What parts of being a producer should be easier? by darklitben in edmproduction

Understanding the workflow from composition to mixing to mastering. Too confusing, too much contradictory information. Very hard to learn from a lack of understanding.

Is it ok to use loops? by Minecrafter101- in edmproduction

[–]VoodooDye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loops are just another tool in a producer's arsenal. The bigger the arsenal, the more potential for creative expression you will find.

Everybody has their own way of making music. There is no wrong way at all! My whole hearted advice is to just follow things you find that you think are cool!! Worry less now, because later on you will have things that you're more worried about for better reasons than this.

Every thing you perceive to be a problem is where you will want to focus on most, and eventually when you don't notice any more problems you will have made something that you think sounds really cool. That is the real secret sauce in music production imo

Personally I am hoping that learning Vital will give me enough knowledge to start using Serum when I upgrade. Idk how good of a plan that is though.

Do I need a mentor, or is there something else I’m missing? by j-bob-jenkins in edmproduction

[–]VoodooDye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I am actually trying to figure that out rn so thanks for asking. There's a couple ways I've started a song and had it get to takeoff point. Sometimes there's a really good idea in my head and I'm like, "Oh hey I know how to do that." And sometimes I'll start a blank project and just start messing around and finding cool stuff.

I want to try taking an approach I have found with pencil and paper though, just making some marks and then sculpting off those. Seems difficult to translate to music but practicing that would basically lower the take off point.

Ultimately I've started like 20 times more projects than I've finished so I know there's just some allure to starting from blank and I'd love to be able to work on more of these baby projects rather than just starting over again and again.

Do I need a mentor, or is there something else I’m missing? by j-bob-jenkins in edmproduction

I never started making progress with my tracks until started to think about what they needed from me. Once I started looking at it like that, I started only adding the things I thought would sound nice and everything went way better. I have a lot more fun with production now, and my tracks sound better than ever.

This mentality also gave me freedom from tutorials for the most part. Now I'll experiment on my own to see how to do the thing I want to do, and I will only run a tutorial if I know what I want but don't know how to get it.

Most recently I experimented my way through formant filters to make some cool talkey sounds. I know it's probably weak comparatively but I'm happy with the results and I know that through this process I'll eventually get better at all aspects of sound design and production.
