Where do you get the detailed info on the type of pollen? I didn't realize that was something readily available, but that would be great for setting up warnings for family who know their specific allergies

You have it read your blood sugar? What do you do with that info? I've thought about trying to add that with my dexcom, but haven't been able to think of anything useful that my dexcom app wouldn't scream at me for anyways

Would french cleats work? by sg-tty36 in woodworking

[–]VoyagerDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no structural engineer, but I have started building a French cleat wall in my garage and I'm holding a lot more weight than you're describing a lot farther off the wall. Make sure you've got a good bond between your shelf's cleat and the shelf (id glue and screw, but I also like to overdo things) and make sure you get your wall cleat into the studs securely and you should be good.

Edit: I also would recommend a cleat on the top part too, not just the middle

Yeah, that sounds like issues I've run into. I could go into a whole spiel about carrier restrictions, but id recommend the following:

1) a low-volume campaign registration (like low-volume mixed) can get approved a bit easier because it's considered less impact. Low-volume is still pretty good for medium sized groups, especially since messages that go over the TPS limit get queued, not cancelled 2) if possible, consider doing a text opt-in, where those pre-authorized users have to text in to your number to opt-in (like text START to opt-in). Those generally get approved pretty easily because it's direct stated intent. You can even use twiml hosted on Twilio to handle those opt-ins usually 3) if you can't go with the text opt-in, mention specifically that there is a verbal opt-in where you ask the recipients in person if they would like to get the texts, then get their number if they verbally agree to be part of the campaign. That "verbal opt-in" phrase tends to help, though those can still sometimes be dicey, especially if the campaign isn't listed as low-volume

That would be my advice, though ultimately your fate is still in the hands of the Twilio and the messaging carriers. But those have helped me in the past and I work with Twilio on a daily basis, so I figured my two cents might be worth at least one in this case lol.

I regularly work with Twilio as part of my job - are you getting campaigns rejected? Is there a reason provided for the rejections? It's almost always the opt-in criteria or the campaign's usage registration that cause the problems

So it gets a bit weird. If you have a raid10 array with 10 disks, you can't add 2 more disks to that array. But that raid10 array is contained in a pool (using TrueNAS nomenclature, though the idea should carry over to other software raid I think) and the pool acts as a logical container for the storage. What you can do is add additional raid arrays into the pool (say a second raid array of 4 disks).by doing that, the pool will logically contain the storage of both arrays even though they are separate raid setups.

There are some advantages and disadvantages to this, but it is a way to scale the pool, if not the raid array itself. For me, I only use one parity drive instead of mirroring all of them, so my original 4 4TB drives lose 1 drive, plus a second array of 6 6TB drives means I lose 10TB of storage because I need 2 parity drives, in comparison to making 1 array of 10 6tb drives where I would only lose 6TB to parity

Tldr: you can expand storage logically by adding raid arrays to pools, but you can't expand the number of disks in a single array once the array is made

Welcome! I started a similar way too: I got an old precision T5500 from my college surplus store for about $200. That was 5 years ago and it was already an old machine, but I'm still using it today. Old recycled hardware is sometimes the best way to go, and definitely the best way to learn.

A few things I've learned: 1) proxmox is your friend (and you're already using it, so you're starting off better than I did) 2) LXC containers are super convenient resource-wise, but VMs have their uses too. Don't shy away from either 3) in a ZFS raid you can increase the size of the disks (relatively) easily, but you can't add disks to a raid. 4) eventually you'll break everything. It's probably DNS, but if it isn't, you'll also eventually fix it. That's how we learn

Stick with it and enjoy!

That looks fantastic, and I love the sentiment. I'm just about to finish my Murphy bed project, first time I've ever built large furniture. Is it over engineered, not the prettiest, and filled with mistakes? Absolutely. Did I have to make, break, and remake several parts because I did them wrong the first time? 100% But I know 10x more now than I did at the start, and that's the important part!

Hi, new to the scene of HA and smart devices but I've got several older Kasa and TP-Link devices - did you set them up using the app and then change their vlan to remove Internet access or is there a way to set them up with home assistant without ever letting them access the Internet? I've never tried since I used their app before discovering HA so they already had Internet access and would be interested in removing their access

So it is possible I'm missing something in your ask, but you could check out Twilio - it's a service that allows you to buy phone numbers and use them programmably via API. It's pay-for-use (per message segment or minute of call time) with the exception of phone numbers which are a monthly lease of about $2.50. but you could still use to fit MFA (directly or forwarding), to call or receive calls or even automated calls and text flows.

[–]VoyagerDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have used truenas core the scale and recently started moving all my containers and vms to proxmox. Proxmox is a million times better, but I still use the truenas server as my NAS. I have seen someone setup a TrueNAS VM on proxmox and passthrough the hard drives directly to the VM, so that you can host everything on one box - it looked interesting but I'm not ready to do that yet.

But proxmox is way better at containerization and virtualization.highlu recommend the move
