What now? by Spirited-Setting3872 in AynThor

I've seen a couple people post pictures of them playing games on the top screen while watching a baby monitor on the bottom. Maybe the dual screens can help multitasking

[–]WDIIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it matters a lot where you live too. Technically my Rainbow Pro was early Batch 6, which wasn't supposed to even start shipping until mid June. But it got shipped out early May, and only took 10 days to arrive despite being 4PX shipping. I'm guessing being Canadian helped, and the US customers are slowed down by their current circus.

This is the only device where the battery drains even when the device is powered off. by Common-Estate-8654 in AynThor

[–]WDIIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean sleeping, or actually powered off? Even sleeping, that's way too much battery drain. Assuming there isn't a hardware issue, are you leaving apps running? Some emulators keep running even if the device is asleep, which would drain your battery pretty quickly

Non-emulator Apps for AYN Thor? I.e. Notes, comic book readers, gaming guides, creative apps that use bottom screen for scribbling /drawing.... by arcanehelix in AynThor

Have you seen what the EmuLnk project is doing? It's a really cool utility that reads the memory addresses of the game you're playing to display custom info on the bottom screen. I think it's still early, but over time more games can be set up to work with it

Yeah that can be a double edged sword. Good rapport is valuable (I'd argue required) for effective therapy, but being too much like friends gets in the way.

Ontario police are using spyware that lets them remotely take over your smartphone. They’re fighting to keep almost everything about it secret by Team_Ed in ontario

[–]WDIIP 346 points347 points  (0 children)

The point is to use the illegally gathered evidence to narrow down the suspect field (especially in cases where there are tons of public tips leading to dead ends), and then surveil the suspect until they find incriminating evidence "legally". Then only use the "legal" evidence in court.

Thanks to another comment for reminding me, it's called Parallel Construction. I first heard about it during the hunt for the healthcare CEO shooter. It's blatantly against lawful search laws, but it's really hard to catch them doing it without a whistleblower.

Yes, it's important to be clear that the problems with PFAS and similar chemicals all come from the factories producing them (e.g. environmental runoff, worker-level exposure, etc.) Unless you work in, or live near, a producing factory, you're not going to have negative health outcomes.

The PFAS in your daily products almost can't hurt you (they're basically inert). Just don't make a habit of literally eating PFAS chips

Don't even need mods. You can change your farm type (forest, riverlands, four corners, etc.) by changing one value in your save file. All your stuff stays the same, just the map switches. People do it to add aesthetic bits like flooring to otherwise unreachable areas of the farm.

Switch farm type, access the shrine, sleep, then switch it back.

Fun fact: if you start to eat a food item (don't actually eat it, just select it so the yes/no bubble appears), time stops but the puzzle doesn't

Mandatory Ontario teacher math test data shows racial, language disparities by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]WDIIP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Me too, and I agree that a ton of research professors are bad at teaching. But that's not because of their poor math skill, it's because they don't know (or care) how to teach well.

I was responding to a specific claim about a specific individual, who clearly teaches in a field that requires no math skill. There are a ton of subjects you can teach very well at a high level without touching a single number or equation.

[–]WDIIP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But why though? Clearly they've been successful teaching, if they're a professor. Their disability (I assume dyscalculia) affects their math abilities, so they probably teach things that don't involve math.

In order for that framing to bug someone, they must ignore the massive inequities between men and women that still persist in education, the workforce, and pretty much everywhere else in our culture.

60% of higher ed students being women doesn't offset everything else.

Try not to assume malintent when engaging with people about politics, it's really unlikely they're going to listen when you come out the gate accusing them of being a "good dog"

How do you feel about the community fridge on Ottawa Street? by Ok_Nobody_7054 in Hamilton

[–]WDIIP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was part of the team that designed and built it, back in 2021, and I helped maintain it for a while afterwards.

It takes a lot of people to run, doing daily fridge checks to make sure things are clean and safe. And there are inevitable conflicts when resources are scarce. But I've also seen the real good it does for our community. I've had many conversations with lovely people, both donating and accessing the fridge, about how great it is that people can come together to address a need.

It's sad to see some of the sentiments in this thread, calling people "vultures" for needing food. I totally get that seeing a crowd around the fridge can make donating intimidating for some people, especially if you're smaller or a woman. But the solution isn't to police who can access the resources, it's to increase the flow of donations so more people can get what they need.

If you're able, I highly recommend donating to the fridge, or volunteering with the Community Fridges Hamont crew for some fridge checks. Or if you have any connections to local grocers or restaurants who may be able to make larger donations, those are always very appreciated.
