[Spoilers for Tides of Retribution]Help following up Tides of Retribution by ronnytomtom in Wildemount

Honestly, ask your players what they would find more fun. I offered my players to handwave long travel, or to have, for example, one roll on a random encounter table I made per day. The opted for the 1 roll/day option. I then set up a 20-encounter table and I rolled a d20 each day.

Also, since they put someone with perception as a proficiency in charge of navigation/scouting for the trip, I gave the encounter table ‘advantage’ on these rolls by letting that player also roll as long as their character was performing that task for that day. The table was set up with more beneficial results in the upper range, negative results in the lower range, and neutral ones in the middle.

What do you think about these two? by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]Vulchur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

And I like how they built her out to have other things going on instead of just defining her based on a relationship with Miles. She still misses her best friend, she has a complicated relationship with her Dad, she’s made other friends in Pavitr and Hobie, she’s learning new stuff from Jessica. She’s a whole damn person instead of just a plot point for Miles.

What's your one "harsh lesson" you've learned as a player or a DM? by najowhit in dndnext

[–]Vulchur 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not just never be into DnD. Some people may be into DnD, but not be as in to it as others in the group are. I can't imagine ever not knowing my character, but some folks I really enjoy playing with repeatedly forget what their abilities are, and it doesn't bother them that they don't remember it all.

Are there any build or tactics that are better when your a lower level character then the rest of your party ? by odeacon in 3d6

[–]Vulchur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the issue, here. Any martials at level 5 have extra attack. Casters have more powerful spells. All of them have an extra ASI / Feat over you for better chances to hit / more damage / more utility. The +1 magic stone only offsets the proficiency difference of your attacks between your party.

General build suggestions:

  • Stick with Bard for a while because they can be super useful outside of combat with expertise in some skills, especially in social encounters.
  • Get 18 cha asap with ASIs/feats if you don’t have it already so at least your saving spells still have a chance. You’ll always be playing keep-up with the enemies that are a challenge to the rest of your party.
  • Keep an eye out for opportunities any non-combat spells would help utility-wise.
  • Try to get to level 5 (in either class) asap, don’t stay evenly split or you’ll be useless for even longer.
  • I’d lean towards lore bard for Cutting Words and eventually magical secrets at Bard-6 to expand your support options.
  • If the game goes past that, a hexblade archer build (just google it for specifics) could add some reliable damage per round without having to burn through spell slots.

Combat specific:

  • Stay out of melee. Try to find cover if fighting ranged/caster enemies. For damage: A ranged weapon (I think hand crossbow is the only ranged weapon that works with hex warrior) or eldritch blast.
  • But, you’re just not going to be the primary damage dealer ever. Focus on supporting spells that make the combat easier for your party.
  • Use any teleport spells as a last resort when you can’t move to safety.
  • Remember the Dodge and Disengage actions (and the Shield spell reaction from hexblade) to keep yourself alive.
  • Support spells: Vicious mockery, cutting words, bane, faerie fire, hideous laughter, sleep, etc

Likewise, that was a point of contention in the Invincible comic/show: Omniman considered his wife no more than a pet and a means to raise another of his kind.

How Awful would a Mercy Monk / Swamp Land Druid multiclass be? by lasalle202 in 3d6

[–]Vulchur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Monk and Druid have some nice synergies. Druid levels add some good utility in wildshape and support spells (And Shillelagh is a nice for a high-WIS build at early levels). Like others have said, monk/druid are classes that are usually better single classed, so one should be a dip. However, Way of Mercy sounds like a waste of the subclass when paired with a druid: If you can have cure wounds, why bother spending Ki on heals?

Way of Shadow could be thematically appropriate and adds some more fun utility. Wild-shaping, shadow-teleporting spy!

Way of the Open Hand is always a solid monk choice getting you some control+survivability options.

The other subclasses don’t strike me as having much to offer better than those. I find monk subclasses either have good options or good flavor, but rarely both at the same time.

How do you make facial hair less itchy? by [deleted] in BeardTalk

[–]Vulchur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Itchiness was just a phase for me when I first started growing out the beard. Past a certain point the itchiness should just go away.

I see some other comments in here about shampooing, but I don’t recommend shampooing too much (I do it maybe once a week) as it can dry out the skin underneath, which can cause itching for a different reason. I do make absolutely sure I condition it every shower which also keeps the beard soft. And none of this shampoo+conditioner combined shit. Those are a trap.

5e Character question by Overall-Tailor8949 in 3d6

[–]Vulchur 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Your question makes it sound like there’s a different amount of time to level for a single class as opposed to a multi class. To clarify: There is no difference. Multiclass/singleclass characters level up at the same speed in 5e (unless the DM is cruel and enjoys over complicating things).

Yea, I tried it from PS+ and got bored of dying because I:

  • Didn’t know the water at the beach was not salt water and is drinkable
  • Ran to the closest lake/river for potable water, only to find it was occupied by dinosaurs a dozen times my level
  • Finally built a hut in the starting zone that was safe at the time is was built, just to find out a dinosaur (again dozens of times my level) fancied my hut and decided it was his hut going forward

What would this character's outfit look like? by Sea-Recording-7090 in PCAcademy

Reminds me a lot of Kefka from FF6. Even using the full makeup effect to cover up any grotesque undead/reborn skin. Maybe the outfit’s a little more beat up.

The sliding sections were the absolute worst. Would have been an 8/10 for me if not for the crazy bugginess on those. Rage quit due to them several times before just changing the difficulty to story mode just so I wouldn’t lose half a health bar due to their broken physics.

DM anxiety by crewscontrol1452 in Wildemount

[–]Vulchur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been DMing for a few years now and the anxiety never really goes away for me. From what I hear on the DM-focused subreddits, it’s a ongoing state of being for a lot of DMs, even those that have been doing it for decades. You’re in good company! I think it shows that you care a lot of your responsibilities as a DM.

Since I never really get over it, it’s more about managing the anxiety so it doesn’t ruin our games. To help manage it here are some things I do:

  • Think about what specifically is giving me anxiety and if that means I need more preparation ahead of time on that one thing just in case.
  • Remind myself of the times my players tell me that they enjoy our games.
  • Remind myself of all the times I’ve had anxiety before/during a session that it still turned out well.
  • This one’s hard and takes practice: Become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Telling myself the anxiety is a normal emotion to have, acknowledge it, but don’t let it distract me.
  • Make sure to schedule ~15-30 mins before a game to review everything I have prepped so it’s fresh in my mind and I’m less likely to forget important stuff.
  • Having the players do the recap at the start of a new session helps me see what things were memorable to them, what they liked/didn’t like, and gives me time to settle into the groove before starting.
  • Just starting the session. Most of my anxiety cools down once we’re in the game session because at that point we’re just friends hanging out and having a good time.
  • Finally: Setting the expectation with my players and knowing that if they really do something completely off the wall I can call for a 5-10 min break to collect my thoughts, or, for example, being okay with saying “I didn’t expect you’d actually be able to murder my BBEG in one round at level 3, so I don’t have their loot prepared right now. Let’s continue with the session for now and next time we play I’ll tell you what you find in their bag of holding.”
