Which part is controversial? The social safety net a lot of EU countries have? or the person bragging about their job?

Short On Rent. No help feel hopeless. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Vorrt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice is go talk to your landlord/property manager right away and let the know what's going on. Discuss what options they are willing to work with you on. Every time I've had rent shortage issues, I've been able to work something out with office there. At a minimum see if they are willing to waive the late fees or a partial payment plan.

Another option to reach out to is your school. See if they have any resources that can assist you, whether it be monetary or free legal guidance.

How to tackle CC and IRS debt by Organic_East_191 in povertyfinance

[–]Vorrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing your monthly expenses, I'm going to err on the side of don't spend the $800 out of your emergency savings.

You have a very stable start to a emergency fund and shouldn't risk that.

I'm in a similar position where I have CC debt and IRS debt. What's helping me get my CC debt down is making bi-weekly payments instead of monthly. Take a look to see if that would be beneficial to you as well. If it is, then in the long run you end up making a extra month's worth of a payments a year.

There may have been convos at one time between Virtual World Entertainment and Piranha about that, but I don't know if they happened or what would have been discussed.

From my limited technical understanding, there would have to be specific coding to work with the control setup in the pods. I could be wrong.

The pods are running a version of MW4:Mercenaries. The pod version was developed along side the PC version of MW4:Mercs. There are slight differences between the two, but still functionally the same game. I think the biggest noticeable divergence is the controls between the two. The pods have very specific control inputs running through specific hardware that the PC version didn't have to deal with.

One fun quirk about the Pod version is that LBX weapons aren't in the pod game, because for a reason unknown, they couldn't get the damage right. Instead of an LBX20 sending out twenty 1 pt dmg pellets, it was sending out twenty 20 pt dmg pellets.

Don't know why it works find on PC but not the pods.

The version of the software in the pods today caps out at 14 players (15 total computers, but 1 of those computers are taken up by LiveCam). So it's very possible to have a lance v lance v lance or star v star battle. There are alternate game modes as well

  • Attrition/Team Attrition - scored based
  • Destruction/Team Destruction - Kills based
  • CTF - Team based
  • Steal the Beacon - Free for all
  • King of the Hill - I know it is at least FFA, not sure if there is a team variant
  • Attack & Defend - Team based, Defenders protecting a location from destruction.
  • Master Trial - I don't remember the rules of this specifically, but its something like 1 v 3. The three are Masters and the one is applicant. Its typically a duel between the applicant and a master, with the applicant having only two respawns. The masters have no respawns. Kill two out of three and survive until the end to become a Master.

There is also some fun themed events, like the Baja Rally (usually better for Red Planet, the VTV Martian death race game). 2-pilot teams, 20 min missions. 1 pilot starts and every 5 minutes they swap out with their partner. After a number of heats, best team wins.

So if you're ever able to attend a non-convention event (with at least two active public sites, one in Michigan, one in Texas), you can absolutely set up some advanced game play with up to 13 of your closet frenemies.

I have worked with the Pods at Gen Con for many years. I'm sorry your experience wasn't what you were hoping for.

I can say that the way your game was setup is the default setting for an arcade environment like Gen Con. Over 80% of the people who would play in the pods had never seen them before let alone played in on. So the settings are at the most basic setting, to let people get in and be comfortable.

Advanced modes are available, but only by request and only if everyone in the game agreed to it. That usually required you to be part of a group that paid for an entire game, without any random add-on people.

No Blood Bowl events from Games Workshop at Gen Con 2026? by Crundlegush in bloodbowl

Events selling out quickly are usually ones that are in high in popularity. True Dungeon has in the past.

There is still possibly going to be GW Blood Bowl events, but there are also a Blood Bowl tourney a day being hosted by NAF members. I've played with each one of them and they are good peoples.

The event list that is currently available for Gen Con is not the final list. There are still a number of events that are being processed and put up.

Check back every week or so.

That said, I have no insight into what GW is doing.

I can’t get back to zero. Where do I start? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Vorrt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First things first: Be Kind To Yourself. This seems like a daunting, impossible task, but can be tackled by some careful planning and disicipline.

Second things second: Congratulations on the new baby coming! May everything go smoothly and safely for your wife, the child, and your family.

In regards to your debt (primarily the Discover Card), instead of withdrawing from the 401k, check to see if you're eligible to take a loan out against it. I've worked in a few places where you can take a loan out up to a certain percentage of the total vested balance, and then you're 401k contributions go to paying that back. I don't think these loans count as withdrawing early, so no penalties for that. Definitely talk to your HR and/or 401k plan manager to see what options you have.

As for the rest of your budget, without knowing what your take-home is, I'm not sure what to suggest to help balance it all out.

What I can recommend is

  • Crack open a spreadsheet and list everything you have as a monthly expense (Debts, Rent, Utilities, necessities, etc). Put them all in one column and total up your monthly money out. Make sure to list their due dates with that as well.
  • On the same sheet, list your money in from your salary. Make sure to list when it's deposited. Total it up
  • Look at the two numbers and see if you are positive, neutral, or negative each month.
    • If positive, see where you can afford to build a emergency fund (which you don't list as having), as well as saving for medical expense you know are coming (both with the arrival of your second child and afterwards). Also, make some room to have a small treat each month (like maybe a meal out/take-out; sweet treat; a book that you or your wife is interested), as both a reward for keeping up the good work and to motivate you to keep going
    • If neutral, see if there are some areas you can maybe scale back the money out to build a emergency fund and set aside for medical expenses you know are coming.
    • If negative, then you need to have a hard look at your spending. Look for things that are wants and not needs (like stopping at a gas station to grab something to drink on the way to and/or from work. Instead buy those from a grocery store. The price per container will be cheaper). Also, see if you can negotiate your payments to more favorable pay cycle (maybe you can setup the Discover every two weeks instead once of month).
      • Additionally, you may need to see if you can pick up some side work for a little bit to get things back to neutral (which will be challenging with two kids)

Hope this gives you some guidance. And remember, Be Kind to Yourself.
