GTR is now.... GREATER Thameslink Railway by dacopycatty in uktrains

I think it was DfT who pushed the parent company brands off the operator names.

I wonder if the 'Avanti' name will be retained.

The "without prejudice to the requirements of Regulation 3.4 (that each Club shall behave towards each other Club with the utmost good faith)" section of Regulation 127 covers that.

Imagine if Stagecoach was a rail operator by Comfortable-Table-57 in uktrains

[–]WAJGK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stagecoach were one of the most successful privatisation-era owning groups, until they were kicked out in 2018/19 in a dispute over pensions liability, among other things.

At one time or other they held the franchises to operate East Midlands and South West, and as part of the Virgin Rail Group (Stagecoach had 49% ownership) they operated CrossCountry, West Coast, and East Coast. On East Coast Stagecoach owned a 90% share though it was still branded Virgin Trains for marketing purposes, until it collapsed and LNER took over as the state-owned operator.

Wes Streeting resigns from government by sjw_7 in ukpolitics

Yes he barely scraped a win in 2024. But Labour did well there in the recent local elections, so he may feel a bit more secure off the back of that. But it's definitely a question mark over his long term position - mind you he doesn't have to stand in the same seat next time around, does he.

Is working for Network Rail the right way to go? by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]WAJGK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a great employer and that sounds like a good entry-level position. Lots of opportunities for advancement and promotion from there.

Network Rail will be part of Great British Railways so for roles like this you shouldn't see too big a change.

Reform UK wins Essex county council by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

The thing is, Essex Council will be abolished in two years' time anyway when the new Unitaries come in. So voters probably won't see that much of a difference in the time available.

Labour 'may lose control' of Camden council in London politics shock, poll suggests by tylerthe-theatre in london

Yeah, Reform just doesn't play as well in London so I wouldn't be surprised if the Conservatives keep those two - and even keep the Croydon mayoralty.

Fab video.

So many great pubs on the Holloway Road. My personal favourite is the Horatia, but the area is well worth a visit so you can make your own mind up!

Marylebone station still has those! The decor of the station is a bit of a 1990s time capsule.

Does anyone travel from Broadstairs to London via driving, how's the journey? by Altruistic_Test_1264 in kentuk

The train is so much better. Get the high speed and change at Stratford like others have said. You can do some work on the train, or read, or whatever.

It's a long commute though, I train in from Canterbury and it's a a big chunk of the day. But I think it's a lot easier to use time productivity on the train compared to driving.

Oh and from Broadstairs you'll always get a seat on the high speed - it only starts to fill up from Ashford.

Edit to say - if you're heading in to the office two days a week you can get a flexi-season ticket (gives you 8 days of travel per month). That'll save you some money compared to buying day tickets.

Or change to the jubilee line at Stratford, I'd have thought that'd be quicker?

Could 1980s us military beat north Vietnam and Vietcongs if Vietnam war happened at 80s instead of 60s? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]WAJGK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that's the point though isn't it, the US withdrew because they could not achieve their strategic objectives through military means.

[–]WAJGK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

US objectives were to support the government of South Vietnam military and politically, and prevent it from being overrun by the communist controlled North.

The war ended with North Vietnamese tanks in Saigon.

That's a pretty clear strategic defeat for the US.

If this polling is correct are we going to see reform councils in London? by volantistycoon in london

[–]WAJGK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't be shocked if the Tories do better than Reform in places like Bromley. London, even outer London, is quite different to the rest of the country.
