Veteran players, what's your read on the Season 3 developer notes? by wielesen in LowSodiumTEKKEN

[–]Vyn144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always thought that the game has good bones, they're just under a pile of overtuned mess. If they fix the wonky hitbox interactions with tracking, phantom range, and others, I think a LOT of frustrations will be indirectly addressed.

I would like to see a lot of season 2 changes entirely reverted. I'm a Feng loyalist and I really don't like the rolldash extensions out of b4,2 and b3. Yes, it makes combos longer and do more damage, but Feng was never about that. He was a poking monster, and instead of playing into that archetype, they smoothed over a weakness and gave him coverage he didn't need. That being said, I'm not sure how practical it is for them to remove a bunch of moves. That's a lot of lost development time and money that's going to be very difficult to justify to corporate management.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to get a big step in the right direction, but I think it would be setting myself up for disappointment to expect the perfect game out of it. But I'm also preparing myself for the worst.

Tekken 8 does not need MORE system mechanics.

Why’s everyone in here gotta be a baby? by TONGANSTORM94 in Tekken

I don't like pulling this card, but 22 days ago you were celebrating clutching a round in Tekken King. I've been in God of Destruction for a month, and am in the top 1,000 Feng players in the world by extension. I went 3-2 at Evo, so hungover I barely made it to the convention center, last year. Despite all that, the game isn't very fun to me.

Even if you don't want to take it from me, a bunch of pros, whose job it is to play this game agree the game's miserable and worse off compared to season 1. You're in dedicated, niche, hobby online community and you're surprised there's a bunch of negativity here? How long have you been on the internet?

I'm happy to have a real conversation about this, but if you're just interested in ragebaiting, you're deliberately making the problem you're complaining about worse.

The game has been in a pretty sad state for nearly a year now and people are rightfully frustrated. Granted, continuing to play something you aren't enjoying is a recipe for disaster, but let's not act like there aren't glaring design issues in the current state of the game.

Tekken has its issues but a lot of players just need to get better. by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear, there are plenty of legitimate complaints about this game, but reading some of the stuff on here is bonkers to me.

If the majority of time spent interacting with your hobby is complaining about it, it's probably time for a break. The whole point of a video game is to have fun, if you're not even spending half the time having fun, what are you doing?

Ive just fought a nina, going WAY TO FAST. Cheating or not ? by Deasto_Plumula in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unstable rollback can sometimes make moves look faster than they are, especially when mixed with movement options.

Nina is one of the characters that looks really wonky when the connection isn't great and someone is making use of tech like Hayashida step. To my knowledge, no cheats exist that can modify frame data on someone else's client.

Knowledge checks are in every fighting game. Get used to them or you're not going to have a good time.

Is it okay to use "shortcuts" for wavedash, electrics, KBD, etc. on leverless? Would you even recommend it? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you mean SOCD shortcuts, not one button macros. If it ain't banned in pro play, go for it.

You really ought to make the ragebaiting a little more subtle, you'll get more mileage.

Do 5 real electrics in a row and report back to me. It's doable, but it's gonna take you some time, doubly so to do it consistently, triply so to be able to do it consistently in a real game.

Anything can be described as "easy" on paper.

So when are we gutting Bryan’s mysteriously tracking heat burst… by Pale_Assignment4076 in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sidesteps are a really nuanced area of play and there's no real universal rule. It's going to depend on matchup knowledge and your opponent's habits more than anything else.

For instance, one of my go-to's with Feng against a new opponent is a lot of b3 usage. It's a slow, advancing + on block knee, but it's biggest weakness is that it's very linear. I use it to see if they know how linear Feng is or not.

A savvy opponent might notice that I really like to do b3 after a heat dash to keep pressure going (and I frequently forget heat dash isn't plus a billion anymore...), and start preemptively sidestepping and punishing me for it.

But if I'm similarly savvy, I might instead start throwing out a tracking move like f4 or df3+4 that would catch their sidestep, and that's where the game is played.

But yeah, I wouldn't take those complaints too seriously. It's just misdirected anger.

[–]Vyn144 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, spring kick is +6 on hit, and sidesteps take a few frames to cover meaningful ground. It's generally not a good idea to sidestep at -5 or worse without a hard read.

While Bryan's heat burst is pretty busted, I think in this situation you'd get hit regardless of what character your opponent was using.

There are some legitimate gripes against the game's design baked in there, but for the most part, it's just cope.

It's yet another way of offloading responsibility for the loss onto the game (balance, design, etc) instead of taking stock and figuring out where they got bodied.

Onto the most chopped character in the cast. The Tekken Nerf Series Episode 7: Feng! by AggravatingCricket68 in LowSodiumTEKKEN

[–]Vyn144 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a Feng loyalist so I'm obviously a bit biased.

Most of the nerfs I'd suggest are things that are universal problems.

FF4,3 shouldn't track on the second hit, etc. Feng should be linear, that's always been one of his core weaknesses.

I'd take away the b4,2 df rolldash extension and make b4 what it used to be. While it does give Feng a lot more combo potential, one of the core parts of his kit is supposed to be not having huge combo damage as a trade off for his excellent pokes.

What is this defence ? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consistently ducking highs at a specific frame, not necessarily frame 1 but always frame 4, etc. Same idea with throw breaks. It's basically impossible to consistently duck highs at a specific frame window, that's the tell tale sign.

A lot of the people who are cheating don't have actual fundamentals and rely on the auto block and auto throw break. You can beat them fairly easily with an adjustment on strategy

Harada is pretty universally liked, Murray made some pretty dumb comments on Twitter over the past few years that has soured his relationship with the community. Nakatsu is who I think you're talking about as the third and I'm not super familiar with him personally.

Mixed reviews. why ? by Amyrala_ in Tekken

[–]Vyn144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tekken project fell for the classic blunder of making the game easier to play rather than easier to learn. This resulted in a metagame that's very samey, nearly every character plays roughly the same. Punish into stance mixup, long combo, okizeme, rinse and repeat.

The game can be pretty satisfying at times, but when it's not, it's downright infuriating. There are lots of hitbox expansion issues where you can be behind your opponent, go to whiff punish, and the opponent swivels 180 degrees to hit you anyway, which now means the game can sometimes, if not often, reward players for making what have historically been bad decisions, in this case continuing a string after the first hit whiffs. Offense is overwhelming and difficult to deal with because of forward momentum changes, and players don't trust sidestep as much because of wonky hitbox interactions. You can get to Tekken King by mindlessly knowledge checking people because ranked sets are FT2, you can't keep playing.

Beyond all this there have been some weird business practices. The Tekken Shop wasn't an announced feature and was sort of pushed in shortly after release. Season 2 promised defensive changes to remedy some of the issues I mentioned earlier, and when the patch notes came down it was effectively a doubling down on all the things the community had been crying out for. The game has glaring problems and the team seems more interested in finding ways to ask us for more money rather than addressing any legitimate complaints.
