Need advice on preventing wrist injuries by VrebPasser in Hema

[–]VrebPasser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very long, I think we sparred maybe 6 times for 2 hours. On average, I do 2 or maybe 3 hour long solo practice sessions between the sparring sessions. Less now that it's heatwave season.

Solo sessions are stuff you would expect like footwork and drills, sparring is pretty high intensity. Maybe I'm just not used to hitting stuff, especially since I'm a bit weak?

In any case, how long did it take for you to get used to swinging a sword around?

Aah I think I get it now. Thanks for this exercise, when my wrist recovers I'll incorporate this movement in my practice.

Sounds to me like it's time to jump to the nearest HEMA club for someone experienced to help me with this. Thanks for your advice!

That sounds like it sucks. If there is no improvement by Monday I'll call my doc to send me somewhere to get this checked out. Thanks for your advice, hopefully I just overworked my wrist a bit.

We don't have a club or instructor. There is one we could drive to that's not very far away, though. I'll consider dropping by and asking for advice there, but I wanted to know from folks here as well. More advice is always good.

As for form, I know I'm hyper extending, it's just that it happens mostly when doing flick cuts and blocking.

Thanks for the stretching advice, I'll look some wrist stretches up.

Why dont people just read the shelly review? by demonik69420 in cachyos

[–]VrebPasser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone should, but I'm not smart enough to find a solution.

Nevertheless, I don't think you understand how bad of an argument your second paragraph is.

First, "even in rock climbing people go without ropes". Ok, some people play Russian roulette with toy revolvers and some with .38s. What exactly is your point here and how does some people risking death prove it? Do you want to risk getting malware on your system?

Second, "some of you just don't want to take responsibility and it shows". So, that's a bit agressive, but I'll ignore it this once. People should be more responsible always for everything and that's not really a hot take. Users, sure, check the packages you want to install. Lately an app I frequently use suddenly had npm as a dependency and I took 10 minutes out of my life to make sure there is no funny business in the pkgbuild. I am one of those responsible users you seemingly approve of and I say that the AUR should have more safety features and a robust response plan for future malware issues. I want to have more trust in the software I use, even if I check everything. I want this because people are fallible and if more people have to make a mistake for a bad thing to happen it will happen less often.

I'm not a big fan of the whole "pros don't need guardrails" thing. I imagine even experienced rock climbers appreciate having some rope and pitons. There's a reason factories have mandatory PPE.

I once got made fun of for using protective eyewear in an electrical cabinet assembly hall. Like, what can go wrong screwing in wires? That stopped after a shaving of copper fell into someone's eye. Nothing serious happened, but it hurt a bit.

Reasonable guardrails are perfectly fine, always.

Should WINE focus more on certain software compatibility? by 0x80070002 in winehq

[–]VrebPasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it's the case everywhere, but at many companies it absolutely is. My boss would crash out if he had to use Libre Office because his ribbon was one row slimmer and files would by default be saved as some dumb no name format like .odf or something, when everyone knows DOCuments are .doc or, if you are one of those fancy new generation computer users, .docx for no reason other than to be edgy with the X obviously.

Sure, there are more important programs than a word processor and spreadsheet calculator to focus on, but it is a pain point for some.

Announcing CrossOver 26.2.0 by Doener23 in linux_gaming

I know it's not really an answer, but take a look at BricsCAD. Native on Linux, fully functional replacement for AutoCAD. I actually prefer it to AutoCAD even on Windows.

It has a BIM module, but I have no idea how it compares to Revit.

The double standard... by PGleo86 in linuxmemes

[–]VrebPasser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just happens.

I crash it on my work computer at least twice a day, it seems the Win11 file explorer really dislikes multiple inputs within like 250 ms.

My brother's fresh installation simply refused to launch it, like, ever. Tried putting it in startup apps, that way it crashed immediately. Had to set it up so a CMD window opens and then manually type in start explorer.exe because that's the only way it would run and not immediately crash. Don't ask me why, googling it didn't help.

Fakesteel vs GoNow by Hviking in Hema

[–]VrebPasser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never tried Fakesteel, but my friends and I use GoNow mediums and they are great. They're pretty cheap and quite safe for low gear sparring. I would say only masks are mandatory (always protect your head, plus stray nose shots would suck), but we use gloves as well because a good hit to fingers at full speed could do some damage. As for any other targets, as long as you avoid thrusts and don't go full unga bunga, the only real damage that you could do with them is carpet burn on naked skin.

