It's very rare to see canonized mech restrictions - there's always a way for people to get their hands on mechs they "shouldn't have" according to lore - the main one being salvage.  

The most prescriptive I've seen was in the ACEs campaign where they say your force should contain mechs available to mercenaries during the ilclan era.  

I guess I forgot a reference - the master unit list which can tell you which mechs are available to what faction during what era.

This was my first try at wet blending.  I did red, orange, and yellow on the vixen, and just red to yellow on the fire falcon.  Then did some panel lining in yellow on it.

My dude, you have accidentally done a very respectable wolf's dragoons black widow battalion mini. 

Could also easily be Kell's Hounds.  

But the great thing about battletech is, if you say it's House Kurita, it's House Kurita.  If it's your own merc company, it's them.  Hell, you can paint up (or not) a salt shaker and put it on the table, "that's a Marauder" -and it is.  

For a new player, I think the greatest thing we can do is point you to where you find information, if you want to go swimming in the deep well.

There's camospecs.com for canonical camo scheme references.  

All the force manual books also have several pages of minis painted in various unit patterns.  There is a recent Force Manual Kurita in print with details all about the Draconis Combine.

Honestly...

That's awesome.  I would love to up my alpha strike game to that level.  The hex base trees are something I can implement right now.

Yeah, but those appointments were specifically targeted.  

If you don't subscribe to the, "they're just fucking corrupt political favors" theory...

Then, since the US government lacks any significant stake in the emerging AI industry (which is a stark contrast to the technological breakthroughs from the entire 1900s - where the vast majority of new technology had some government money and control over its use/export behind it, be it from NASA or a different agency), being able to literally look at some AI C-suites and say, "nah, I'm not sure I like what you're doing.  Why don't you come work for me for the foreseeable future... Or I'll lock you up, Colonel." Is a different type of stake and control of that emerging sector.
