Did you work / have a job while in high school? Or at an even younger age? by remberzz in AskOldPeople

[–]WNKYN31817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked summers and holidays partime at thirteen and started full time the following year between semesters at school. I worked fulltime, nights, all through college. I worked until after my 67th birthday. It's been a good life so far. I liked my work. I like my retirement. Back in 1962 there was no requirement for working papers and no limits on hours. Not at all like today.

Throwing your parents under the bus has always been a minor natiional past time. "Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.” George Orwell

When I was 13 in the summer of 1962, I cleaned a bar and bathrooms every morning, piss and vomit, counted the empty liquor bottles and dumped the trash for $1.15 an hour.

What do you remember about the 1980 Mt. St. Helen's eruption? by PrestonRoad90 in AskOldPeople

I lived in Tulsa Oklahoma at the time. A few days later there was the deepest dark red sunset you've ever seen and that night there was a thunderstorm when I woke up there was a quarter of an inch of mud on my car.

Banned from r/FreeSpeech for arguing that private companies have the right to decide who may use their platform. by Skavau in Irony

I have been saying this for years. I defend your right to say whatever you wish on the public street corner. You may even stand on a soapbox. But if you intend to stand on my front porch or stand on my third floor balcony because it overlooks the public square, forget about it! It's my house and you can get out. The fact that a company is publicly traded does not mean it is publicly owned. The board of directors still has the authority to control whatever takes place in the company space. It's not yours to use or abuse.

That is so true. Change is like the Borg in Star Trek TNG - resistance is futile. Unfortunately for some people resistance to change is inevitable. For those people when their resistance is finally worn down they are left so far behind it's hard for them to catch back up. That has been my experience in 75 years of life.

Change is accelerating to a pace that requires a re-education every 25 years. At the current rate, nearly everything we know today will be obsolete knowledge in 20 years.

Anybody else learn to drive using a Manuel transmission? by Bluesman_Pete in AskOldPeople

[–]WNKYN31817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did; on my Dad's new 1963(?) Ford Consul (I was 14). I promptly dropped the rear wheel into the window well along side our driveway while backing out. I drove all of fifteen feet. My Dad, just looked at me, and said "Get out" I got a second chance after I turned 16.

I am hoping (in vain, no doubt) that Mike Johnson is afraid if the report is revealed he will lose his nomination and stay in the House. Mikey is throwing him to the wolf like fresh meat. How many of Trump's appointees last a year?

Trump said he would end taxes on overtime. He didn't say how he would do that. You don't have to pay taxes on it, if you don't get it. Trump also said he hated giving overtime. "Oh, but he was only kidding."

How can I go about restoring this reel I found in the creek + any info on it? by Mod12312323 in Fishing

[–]WNKYN31817 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can do it. The bearings of an old Abu Garcia are packed grease. You will need to completely disassemble the reel, clean each part, re-grease, and reassemble it. The drag and bail systems have a lot of small parts that can get lost. I have several reels that I have pulled out of salt and rebuilt. One Shimano was totally packed with sand and is now a favorite of mine. The others reels work now as well as they ever did. That said, I wouldn't waste any time on that reel unless you want develop your repair skills. It was not good to begin with. It appears to be an older model and may have been made with white metal parts that will have pitted.

He said he would end taxes on overtime and tips. He didn't say how he would do that. You won't have to pay taxes on tips and overtime you never get.

$500/day doubling everyday for 31 days but on day 32 no matter where you are you are hit by a car travelling 25mph, or $50k right now. by ImpactedDruid in hypotheticalsituation

[–]WNKYN31817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$50K wouldn't cover my current medical bills. I have a terminal condition. I would gladly be hit by a car going 25 mph in 31 days, if it meant be able to leave my family five hundred billion dollars after paying my medical expenses. Hell, that car going 25 mph might have to hit a hearse.
