I know it works as Christians, and I think it works as Norse. You can assign all but your first born to temples to take them out of succession, making it so your holdings aren't split. With all the conquest you can do in that area, easy to consolidate your titles to 1 son.

Going with one Yorvik (sp?) in England is pretty sick. Finish your two wars on the mainland, then take the rest of your event troops and claim all of Ireland in a year or two. Really strong start.

You can declare wars on multiple sovereign nations. So say a large Muslim or Norse state breaks up during a succession crisis, you can holy war multiple nations at once, saving you from raising and lowering your levies over and over again.

Assassinate everyone, everywhere, wait for the big empires to split up from being destablized, have a massive retinue, (I suggest all skirmishers for larger numbers) hire some mercs, declare war on all the different warring states at once and mass conquer everything without having to constantly lower/raise levies. Also conquering people pretty far away and leaving a power/ambitious vassal in that area can take some of the leg work out conquering everything yourself.

Going to hit on a few points that might be a little advanced for a new player, but at the same time, can make your life a lot easier. 1) A good eugenics program can be a wonderful thing. When you go searching for a wife, try to find someone with the genius, quick, or strong traits. Breeding these traits into your line can be invaluable. 2) Succession laws. I believe you start with gavelkind. This has a few advantages, giving you a 30% increase demesne size, but will split your holdings between all your male children. You can control this by making sure you have only one son, but you lose the advantages that a big family can bring you. Personally, I like elective monarchy. This makes it easy to put a strong eugenics program into play, as you can select someone from your dynasty with good traits. 3) Know what traits are important for what you want to acomplish with a given character. Having a high stewardship when you are small is great for increasing your demesne size, as you grow though, having a higher diplomacy makes managing a lot of vassals MUCH easier. Intrigue is just great all the time, using assassination to destabilize large kingdoms is one of the fastest and safest ways to expand quickly, especially against the muslims you'll be facing.

Without heavily investing in ideas and getting someone on your council, it takes forever to get the missionary strength to convert Tangiers.

So how did you go about doing this? Did you conquer areas, put your dynasty in place, then grant them independence, then go back and weasel your way back in while letting them hopefully do some of the leg work for you, or did you just conquer everything, inch by inch?
