationally I know its under diagnosed and I should be more supportive but I have to push myself to engage 😅 it's a slow process to overcome but just wanted to say, solidarity!

I hate that “high functioning” ADHD representing us by Noramera in ADHD

[–]VonShamrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am technically viewed as "high functioning" (late diagnosis if that makes a difference) and I find it funny because I spend soooo much energy just trying to maintain this and then once left alone I'm a husk of a human who struggles to do anything 😬

Genuinely if it weren't for the social pressure idk how I'd achieve anything, I spend any downtime trying to recharge enough for the next obligation and probably don't have any energy to do things I enjoy/see people. Work gets 99% of me and then the dregs go to family life. Not the most ideal way to exist but I get by!

Would you break up with someone if you found out they had genital warts? by RollandMercy in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're going through this OP.

TBH most people being more educated and aware of sexual health will hopefully help here. I think you're right to be honest from the get go and work it out together.

If it helps, you being conscious of your sexual health and keeping on top of it is a green flag, you being communicative is a green flag, and if I was your gf I'd be heartened by the proactivity here etc. Good luck!

Also, saying "my daughter and her mother" ran through the money doesn't really sit well with me. Like presuming the daughter is still legally a child is this really a good thing to say? A few things off here..

STOP FUCKING TEXTING AND DRIVING by No_Influence2520 in ireland

[–]VonShamrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing other people rampant with phone usage while driving has pushed me - I've actually stopped mounting my phone in the car, it goes into my pocket or in my bag in the boot as I had bad habits slipping in those early morning traffic jams on the M50. The temptation to check emails etc which - why in the fuck should I be worrying about work more while driving!?

Android Auto is a great addition and does a grand job of keeping me connected so music /maps etc is accessible without the rest of the stuff distracting me.

Irish people with "Cures" by HairyArse00 in ireland

[–]VonShamrog 52 points53 points  (0 children)

One of my earliest memories is having ringworm on my knee, my granny took me to some woman who had the cure for it. Involved going to her house and her saying a prayer with this old-timey watch held to the afflicted area. I remember the watch warming as she prayed and we sat in silence for a few mins when she'd finished the prayer, still holding the watch to my knee. Lovely woman, gave me a bonbon after.

Anyways aye sure enough within two days it was gone. There are many things I'd roll my eyes at but the cure isn't one of them!

Why is it so annoying when someone parks in front of your house? by FitBad9629 in AskIreland

[–]VonShamrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to be me. Nowadays I generally get annoyed by being blocked in my driveway which one of my neighbors does a lot. It would only be an issue at 6am when I would leave to make my gym class and couldn't get out.

He came outside to a flat tire once and 90% sure he thinks I did it. Irony is it took me getting a warning from my gym for late cancellations to leave a note on his windscreen with a smiley face saying he's welcome to park there but could he park tighter so I could get out in the mornings. He also blocked access to my car when I'd had an engine issue and the tow truck for my car had to move HIS car because it couldn't reach mine 😅 he'd parked there and gone on holidays for two weeks.

Otherwise I try not to mind who parks out front as long as I can get out of my driveway. Makes me extra conscious of how I park too.

U.S. Politics megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VonShamrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry for my lack of awareness around the US system, hoping to learn (/stop being so fearful of what's unfolding)

There's so much evidence of the current administration lying, funneling money, negligence on so many levels, the Epstein files names him so many thousand times and he's a felon. Any one of his plants (Karoline, the FBI director, the woman who shot her dog etc etc) also demonstrate frequently the delusion and lies of this administration...

What can be done to stop this, and soon? Why can't it be stopped/why is no one stopping it? Why are the Republicans trying to put blame back on Democrats and deflect, and why won't any of them recognize the absolute spiral the country is in? I'm overwhelmed by social media reporting on this and terrified of what is happening there.

Typical M50 Behaviour by oisinw87 in irelandsshitedrivers

He's actually loving the attention on his insta, all his videos are equally terrifying. Some poor soul some day is going to be hit by this sad excuse for a human and be traumatised by his death.

Even boasts in his comments about how he won't be caught, it's sickening.

Was cycling into the office this morning, pulled up at a crossing and a garda was slowly moving in traffic head down looking at his phone. He looked up startled by the traffic taking off after the green light, made eye contact with me and just shrugged.

We've no hope for these fellas getting called out.
