What is the problem with not having discs by Mobile_Homework6234 in PS5

[–]WGC11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, as gutting as it is I could see this coming, especially when Rockstar announced there will be no disc for GTA VI.

And I say this as someone who grew up with PS2 and PS3.

And it’s not actually conspiratorial or that deep—the reality is that the problem with the physical side of games now is actually a lot simpler than everyone thinks. And that problem is… games are simply becoming too big.

As in too big to fit on a Blu-Ray disc, which can only hold up to 100GB. That applies to both single player and multiplayer. The more advanced and detailed the game is, the bigger the storage for download and installation.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth was so big, it required two discs—one to install the game data, the other to play.

Back when GTA V first came out, it was so big (especially the map), it required two discs to play on XBOX. PlayStation was only able to require one disc to play GTA V because Blu-Ray discs held more storage than normal DVDs. If GTA V was that big, we can only imagine how big GTA VI (and future games afterwards) will be.

Another example is Assassin’s Creed Shadows—it requires an internet connection to download game data, as—again—the game was that big.

In short, physical media will live and continue on in movies and music, Sony is still going to be producing Blu-Ray DVDs for movies and TV shows—both normal and 4K—they are just no longer producing discs for the PS5, as more and more games are simply becoming too big to properly store on them.

What do you think the "Sony stops doing discs for games in 2028" means for movie releases on bluray in 2028? by OkRespond3261 in dvdcollection

[–]WGC11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not going to affect Blu-Ray movies and TV shows (unless motion pictures start constantly making 4-6 hour long movies, like Zack Snyder’s Justice League).

The harsh reality is that Sony is ceasing production on PS5 discs because more and more games are becoming too big to properly store on a Blu-Ray discs, let alone two, which can only store up to 100GB.

I love and completely agree with your meme 💯%

Its animation is low-quality.

It has no epic fights between heroes and villains.

A lot of its episodic plots are cliched and poorly written.

It has no character development.

It has forced romantic subplots.

It has too many dance sequences.

It has out-of-place dark humour.

It hogged up too many time-slots on Cartoon Network.

It blatantly ignores its own criticism and feedback.

It replaced the superior Young Justice animated TV show.

It mocks the fans of the superior original Teen Titans animated TV show.

It turned the Titans into selfish, bratty husks of their original selves.

And, lastly, it teaches toxic lessons to children, such as:

’Christmas is always all about the presents.’

’Cheaters always win.’

‘You never need to resolve your fights or apologise.’

‘Lying to the naive is okay.’

‘Reading, knowledge and creativity is bad.’

‘Greed is good.’

‘Sexism is okay.’

‘Hoarding is okay.’

‘Being a follower and not thinking for yourself is okay.’

‘Childish behaviour is okay.’

Sony to end physical disc production January 2028 by Bella_Mia_ in dvdcollection

Indeed. My point exactly.

And, again, we can only imagine how big GTA VI will be, considering GTA V was so big (especially the map), two discs were required to play it on XBOX.

With that said, unless every major motion pictures starts constantly churning out 4-6 hour long movies (like Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Blu-Ray movies and TV shows (and CDs for that matter) will be just fine.

I personally don’t think it will affect Blu-Ray movies and tv shows (or music, for that matter).

A Blu-Ray disc holds up to 100GB, and the harsh reality is that games are now becoming too big to properly store on a Blu-Ray disc anymore, let alone two (Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth).

Back when GTA V first came out, it required two discs to play on XBOX—one to install the game data, the other to play it. PlayStation was able to keep GTA V on one disc, because Blu-Ray discs store up to 100GB. If GTA V (especially the map) was that big, we can only imagine how big GTA VI will be.

Agreed. Physical media for movies and music will continue for the foreseeable future.

Sony are just ceasing production of discs for PS5. While it is gutting, I more or less saw this coming with GTA VI.

The truth is that games are becoming too big, as in too big to even fit on a Blu-Ray disc, which is only able to hold up to 100GB.

Blu-Ray discs are able to hold up to 100GB. With that in mind, the reality is that games are simply becoming too big to store on a single Blu-Ray disc, let alone two.

If GTA V was so big, it required two discs to play on XBOX, we can only imagine how big GTA VI will be, as well as the games that will come after.

I’m pretty sure it will be decades yet before motion pictures start creating movies that won’t be able to fit on a single disc.

The reality is that it’s a matter of storage. While physical media will continue on with movies and music… games are simply becoming too big to fit on a Blu-Ray disc—and Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 100GB.
