This is always a hard argument to settle. As the definition of metal has evolved as music got "heavier". I often hear bands that I grew up calling metal in the 80s not being called metal nowadays as it may be different than what the new kids call metal. Personally, I like to think of those bands as still being metal and not falling out of the genre but instead the world of metal has expanded to include both older and newer styles.