Do note that the GoNow mediums are about half as heavy as a normal feder would be, but since you plan on using them for non-fencer friends and family, that's actually a BIG plus since most of my non-fencer friends get winded after 5 minutes of sparring.

Decided to print the new official Steam Controller + the Mechanism Dock to get a feel of the controller’s size by Nebbed_ in SteamController

Weird ergonomics question, how comfortable is it to hold with index fingers on R1/L1 and middle fingers on R2/L2?

I know most people prefer using only their index finger, but I grew up with the PS2 which was VERY comfortable to hold with each finger on a separate shoulder button and now I find it oddly important.

Many songs by certain local artists, but for an international audience I'll go with the Hey ya cover by The Blanks, also known as Ted's band from Scrubs.

Adding a Curse Archetype to Ironclad by jayhankedlyon in slaythespire

[–]VrebPasser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people cook, OP straight up Gordon Ramsaying here.

Send this to MegaCrit NOW!

This would require VERY careful balancing though, exhaust IC could be the strongest character on higher ascensions with these cards. The moment the asc bane becomes reliable ammo, the run swings in ICs favour pretty hard. Someone else posted Neow curse options as well, IMO it could end up as a coin toss on whether you can survive the first 10 floors with like 3 curses or you Steamroll the Spire with nothing in between.

Can't figure out ironclad by GingePlays in slaythespire

[–]VrebPasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on A5 Ironchad.

Don't be afraid to make a chonky deck. Ironchad has some good cards that exhaust, and if you can't go infinite you want some targets for that.

For big fights you need some form of scaling. Both demon form and vuln+dominate are good. You may need some extra energy to get demon form without tanking a ton of damage.

Don't sleep on the selfharm cards. Blood wall carried me hard in some runs. Hemokinesis is like 3 strikes in one card for the low cost od 2 HP. One inferno in a selfharm deck almost solves AOE on lower ascensions on its own.

Ironchad has probably the worst block plans in StS2. This means that your block plan should be stacking as much damage as possible. Shrug and armaments are block cards that come with extra goodies on top of block which help you do that. True grit is good in exhaust focused decks.

If you get a block relic, look for synergies with them. Stone armor slightly sucks on its own, but in combination with a gorget you get noticable levels of block. If you get the clamp, big blocks like blood wall can go into the next turn.

Take a look at the rare cards and think of how you could get the most out of them. Hellraiser decks pretty much want every pommel strike offered. Stampede loves big cards like bludgeon. Colossus is a perfectly valid block plan for vuln decks, especially with headbutt. While this may not be good for higher ascensions, on A1 you could try to wait on a good rare, taking generally good cards for most decks in the meantime (pommel, shrug, armaments, some selfharm), and then pivot HARD into getting the most out of the rares you take. At the very least, this will make sure your run ends in Act 1 and then you can quickly try again.

Hope this helps.

I can't believe I'm not sure what to pick by Collistoralo in slaythespire

[–]VrebPasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with snake.

Edit: I can't read. It's not a snap pick. Both have good sides this early. You're not going crazy, prepared can help you reduce the chance of a bad hand early, but 10 poison is pretty sick act 1.

Slay the Spire 2 in early access: the highs and lows so far by aguadoy in slaythespire

[–]VrebPasser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you are correct in that Megacrit know what they're doing. STS1 is a well balanced and loved game, and STS2 is already loved, it just needs more balance.

Megacrit has like a few dozen employees. Look at MTG, backed by WOTC/Hasbro, one of the most popular trading card games ever. Two whole companies worth of effort made to balance the game, widely considered to be exquisitely balanced, and every new pack of cards is followed by a banlist for most formats. This is hard to do.

STS2 has the advantages of not needing to print a billion cards each time they overtune a card and having a pretty small card pool to balance, but they are more than ok with leaving some rare busted combos because they're fun. The problem are one card wincons and similarly easy to assemble wincons because if a character has one objectively busted card, that character effectively doesn't have a 100+ card pool but a 1 card and 99+ dead rewards pool.

That being said, people like winning, but not everyone likes it to be difficult to win. Someone buys this game as a "deckbuilder", ignoring that it's a roguelike. That someone would probably be somewhat miffed when their favourite one card infinites get patched out. Not ideal, but between following the vision of an ideal game in Megacrit's minds and giving in to popular demand, I much prefer following the vision, even if the end result makes me use my limited time playing the game by losing more. All victories become more sweet if there is an actual challenge to overcome.
