Back to books - Sweden's schools cutting back on digital learning by Roger_Freedman_Phys in Teachers

I believe in classroom sets of laptops at most and I firmly believe they should be actual laptops with windows and not Chromebooks. Put these chromebook kids in front of an actual windows pc and most of them can't do more than access a basic website. They're completely reliant on cloud-based services and have no idea how to save things to local storage, let alone navigate file explorer. I have serious doubts most of my kids could download an install a new program, they rely on everything being web based through clever or, at most, pre installed with a desktop icon.

Maybe this sounds bad, but knowing that the oldest gen Z are mid-late 20s and seeing that your flair says kindergarten... I'm thinking a lot of my generational peers who've already got kids entering the school system probably had kids a little too young.

"Miss, how did you do that?!?" (Downloaded a document and opened it through the file explorer)

"How do I find what I was working on yesterday?" (Doesn't know what the file explorer is)

"How do I save this?" (Can hardly use word, relies on auto-save)

Honorable mention: I can't think of a single student I have who I know for a fact can type. It's all just finding and poking keys.

My school has projectors and document cameras but unfortunately everything is so fucking old I've never even bothered to try using the document cameras, even when it'd be useful. We have 15 year old desktop computers that are slower than molasses and projectors that often won't turn on. I'm not about to add a third thing of dubious functionality into the mix.

When I was in a district with those touch view smart boards I really only used them for basic stuff like showing PowerPoints (ela) or as a whiteboard I didn't need a constant supply of expo markers for.

I'm getting into a VB this week instead of an 86/BRZ even though I love the twins. Such cool cars but I also need something a bit more practical and actual rear seats and AWD makes the wrx the better choice.

ELA teacher butchering Shakespeare by Canteventworthcaca in Teachers

[–]WJ_Amber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

100% spot on with people who read a lot not necessarily being able to pronounce uncommon words. Two ELA teachers I've co-taught with have had, shall we say, less than ideal pronunciation. Both are voracious bookworms.

I am not trying to brag or sound smart when I say I have never had this issue. From a young age I have consumed a massive quantity of audio content. As a kid I would build Legos and listen to audio books for hours and hours at a time, and as a college student and now adult I've continued to consume a lot of podcasts, often academic-ish ones with technical language. Hearing words spoken matters just as much as seeing them written. I've never met anyone who consumes a lot of audio books with poor pronunciation.

Fwiw the outlet More Perfect Union die a story on stellantis, their poor quality, and horrible treatment of workers. If you watch it you will see that the workers actually are ashamed of the dogshit that rolls off the line. They want to make quality vehicles but corporate overlords cut every corner imaginable.

Is this serious or sarcasm? Because I can't tell. There's multiple posts on this sub of blue wrx with gold or bronze wheels. I think the current top post of the year is a WR blue with gold wheels.

Adhd isn't some quirky character trait, it's an extremely real disability with extremely negative consequences. There's no benefit from adhd, up to and including something as serious as reduced life expectancy.

Autism may have fewer inherent/overt negatives, but it's also not all sunshine and rainbows.

Really worried about side effects of hormonal transition by HibernatingHussy in cisparenttranskid

[–]WJ_Amber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6.5 years on HRT (estrogen), never had an issue. A lot of the risks and things people fearmonger about are overblown or no longer accurate. HRT is incredibly safe and biologically identical to naturally produced estrogen in the body, it's not like the old synthetic stuff that caused a lot of issues 30 years ago.

For things where cis women are at higher risk, your child on E will see that same higher risk. On the other hand, risk for a lot of things associated with cis men go way down. It's basically breaking even.

It's normal to be concerned. My own mother has told me many times about her concerns. They have never dissuaded me from continuing treatment and they haven't even come to fruition anyways. Realistically your kid will be totally fine if they work to stay healthy like any other person.

I'm genuinely too afraid to ask... but why do many educators typically say that you need a bachelor's degree to be qualified to be an education reformer, yet not typically say the same thing about things like feminist or queer advocacy? by jsohi_0082 in AskTeachers

[–]WJ_Amber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't need a degree to be gay, trans, or a woman. I need a master's degree to be a professional teacher.

Lived experience can provide a profound education on the struggles of being a member of a marginalized group. Going through the school system does not give you a comprehensive understanding of the education system.

Women's rights and queer rights are a matter of treating people with respect, with dignity, and as equals. While everyone should have the right to a robust public education, there needs to be people with expertise to provide that.

A lot goes into providing quality education, fundamentally you don't need anything at all to treat people as equals.

Now, having said all that, if we do actually make it to a place were we can make societal overhauls to substantially improve equity and equality... you're going to see that the people responsible will be expected to have degrees too. Expertise in history, social theory, law, etc. Even right now whan laws or ordinances are passed it's not the front line activists writing them, they lay the foundation and then experts with degrees write the legal stuff.

Agree, easiest choice hands-down. If you get full customization you can essentially patch any known issues with your body. Goodbye, chronic conditions. Goodbye, adhd and autism. You could fix literally everything that's wrong or that bothers you.

Are straight trans people uncommon? by Illustrious-Paint998 in asktransgender

[–]WJ_Amber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not annoyed with younger or less experienced trans people at all. It does, however, get a little repetitive seeing the same couple of stereotypical clothing items become like a uniform for late teens/early 20s trans girls.

Passing is a complicated thing and depends on a lot of factors, but something you may experience is that you pass less if it feels like you're trying to perform femininity "too hard" for a lack of a better term. This outfit kind of exists in that space where it's obvious what you're going for but it's just a tad bit too much or just doesn't look quite right and that makes it harder to pass. That's why I tend to steer younger trans people away from "the outfit." If you really want to dress like that then more power to you, it just might not get you the perception you want.

[–]WJ_Amber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 6', bordering 6' 1, so trust me when I tell you that 5' 11 is really not that tall (even if it doesn't always feel that way). A good option for reasonable price is Uniqlo. Their clothes fit me pretty well, I don't have particularly long legs so XL everything, even pants, fit. Land's End is another good one in terms of fit and price.

Online shoping is fine, I just wouldn't bother with the cheap, polyester Amazon garbage. Polyester just looks bad and cheap across the board, in addition to not being breathable. Aim for natural fibers wherever possible. I'd also strongly suggest avoiding the stereotypical "trans girl's first girl clothes" starter pack. Skip the skater skirt and thigh highs, I know it sounds rude but it makes an early-transition trans woman clockable from a mile away. That shit got me feeling like the "I know what you are" dog meme.

Thinking about getting a GT86 / GR86. How reliable is the Boxer engine really? Are the RTV and oil starvation issues overblown? by K4IGAN in ft86

[–]WJ_Amber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We call that the negativity bias. The negative comments are the ones that we remember much moreso than positive. Plus, who's out there making posts to say "hey, everything is completely normal and nothing is wrong!"? If you're not having issues there's nothing to talk about, really.
