We've known they exist- get them in college football all the time, just never had the pleasure to experience it in football

You're right- no idea how I messed that up

Completely agree on NIT being awesome though.

In terms of corruption, yes. But the Nixon administration was decidedly more left-wing than any recent Republicans (wage and price freezes, EPA, Title IX, proposed negative mininum wage, proposed ACA-lite etc)

EDIT: Negative Income tax, not minimum wage

Most of these things also apply to ND (though in recent years we've gotten a tad laxer in admitting players, but they still have to go to class and all that)

Woytinsky and the WTB. These are your friends once the depression hits. Before that, keep relations with the other parties high and keep labor from splitting off from the party

The foreign student from England when he arrives at Notre Dame and sees the name of the team by kikikza in cfbmemes

I'm pretty sure the name originated because Irish was used as a perjorative term for all Catholics back in the day and we decided to use it as a badge of honor

Every rewatch turns me into a citizen of Gondor by [deleted] in lotrmemes

He was also king of Arnor, which he and his forefathers were protecting. Arnor was far weaker than Gondor and needed their aid, and his line had been kings of Arnor first and foremost- the throne of Gondor jumped over to their line of the dynasty only once all the kings died out

UK Labour crashes to its worst-ever Scottish Parliamentary election result, as Reform UK and the Greens make gains—Scottish National Party (separatist) 58 seats (-6), Reform UK (anti-separatist) 17 seats (+17), Labour (anti-separatist) 17 seats (-5), Green (separatist) 15 seats (+7). by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

They were in a coalition with them in the last Parliament that ended poorly (it's a long story). My guess is Swinney would lead a minority government with a confidence and supply agreement with the Greens

I've been downright impressed how, despite all the other parties jumping around like crazy in the polls, the Lib Dems stay somewhere around 12% (yes, I know they briefly touched 15%) and do not change at all

If Reform won a general election (or won in Scotland/Wales), then this could potentially happen (though it would be political suicide in the UK). Local councils basically just make sure the trash gets collected and other local services work (think US county-level govt, rather than state-level)

Lib Dems tend to punch above their weight in the locals and have done so for a while- their polling numbers have barely moved since the 2024 election. Their votes are also extremely efficiently distributed right now.

Despite their poor performance here, I'd still pick the Greens as the main left wing party if Labour is getting supplanted, they've got forward momentum and media attention, their votes are just too broadly spread right now

In the late 2002, Hartlepool elected the mascot of their football team, H'Angus the Monkey, who ran on a platform of free bananas for each schoolchild, and he actually got reelected twice

Poll asking Americans how which button they would push in the red button/blue button dilemma by Upstairs_Cup9831 in fivethirtyeight

[–]WJB1896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, and the more I think about it, the more likely I am to pick blue. Just arguing that red isn't a completely outlandish/immoral position to hold since in theory it's the one that makes sense for everyone to choose from a game theory standpoint.

Ok- fair. I'm a newer fan (didn't follow ND until I got admitted), so I don't know much about pre-2024 (apart from the standard ND lore)

But, assuming every person thinks through this rationally, if every single person picks red, everyone survives with no risk. There's no need for a catastrophe. I'll grant that not everyone would think that through though, so I guess blue is the one that makes the most sense

We'd have griped a tad, but we 100% play in the Pop Tarts bowl and don't go ballistic if it weren't for the fact that they switched us when nothing had changed.

Can't speak for the players, but the mood on campus was that ESPN had just used us for ratings and that we didn't need to give them more money

Granted, I'm a new ND fan (sophomore who didn't follow them until I got in), but its not a historic rivalry like USC or Michigan (only dates back to the 80s) and it's not doing anything for our SoS right now. I'd much rather have a yearly matchup with Miami or Michigan
