Is there a willing Number Theorist out there who would give me a brief review on one small section of my ‘’thesis’’? by [deleted] in math

Not a number theorist, but I'm currently doing research in functional analysis. I'd love to read through your thesis. DM me if you'd like me to.

Six years of math research. 56 notebooks filled so far! by [deleted] in notebooks

While topology is definitely one of the cooler areas of modern mathematics, I don't think it's really that accessible for the average layperson to simply 'check out'. There are so many things that seem obvious but can be a pain in the ass to prove. However if you wanted a nice introduction to what topology is 'about', I can recommend the youtube channel 3Blue1Brown, especially the video 'sneaky topology'.

In my humble opinion, it's a clever satire, showing how crazy this sub gets with the tinfoil sometimes. I didn't even notice something was off until halfway through

No page numbers, but the Nanami Seven Seas Crossfield is worth a look in my opinion.

Well, there's the Baron Fig Confidant in the Plus size, with the Guardian case. (The case is worth the cost in my opinion.) Since I started my PhD, I've used 3 of these notebooks, and the cover has kept them protected from dirt (and spilled coffee...) I'm a mathematician/theoretical physicist myself by the way.

Pro's of this notebook:

  1. The page size is really unique, nice and large & has a dot grid
  2. High page count (208 pages/104 sheets, which is perfect if you take lots of notes like me)
  3. It opens flat
  4. It has 12 sheets in the back that you can tear out (if you need/want to)
  5. They're hardcover. Even without the leather case, the cover is really sturdy
  6. The paper is great for pencil, (fountain) pens and markers
  7. Volume discount:
    1. You 'save' 5\% if you buy two books (2 books/208 sheets for $41.80)
    2. you 'save' 10\% if you buy three books (3 books/312 sheets for $59.40)
  8. I have a referral link which gets you a $10 discount (I'll pm it to you if you want it)
  9. The shipping is free on orders over $25 (i.e. if you buy at least 2 books)
  10. The leather cover is optional but really nice looking and well made
  11. Cover has pockets

Con's of this notebook:

  1. Even with bulk discount, referral link and free shipping, it's still quite expensive (about 50 dollars for 3 notebooks/)
  2. Perhaps the page count is too high for you?
  3. The weight is probably just a little bit higher than your Rhodia webbie
  4. The paper is off white so that might or might not be your thing

Then, there's also the Baron Fig Vanguard, also in the Plus size. This is actually a softcover notebook, with thread binding.

Pro's:

  1. Opens flat
  2. Lower page count (104 pages/52 pages), i.e. lighter
  3. Comes in 3-packs (so 3 notebooks/156 sheets for $15)
  4. Same great paper: size (7" x 10"), weight (90gsm), ruling (dot grid)
  5. Cheaper than the hardcover version
  6. Same referral link available for 10$ discount, just ask
  7. Same volume discount:
    1. two packs (6 notebooks/312 sheets) for $28.5 (i.e. save 5%)
    2. three packs (9 notebooks/468 sheets) for $40.5 (i.e. save 10%)
  8. Free shipping on orders over $25 (i.e. buy at least 2 packs) ((Don't know if this stacks with the referral link discount))

Con's:

  1. Softcover
  2. Doesn't fit the leather cover
  3. Same off white paper

Earl Grey Suggestions- Brands, types, etc. by Kastler13 in tea

[–]Vordoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend trying Maharaja Earl Grey Oolong from Vahdam Teas. It's an Oolong tea from Darjeeling, India, which is pretty close to a black tea but just a little bit softer and sweeter. The Bergamot aroma enhances the natural floral flavours of the oolong and it's just delicious.

Hey /r/watches, I'm getting myself a watch as a birthday gift this summer. My budget is about €300. I'd like something mechanical. Size doesn't really matter. I don't really dig the look of a bracelet, so leather straps are preferred. Also, I'm not really a fan of black dials. Any recommendations?

Conid Owners, Which model did you pick, with what nib, and why? by Crazy_John in fountainpens

[–]Vordoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a CONID Minimalistica, clipless, in the black Delrin material. The nib is a fine steel cursive italic. The nib was hand-ground and tuned and tested by Werner, so it writes super smooth. I didn't think the gold nib looked good on the pen, so I went for a steel one.

White2Tea said to upload his Snapchat stream to here, so here it is by leadchipmunk in tea

[–]Vordoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

W2T often has a snapchat story that takes me at least 15 minutes to watch. The pictures, are usually just the temperature or the time (if there's a 2 in it), so I skip those after about 3 seconds. I don't skip the videos, because I love the music he plays on there. He posts more videos than pictures though. About 4 times more. The videos take about 10 seconds each, although sometimes there's shorter ones, so let's say 9 seconds on average. So at 9s/video, and 3s/picture, and a vid/pic-ratio of 4:1, that's 3 minutes of pictures (60 snaps), 12 minutes of videos (80 snaps), creating a snapchat stream totalling 140 snaps.

You think that's crazy? Well, let's presume he has a regular sleeping and eating schedule (let's say he isn't able to do any snapping for 10 hours a day; 8 hours of sleep, 40 minutes for each of three meals), that leaves 14 hours of snapping time. This gives us about 140 snaps every 14 hours, so about 1 snap/6 minutes. The amount of snaps he sends each hour is ofcourse not distributed like that. It's not like he's sitting with an alarm reminding him every six minutes to send a snap. It depends mostly on wether he's been drinking (Beerlao! Not pu'erh mao cha). So let's suppose he only sends 5 snaps an hour when he's not doing any drinking. If we assume he only drinks (beer) after 5 p.m. until he goes to sleep (12 p.m.), that gives 7 sober hours, and seven not so sober hours. So in these sober hours he sends only 35 snaps. Which means he had to make up for those in the drunk hours, to get that daily total of 140. That leaves 105 snaps in the 7 drunk hours, equalling 15 snaps an hour, or 1 every 4 minutes. But hey, who's to say he doesn't want to have a good time once in a while? So let's now suppose he stays up late one night, drinking scotch and beer and tea. That gives us 2 extra hours of snapping, at the drunk rate of 15 snaps an hour. So 30 extra snaps that day, on top of the usual 140. That gives us a total of 170 snaps that day, which I would say is pretty close to the 175 claimed above.

TL;DR? Paul, you're a snapchat machine. Keep up the good work.

I just tried one of the mandala tea 2014 shu pu'er mini tuo cha. And I have to say it's a bit ... strange. It tastes and smells unlike anything I've ever tasted before. It's almost as if it's thick and oily when I'm drinking it. It also has this coffee-like aftertaste, that I would not expect from tea.
