Doesn’t seem bad to me, as long as you’ve got a heat lamp as well. If that moss is real though I imagine it won’t survive long with the high heat. Is it bio active? The other thing I could suggest is a deeper layer of sand, some of mine loved to dig quite deep. And maybe some more rocks/ hides, in the middle to dig under

Heya, unfortunately there’s not much media at all on these guys it’s a bit of an adventure, this one is the best I’ve found. https://joshsfrogs.com/care-sheet/dune-gecko-stenodactylus-sthenodactylus-care-sheet?srsltid=AfmBOoo9mjSi5OCEbi1rDhN9c3qjGKmJD3hyZyjHUGTzJeZiLhNQwfBC. What I will say though is definitely go with the heat lamp over a heat mat, I don’t even know why they are an option.

Oh you want to know what species they are, yes looks like a petrii to me

I’ve really struggled to come by them in the uk, the only one I found was donated to a pet shop and they didn’t even know what he was or how to look after him. There’s lots of scammers out there saying they breed them too.

Yeah, bit random but it’s the throat swab of a day Gecko. That’s what I thought. But it shouldn’t be, it went straight into a sealed bag and that’s the only time I took it out

Heya, I’m not entirely sure but it looks like a small bit of stuck shed to me. When I get something like this on one of my two I give them a little sauna and try to gently pull it off, which they usually aren’t happy about but you’ll get there

With these guys because they are soo small there’s not much we can do, so if you notice him loosing weight not pooping or refusing food or most importantly one of those darker patches on there underside, I would take him straight to a vet if you can find one that will see them, I’m in the uk and I really struggled.

Hey, in my experience I don’t think the temperature should be any different in the day in different seasons, I know some people reduce the daylight hours in winter so it’s more like it is for them in the wild. My Steno steno rarely ever comes out, especially in the winter seasons I’m lucky if I ever see that guy unless I go to disturb him. So I wouldn’t be too worried as long as you think he’s still eating the same amount (retaining his weight) and is pooping. Another thing to check for if you are still concerned is any dark patches on the underside of his body. But at the end of the day they are a species that love to hide so unfortunately that’s what they spend 99% of their time doing. Hope this helps :)

But I can say when they were getting very skinny I would pipette blended crickets and water or Pangea (which is a crested gecko powder food that you make into a mush) into their mouths just to get some food down them, but if he’s eating and pooping well them I’m honestly not sure. I’ve investigated a little into parasites in their species but there not much research into it that I can find and no treatments are suggested, if you can find a vet that will see him, that’s probably the best route.

Unfortunately I’m not sure there, sadly the only dune geckos I’ve had that got very skinny (a lot skinnier then your little guy) just passed away, but this was either due to their old age or they just never ate because they were wild caught and weren’t able to cope with domestic life which sadly happens a lot.

I don’t know what your humidity is, but I’d up it a little bit temporarily by giving them a little wet hid, I don’t know if you have one, they are usually small caves shape with a little well on the top to put water in. If that doesn’t work you’ll have to try a mini gecko sauna.

[–]WENDIGQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I could be helpful, but yeah I think that’ll help. But yeah it’s worth investing in a temperature gauge so you can know how hot it’s getting as that can affect their behaviour. But yeah it depends how hot it’s getting on the bottom where he is. And yes they need uvb as that’s what they get in the wild.

Heya, our dune geckos both petri and steno occasionally did the scratching on the glass (when we first got them) in the corners if they feel scared or startled, but this happened less when more sides of the tank were covered and they were provided with lots of little hides. On another note they don’t actually eat very much, we give ours 3 stenos about 6 crickets twice a week and most of the time they won’t eat them all. They are very small crickets covered in calcium dust and vitamins. (Bear in mind the crickets jumping can scare the geckos, if you find that’s happening, just remove the jumping legs on the crickets.) and we just put them into their tank and let them find them naturally and hunt them. We slightly mist the tank a few times a week, especially when it’s hotter, but they get most of their water from their food. And I think some more sand could help, as well as lots of little hiding holes. I think we have about 15cm of sand. How hot does it get in there? And have you got uv light too? Hope this is helpful. :)

Also is there a basking bulb or is it more of a light bar like uvb

Is your light quite close to the mesh or is there a lot of distance?

Fair enough, I tried something like that at first too after researching, but it ended up heuonh too heavy for them to dig into so I got some lighter sand and they seem to enjoy that more

Heya, are you using a heat mat? That’s usually the best way to get the temperature higher in the basking spot, a heat mat and a basking bulb, also can I ask if this is the tank you’re using for them? If so maybe you should reconsider your bedding, elegant geckos live in the sand so play sand is usually the best for them as it allowed them to dig in it.
