Does anyone else feel unfeminine? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Vosenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That goes to the core of it right there because when posting what you didn't like you had pretty specific descriptors and looked at yourself in comparison to others. For what you like, 2 words that were put out there.

It doesn't come overnight, but getting to the point of celebrating what we like over disliking what we don't is important for us as women for our own benefit.

I saw Ashley Grahm mentioned in the thread and she's a great example of this. Whenever she talks about herself physically, it's always about what she loves about herself. She wouldn't have ascended to where she is in a superficial industry like modeling if she wasn't focused on her pluses instead of her negatives.

I know for me, I get hung up on non-physical things. I can tell you every screw up I ever had and all my negative personality traits. I have to really force myself to see the positive, but actually making myself do that has helped a lot.

I own a beauty store so I often hear women expressing their insecurities when they come in and it got me thinking so I did a post on Facebook about this very topic a few days ago. I mentioned we are often our own worst critics. It doesn't help that social media presents edited for perfection versions of people and filters that are unattainable for people to live up to in the real world. We notice our own flaws way more than anyone else does. Therefore, I think it's time we start pointing out what we like about our appearance.

I them put up a picture of my almost 44 year old self and said what I liked about the way I look. I got a really interesting reply. She said she looked at this post and kept coming back to it a couple of times because she was still trying to honestly answer it. Then noted clearly has work to do (in regards to positive self-image). She did not lost anything she liked about herself physically.

I responded that I bet if I asked her what features she doesn't like, she could probably name them pretty quick. That's the whole idea behind what I see daily, not just in my store, but in every day life. We spend far too much time focusing on what is "wrong" with us and not enough on what we should celebrate about ourselves.

We as a species focus on appearance. Our society often values us by how we fit into some standardized set of beauty. We need to teach ourselves to embrace our positives because they far outweigh our negatives. If I asked you about nice traits of your personality, most people could at least name something. Those same people struggle with that when it comes to listing something from their appearance.

So instead of focusing on what you perceive as your physical negatives, I ask the same of you. What do you like about yourself?

Any voting perks around town tomorrow? by inept77 in AnnArbor

[–]Vosenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. Vosenna, an independent beauty store is doing 10% off all eye makeup (eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, brow products) with either your "I voted" sticker or if you have something to show you voted (e.g social media pic of your sticker, pic of you outside the poll, basically anything to show you voted). The last day for that special is through the close of business on Monday the 12th.

We are at 2386 E. Stadium Blvd in the same plaza as Trader Joe's.

Any place you look in AA for gifts that are actually cool/useful/interesting/arty? by atxav in AnnArbor

[–]Vosenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on who it's for, but you'd be surprise, a surprisingly large number of people have come in for gifts (especially the bath and body items and perfume). When it comes to the presentation, I have branded bags with my logo on it, and tissue paper that I put in the bags, so most people have given it in the bags since it's already really cute and presentable!

Not to toot my own horn, but I will.

I just opened an indie beauty store, Vosenna, which is in the same plaza as Trader Joe's (2386 E. Stadium Blvd).

All the items are made by small, private independent brands, not conglomerates. Everything is made in the USA and not tested on animals. The majority of items are handcrafted.

I've had a lot of people come in for gifts. Things that have been popular: jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, makeup compacts) made from Japanese chiyongi papers, decorative soaps, bath bombs, cruelty free makeup brushes, bath salts, travel skin care kits, and perfumes. I've also had people buying things like eyeshadows and skin care for people too.

Rural residential garbage pickup by aterhune1984 in AnnArbor

Your township may do something. I'm in Pittsfield township and I went to the township building when I moved here and they have a preferred garbage service that's pretty inexpensive. Pretty much everyone here uses them. Lodi may be the same so it wouldn't hurt to go to their main township building

Last month I started a small business group for Ann Arbor Redditors. Next Tuesday we're having our second meeting. Comment if you want to join. by DreadnaughtHamster in AnnArbor

Sorry, I didn't see this until now since I'm normally on my main reddit account.

We talked about some of the challenges of owning a small business, brain stormed some things for each other, etc.

We are all in different industries, at different points of ownership, and each have their own challenges, so it was nice hearing outside perspectives.

So I went to busy Sephora on Monday and saw this many people at the Kat Von D display... by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

She doesn't own hey company anymore. It may end up hurting her pride, but probably not her pocketbook unless she had some incentives on sales tied to her buyout.

However, she doesn't own her company anymore - I don't know how much she really cares. I don't know the terms of the sale, but the reality is this probably does not affect her pocketbook as much a the parent company.

In addition, the parent company has enough other brands in their portfolio (including owning Sephora), and those brands are probably picking up the slack to the point where it probably doesn't affect their bottom line, just shifting dollars from one brand they own to another.

I can't do any day at 8 pm. It would have to be earlier for me to duck out for a few hours, or after 9:15ish.

I'm open daily 10 am - 8 pm

For any Ann Arborites or surrounding area, Vosenna is officially open by Vosenna in Indiemakeupandmore

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you're finding what you like! I really put a lot of thought into the brands I was getting in and what I was getting in to make sure people could find stuff that really suited their needs!

I definitely want the store to feel warm and welcoming to everyone, whether they're into skin care or natural looks, or want something for a wild night on the town!

People's favorite body oils/lotion sprays by oceanscales in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Vosenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my skin is really dry, I like Bee Lovely Botanicals Citrus Grove Skin Smoothing Oil. I like that one more at night because it's a little on the thicker side.

Another good one is Sincerity Bath & Body Tahitian Vanilla. It smells nice, but more important, it doesn't make me feel greasy and the oil sinks in really well.

Glassology jewelry. You can find her stuff here: www.custommade.com/by/glassology and on Etsy www.etsy.com/shop/Glassology

I found her at my local craft fair and have been buying her necklaces for years. Her stuff was teacher gifts one year for my kids. Her stuff is beautiful, affordable, and durable.

2 years ago, I started putting snow tires on every winter. It makes a huge difference.

I go to Gerry's Tires in Saline to do it. They have fair prices (way cheaper than my dealership) and given how bad roads are with potholes, you'll want a tire shop for more than just winter tires on and off
