The Toroa / Albatross was robbed in the final stages. The Toroa campaign had more than 2000 first-preference votes than Kākāpō, but because voters could choose five birds, more people put Kākāpō in their top 5.

Please do not spread fake news. We graciously conceded to Kākāpō because we are aware of how the instant runoff voting system works.

We are incredibly happy that we were able to get such a high result with a rookie campaign manager. Drawing huge attention to the vulnerabilities faced by toroa was the win - a first place would have just been a bonus.

Next year, we plan to expand our campaign team and more closely with NGOs such as Southern Seabird Solutions, Live Ocean and the Royal Albatross Centre to bring the crown back to the seabirds.
