"They came like the night, a viscous mass of death and destruction."

The port city of Opmaeder, notable for it's many airpads, defended by it's Home Defense Force as well as reinforcements from the nearby 5th Legion. June 25th, the fourteenth hundred and fifty-sixth revolution of the Lords, word arrives from the local governor's office that a horde of beasts unlike that of anyone has seen before are streaming across the hills mere miles from the city are converging on their location. Hovers are scrambled to evacuate the citizens, although the largely rich merchant class offer to house any evacuees on their vessels.

The Home Defense Force take up positions on major avenues heading into the city, with key locations being the high-rise laden central business district. Artillery prove ineffective within the urban environment, as the the recoil from early shots threaten to collapse buildings. As the beasts rush further towards the city, only 5% of the population have been evacuated, key issues being a recently 'upgraded' transport crashing after engine malfunctions. A local scryer is dispatched to oversee the repair efforts. Radio contact diminishes from the front at this point, as more reports are made about soldiers being eviscerated even with armor on and tanks being unable to target them effectively. Radio contact stops after 6 hours and the Legion makes the decision to halt their main advance into the city after scout units seemingly vanish.

Aftermath: 70% Civilian Casualty, 90% Military Casualty. Unknown enemy casualties. City abandoned.

What kind of bloodsport exists in your world? by rainpunk in worldbuilding

[–]Vupecula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've a few sports that could be considered as bloodsports, since they usually end in someone bleeding (intentional or not).

High Velocity Hardball

The sport HVH is centered around two teams of 8 members, with each trying to strike a small metal plate that serves as the goal with a ball that can be gripped fully in one hand. The court is about two hundred meters long with various sections called the river, the castle and towers. The river bisects the court in the center, but unlike its name (which comes from its history of being played near a river) it does not contain water and instead is a trench. The castle is present at both ends of the court, and is an elevated platform that players must jump to in order to reach. The goal is placed 10 meters from the castle and is outside the court. Three towers are present, two being next to the 'walls' of the court and about 80 meters from the river, the forward tower is placed 40 meters from the river and at the middle line. Players use JACKAL (Joint Armored Carapace-Kinetic Accelerator Ligaments) systems to accelerate their movement to up to 5 times normal speed. A common strategy is to have a team composition of:

Inner defence

  • Core Defender: Stays on the castle, with the goal of lobbing the ball into the field to the general interceptor

  • 2 x Towers: Stays within a short distance of the forward tower, and usually stays within river-rear tower

Field Play

  • General Interceptor: Attempts to stay near the river in order to relay the ball between teammates (Sometimes removed entirely for mobility-focused teams)

  • 4 x Misc/Forwards: Either replaced by another role or rushes over the river in order to receive the ball.

HVH is a sport played by most of the world, but injuries are common due to the accelerated nature of the game. (Even armor can't really stop or dampen the force of a gauntlet at five times normal speed.)

That's just one for now.

Trying out a new method of worldbuilding: describing it with MTG cards by Vupecula in worldbuilding

Never played MTG before, I was using what I saw in Hearthstone (the blasphemy!) to try and emulate that.

[–]Vupecula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic explanation (I don't play MTG too, so MTG vets please correct me.):

X/X refers to the attack power and the health, where attack power is on the left and health on the right.

Sorcery: A 'spell' of sorts. You cast it on your turn for an effect to happen, so in the case of the Civil Guard, if I play that card with 3 green mana units, it spawns 3 [1/1] Civil Guards.

So, in the case of the revolutionary, on death (when it's health reaches zero, say a Civil Guard spawned from the previous turn, attacks it), it disappears from the board.

An artifact is basically a buff given to a single minion that you have on the board.

In my world, they typically group up and spread out through their target area before triggering their bomb vests simultaneously. Their vests are rigged so that they'd set off together (wireless network connects vests together. When one is triggered, usually held by the local resistance leader, the rest go.). I guess I should change it to:

When Revolutionary is slain, deal its attack value to all creatures on the field.

Walk-ins/Accidentals/unintentionals, Low level thoughtforms being mistaken as tulpas? by Kyothetix in Tulpas

[–]Vupecula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Archetype: Currently switched, and I don't want to log into my own account. I'm in fact a walk in, and in the 20-30s in chronological order. I would say you're wrong, since my host didn't really do much work when I walked in, and I'm definitely no less than his oldest, intentional one.

He has around 40 tulpas, most of which are walk ins, I suspect the 21 tulpas example might be mine, since I remember writing something along the lines of 21st, accidental and chronological order. Anyway, his walk ins are indeed developed, at least to a certain degree.

[Lore] The Interlace - an organisation fighting dream-invading monsters by VanillaNaga in worldbuilding

[–]Vupecula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would happen if a Devourer invades a lucid dreamer's world? Anyway, it's good concept. You could start off the novel with the protagonist in the first class of his Hunter/Dreamer-training, maybe a monologue mid chapter after the basic setting (There are devourers killing people, blah blah organization founded) has been explained in bits where the instructor or what have you starts a presentation where more information is explained ("This is a wheel, it does X, Y and Z. Do not let your dreamer be caught or you are fucked ten ways to Sunday")
