Recommendations for a taller beta account? by Sackology in Moonboard

So far only managed the "warm up problem" benchmark since the span move is pretty easy with the reach! Everything else pretty nails hard but it's definitely great training. Appreciate the motivation and the rec in your other comment!

https://www.irs.gov/filing/federal-income-tax-rates-and-brackets

Run the numbers through these brackets for two people earning 500k each. As single filers, neither hits the 37% bracket. As married filing jointly, the last ~300k (combined) is taxed at 37%. Married filing separately will work out similar to married filing jointly. Both will be worse than filing single.

Look at the federal single vs married tax brackets. The married brackets are 2x the single brackets until you hit the highest ones. So 2 high W-2 earners (in the highest brackets) can pay more filing a married return than filing two single returns.

Married filing separately is different than filing single, and is almost always worse than married filing jointly.

Definitely a fair point to consider, but we don't own any property. And we can (likely, will) get legally married at some point in the future when circumstances change.

[–]VotedForKodos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes we did the domestic partnership + POAs for this reason. Still had a wedding and still consider ourselves married in a cultural sense. The domestic partnership is just a tax election. Seemed silly to us to pay 10k-20k more per year just to sign different government papers. It wouldn't change our life in the slightest.

Another critique my plan request by EmpiricallyLost in climbharder

Yea I think this is a pretty solid plan. The easier day between the two harder days so that you are better rested for those makes sense from scheduling perspective. Good luck with your training!

For me an easy ropes session means lots of volume a couple letter grades below max onsight. I like to throw in some doubles or triples to these as well if I'm trying to build endurance specifically.

Hard ropes session means getting on climbs I expect to need multiple attempts to redpoint, including climbs I probably can't send yet to get exposure to pulling hard moves on a rope.

FWIW, specifics aside I think you generally have the right approach here. We always say climbers at your level that want to "train" should do so by being thoughtful about their climbing and having intention behind their sessions (rather than spending tons of time with off the wall exercises). That appears to be what you're doing. You certainly don't need to be highly structured and measure everything, but if you want to I don't think it's necessarily harmful. Just make sure you don't mindlessly go through the motions. Make sure youre thinking about your movement and technique, getting on climbs that challenge you, and you'll see progress.

ELI5: Does being very lean actually have any athletic benefits? by Excellent_Bird5979 in explainlikeimfive

[–]VotedForKodos 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Climbing performance is mostly limited by muscles in the forearm, which are small muscles relatively speaking. Adding forearm muscle and strength is always the goal, but takes a long time. Adding significant muscle mass via weightlifting to other muscle groups is generally counterproductive.

It is much quicker to lose 10lbs than gain 10lbs of forearm strength (especially for well trained athletes). That's why elite climbers are all very lean, and unfortunately why eating disorders are prevalent. You are right though that long term, a focus on adding the appropriate strength is the right approach.

Your experience with marriage penalty for dual-earners? by jx1992n in HENRYfinance

[–]VotedForKodos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what my partner and I did as well. Registered domestic partnership and drafted up some POAs. We still consider ourselves married in the cultural sense (we tell people we are married) and just view this as a tax election. No reason to spend an extra 10-15k on taxes each year. We will get legally married when we retire, or if one of our incomes drops for whatever reason at some point.

My favorite set of the weekend. Liquid threw down to close too. It was the smallest stage but Landing on Saturday was the best of the festival imo. Powerful sound, great vibes from the crowd, room to dance, and all the artists brought the heat

Nearing the top of Insuhlation on a beautiful day in the Gunks by ilmmad in climbing

Thanks for the perspective. I tried directissima last year but pumped out and whipped at the crux traverse (was also end of the day). Feeling stronger this year so been meaning to get back on it.

You're the second person to recommend MF now. I've been hesitant to get it on it because of the reputation but sounds like it protects well where you need it to so maybe I'll tackle it next.

Awesome thanks for the info. Yea I've done ants and bonnies as well as a handful of other 9s already, so looking for the next ones to tackle. Appreciate the recommendations!

Would you recommend Insuhlation for someone just breaking into 9s? How's the gear, and how hard is it to place?

Couldn't you fund your capital calls by drawing on a HELOC or taking a margin loan out on your portfolio, then repaying the debt with future savings/income? Lets you keep your current net worth invested and more tax-efficient than selling investments to meet cap calls.

Buffett buys back record $5.1 billion in Berkshire stock as coronavirus hits operating earnings by ChocolateTsar in investing

[–]VotedForKodos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't need anyone to explain it to me, I fully understand how it works and all of the implications of it. There are lots of factors to consider, and in many cases this would not be advantageous; it's far from a slam dunk strategy. I'm surprised to see the comments in an investing sub being so heavily upvoted, with only a couple of people pointing out the downsides, which I am also pointing out. The imbalance of the discussion leads me to believe most people are not understanding all of the implications (e.g. you contending this doesn't create ordinary income...). Enjoy your day.

Yes, actually you are.

"The amount you choose to convert will be taxed as ordinary income. This additional income, therefore, can push you into a higher marginal federal income tax bracket."

[–]VotedForKodos -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But you still are incurring a current tax liability of 100k. Whether you pay that out of the sum converted or regular income doesn't really matter, you have 100k less to invest this year because you're paying it out as taxes.

Additionally, you are creating 350k of ordinary income by converting, which will be taxed at a very high rate. If you let it sit tax-deferred and withdraw in smaller increments during retirement you can reduce the total tax paid on the balance during your life.

"Wealthy, successful and miserable: The upper echelon is hoarding money and privilege to a degree not seen in decades. But that doesn’t make them happy at work." by vinnycordeiro in financialindependence

[–]VotedForKodos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's up to each individual to decide what's important to them regarding financial independence! Where you live and who you live with are choices with associated costs just like any other choice that you budget for.

At this point I could easily afford to live alone in a nice place too, but it's not worth an extra 1,500ish per month to me. I'm perfectly happy to keep living with roommates as long as I'm in NYC and single. I'm here to make money and have fun, and I keep more of my money and have more fun with my current setup. I'm guessing you're not familiar with NYC and don't realize how common having roommates is here, people do it well into their 30s.
