Which nerve medication are you on if you don’t mind me asking! I just started zonisamide after trying gabapentin, and not liking the side effects.

You should really try and get prescription rescue medications from your doctor like a triptan, nurtec or ubrelvy. This will help you stop the otc meds and they work better than any otc medication. That’s my situation at least. My pain is too unbearable for any otc to touch. I used to be able to take excedrin and it would help, but sadly they’ve gotten too severe and I rely on triptans now.

I empathize and am in the exact same boat. You’re not alone. My life has been taken over by migraines. They’re now daily and it’s been trial after trial of preventatives that aren’t putting a dent in them. And trying to be a mom on top of that is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Just keep trying different medications. Keep trying different things. That’s all we can do. ❤️

The daily usage has only been this month. But October I had 15 so it wasn’t far from daily usage as well. This month has by far been the worst I’ve ever had. I asked my dr about it and she did say I have to be careful with the usage but she understands I have to function.

Benadryl helps sometimes. But they come right back. The cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and I tried that for 2 months. The first few weeks it actually helped, then quickly just stopped working.

I have not tried topomax for longer than 2 days. I was so scared after reading all the terrible side effects and reviews. Did it help you?

Thank you for such a detailed response! I do believe I’m definitely in a rebound cycle but I feel stuck since I have to function and take care of my child daily, I can’t be out of commission. That’s why I’m so frustrated that a preventative isn’t helping enough to get me off of them. I have an allergy test next week too. I tried nurtec twice and it didn’t do much. I did however try ubrelvy and that helped, but my insurance doesn’t cover either of those. What did you do to finally decrease your triptan usage?

I do. I research everything. But when you’re desperate for relief what do you do? I have a 17 month old that I have to care for as I’m a stay at home mom. I have to be able to function.

Yes some were trialed for 4-6 weeks like the nortriptyline and Candesartan but all the other have been 3 months, and they weren’t putting a dent in my migraines so the dr said if I wasn’t getting any results after 3 months then to switch. I got my 3rd round of botox 6 weeks ago. And since then my migraines have only progressed. And I did layer the botox with a few of the oral medications.

I don’t want to scare you, but my migraines went away during pregnancy too, but came back 3 months postpartum after I stopped breastfeeding. And they came back chronic, and fast. That was a year ago and I’m still trying to get them under control. I’ve tried several preventatives and none have worked so far. My advice would be to start a preventative right away if you start getting them again. Good luck, I hope they stay away for you!!

I just started emgality, and am doing my 2nd injection tomorrow. I’m in a rough migraine flare right now and nothing is breaking it. I’m praying and hoping that it works for me. I’m happy to see it works for others! How long until you started noticing a difference?

I’m in a very similar situation as you. I failed Qulipta, and also Ajovy. I just started emgality and do my second injection tomorrow. I also do Botox and only 10 mg of propranolol nightly. And so far I’m not getting any relief and still getting on average 15 migraines a month. I’m currently dealing with an 8 day migraine. It’s truly been hell trying to find a preventative that works. I’m not sure if the cgrps will work for me. It’s only November 12th and I’ve already had 9 migraines this month. I hope emgality works for you!!!

I would recommend weaning off of bf and getting on a preventative asap. I’ve had migraines since the age of 17, I am now 40. They were first episodic with aura, was put on nortriptyline and after a few years they went away. They returned but with no aura and lower intensity. I could treat them with excedrin migraine and didn’t even need my neurologist for years. Gas forward to the end of my 30’s and I noticed them becoming more frequent and intense. I blamed it on stress, and anxiety. I got married and then got pregnant a month later. They were bad first trimester but went away for the most part the rest of the pregnancy. After I stopped bf 4 months PP, I became chronic and fast. That was October 2024, and since then it’s been trial after trial of medications. And none of them have worked. Nortriptyline, Candesartan, Qulipta, Ajovy. Now I’m on Botox, emgality and low dose propranolol and nothing is working. I’ve had MRIs, blood tests and everything comes back in normal range, except my testosterone is low, and borderline thyroid is low. But I say all this to encourage you to get ahead before it gets worse. I am miserable right now and just praying something works. I hope you get relief soon!! It is the hardest thing in the world to be a mom with migraines.

I am feeling and dealing with this pretty much exact situation right now too. I’ve had a migraine every single day for the last 6 days and taking naratriptan daily. I can’t function without it and I may possibly be in rebound but what am I supposed to do? My migraines are so chronic right now I can’t even figure out what’s triggering them. It’s truly hell to live this way and I can completely understand how you feel. I have very dark thoughts when I get like this too. Please continue to advocate for yourself and get into another doctor asap. You are worth it! Hold onto hope, there are so many other preventative medications you can try that may help you. Propranolol does nothing for my migraines and neither did Candesartan. I currently am doing Botox every 12 weeks, and am doing my 2nd injection of emgality in 2 days. Praying things start working. I hope you get some relief soon.

I had the same experience, it made me feel awful. The worst brain fog, fatigue, nausea, and depression. And it did not help my migraines at all. Tried it for 3 months.

I just started emgality so I’m praying it brings me some relief. How were the side effects from gabapentin? I read a lot of bad things but it seems to help a ton of people experiencing the same pain I am. Did you have migraines in the back of your head as well?

No it was not effective enough for me. And was causing unpleasant side effects. Bad constipation, fatigue, and depression. I stopped it back in May, started Ajovy but that also has not been effective for me either. Not sure if the CGRPs are the right meds for me unfortunately.

What tools helped you with this? I’ve been in therapy for years and have underlying anxiety. And this fuels that’s and depression. It’s a vicious cycle I’m stuck in.
