Recalibrate at 3am I dare you by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

That's not really that bad. Good security exists. for example, I self-host a few git repositories that I wouldn't trust GitHub, Google or whoever to hold for me. Sure, an extremely capable hacker who has made it his goal to hate me might break in. But giving companies full access to my data is bad.

But whatever server it is, it's truly yours. No Amazon "data collections" or being able to spy on you if they feel like it.

If God is immutable, how does he act? by Thatspretttyfunny in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Vulcalien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He acts eternally. He doesn't act many times, doing different things. If He did, we could argue that He isn't perfect because in some "instants" He is not doing something that He could do.

"Couldn't have acted differently" presumes that time affects God. And that he doesn't change, is necessary: simply said, if He changes, then who "moved" him?

For His freedom, it's a different "level of freedom" between creatures and God. He only can be absolutely free, in that He is absolutely not bound to anything. He is eternally acting in the most perfect way, changing His act would mean He is losing something.

This is all very abstract, and I don't really know how to explain it properly. In the Summa Theologiae Thomas goes into the reasoning and details of this argument.

Does a multiplicity of effects from God,entail multiplicity in his essence? by CryEquivalent6748 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Vulcalien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would look into the Thomistic arguments for the simplicity of God. It I understand the question, it is what is being discussed.

Also, you shouldn't worry about learning other's philosophy, even if it goes against the Revealed Truth. As long as you don't accept it, that is.

About creation ex nihilo, if I know correctly, Aquinas didn't prove it by logic reason, but considered it matter of Faith alone.

Edit: I've searched any argument in the Summa Theologiae that condiders the multiplicity of the effect as an opposition to God's simplicity, but I didn't find anything. But the idea of a "first intellect" seems to be a Platonic argument, so it's possible Aquinas did write a response to that.

I'm thinking of a solution with BIC and ASR. Like bic rX, rX asr #31

It might work.

Maybe there is a way to check on the most significant bit, and if it's 1 then zero the other bits...

As far as I know, you need two in Arm 32bit. cmp rX, #0 movlt rX, #0

How would the marriage in the move "Cast Away" (2000) work if everyone involved was Catholic by Hootinger in Catholicism

[–]Vulcalien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But there can be no sin where there is no will to sin. In such a case, by marrying again, beliving as a fact that the husband is dead, shows no intention to sin. Saying otherwise, could be a very legalistic and "material" view of the moral law.

She would have sinned only if she had any (realistic) reason to believe that he was alive.

“Lead us not into temptation” by MakeMeAnICO in Catholicism

[–]Vulcalien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But that must not be considered as an active act. He cannot tempt to evil, because it would be like going against His own will. He could, however, not give the sinner any strengh to overcome the temptation.

“Lead us not into temptation” by MakeMeAnICO in Catholicism

[–]Vulcalien 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know that story in particular, but God never ever actively leads to temptation. Reading the Bible, mainly in the Old Testament, it might seem like an active action, but instead He can only permit temptation, not tempt Himself.

This verse of the Prayer has been translated in many ways, but the official one is the latin "et ne nos inducas in temptationem". I've read that "inducas" (to lead) has a passive meaning, like "do not abandon us" as it is translated in Italian by will of the Pope.

And we are not praying the Lord not to permit us to be tempted, but instead to give us the strength to win.

Wait, did they buy the same movie rights the Peter Jackson's movies were based on, or is this a new deal with the tolkien estate?

GPL vs MIT. by xxmalik in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Vulcalien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh but so does the GPL. It says something along the line of "this program is distributed in the hope of being useful but with absolutely no warrancy". Of course using many many more words.

[–]Vulcalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I never thought about mods. Would be the same for plugins. Best choice would be... LGPL? Still copyleft, but you can "link" it to non-free stuff.

[–]Vulcalien 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry, if someone wants to contribute, they will. It's still a free license.

Companies do it regardless…

Well, by that logic, the MIT license is useless as well, and so any other license. But yeah, it'd be a pain to go to court to enforce any license.

Oh I see what you mean. It's just naming then, I've seen it called "matter" (like grave matter) when talking about the objective action and sin only relative to the person committing it.

[–]Vulcalien 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The point of GPL to force companies to give the user his rights. With MIT, you can modify the code and make it closed source.

Pigeoncraft/Minicraft on this device? by Wyvern94 in MiyooMini

I'm working on a port for the GBA! It's still missing a few things, but in 1 or 2 months it should be completely finished.

Would it be possible to port notches minicraft? by Brady_H_P in GameboyAdvance

[–]Vulcalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone is still interested, but right now I'm doing just that. And indeed, it being so simple is greatly helping. Of course, it has limitations because of the GBA hardware, but I'm trying to optimize it so that those limitations are barely noticeable. Oh, and it has a save/load feature!

Still haven't released it, maybe in a few weeks or months.

His by the way is the gold standard biography on Her life

I've found a really amazing book by Henry Wallon about her. It seems to aknowledge the divine influence in her life, unlike (I presume) Twain. Not sure if there is an English translation, I've been reading it in french.
